will the smell of dog urine hurt my baby?
we are going to go visit our grandmother however her dog has urinated all over the carpets in her house.. she can npt smell this, the carpets are gonna be cleaned, but not for a month... will this affect my infant?
I doubt the aroma will be harmful just very annoying. Dont put her on the floor tho... well at least I wouldnt.
The chemicals in the carpet cleaner are probably more toxic actually.
When I had my son, my sense of smell seemed to sharpen. Smells that never bothered me before started bothering me a lot. I don't think the smell will bother your baby, but YOU might not be able to take it.
Is there a way you could visit them, but stay outside on a patio or in the backyard? The outdoors would be better for an infant. If you have to be indoors, I don't think the smell will be harmful--especially if it's only for a short time. Try to avoid staying overnight at their house, if you can.

but can you postpone your trip until after the carpets are cleaned?
That would be more comfortable for everyone, I think.
My grandfather had dogs and although I didn't care for them, I don't care for dogs in general, they weren't misbehaved or pee in the house but I could smell their fur. I was really sensitive to it.
I took my baby to visit my grandfather because at his age, it was a miracle he got to see my baby at all. He passed away at 85 when she was not yet 2. He loved our visits and my daughter adored him. We got lots of pictures.
The dog smell never bothered her and ironically....she loves dogs. Loves them!
She didn't get that from me, but grandpa's dogs never bothered her in any way.
My mother in law passed away 3 weeks to the day after my son was born. Massive heart attack out of the blue. She never got to see my baby.
For these reasons, I wonder if you need to put off your visit. There may not be a month. We never know.
North Carolina is beautiful this time of year. Perhaps you can visit on the porch or something so you're not in the house the whole time.

Yikes, I am a big dog lover, but this is not a smell I could be around for any length of time. I'm sure it will not harm the baby but it has to be pretty unsanitary. I would wait, a 1 wk old baby is pretty young to be traveling anyway. You could alsostay at a hotel since you" might be up all hrs caring for the baby" and Gma needs her rest :D
The urine smell probably isn't harmful (unless ventilation is poor and it's deteriorated into ammonia fumes). A carpet cleaning solution could be even more toxic.
it depends if it is acidic or not. Cat urine is worse but dog urine is bad if it is not cleaned first. Just make sure carpets are cleaned before you go, they can do a pet urine treatment where they get most of it out. The smell should be gone if they do that. You do have to pay extra and request it before they clean it. Just be sure to not put your baby OR baby items on the floor....wear shoes too! ugh
Just a response about toxic carpet cleaning chemicals... We treat urine spots with enzymes. Then when we clean the carpets, we do the steam cleaning - no chemicals. We have a bird, and they are very sensitive to chemicals... like the canary in the coal mine, so are extra careful.
I believe it will be ok for you to take your daughter to see your grandmother. She won't be on the floor at all, but the smell will be uncomfortable. But the carpet cleaning will hurt your daughter because of the chemicals like others have mentioned because they might have to go over it several times to really get the smell out, all the way down to the pad. Is there a way for grandma to come and visit you? Well good luck to you and your family for whatever you decide?
