My son just turned 1 last week, he also got shots and is cutting 2 teeth and we took him off formula and put him on whole milk all at the same time. He took real well to the milk but now he all of the sudden has stopped eating nor will he drink a whole lot. Therefor he has stopped having as many wet diapers as he use the have. I know that there are certain side effects to teething and shots but he has never stopped eating or drinking. He got the chicken pok shots and MMR shots. He also has a conjested cough, runny nose, and watery eyes, he has tubes in his ears for about 7 weeks now and has already had 1 ear infection and i am really tired of him being on meds. if anyone has any suggestions or if you have been through the same thing please let me know.

What can I do next?

Hey, A.! You have my middle name (named after my dad-Andrew) and my daughter's first name! Sounds like maybe your son could be alergic to milk. Try giving him other liquids for a couple days and see if you notice an improvement in the congestion. Hang in there! It gets easier when they can communicate and tell you whats bothering them. Right now, at his age, it's pretty much a guessing game.

Hi A.,

You may want to switch your son to goat's milk for a while. It's much easier for the body to digest and doesn't cause as much trouble in the intestinal tract. Children are less likely to be allergic to it as well and it tastes about the same.

The ear infections might be helped by that as well.

If you'd like to boost your baby boy's immune system, try Sambucol Immune System Enhancer! It works wonders for boosting the immune system and actually helps fight off viruses! You can find this at most health food stores. It's all natural so you don't have to worry about over-medicating like you do with antibiotics.

Also available at health food stores is a product called Wally's Ear Oil. Ask your doctor before using it but is a natural product that helps sooth and heal ear infections.

I haven't found an ear infection yet that Wally's Ear Oil can't handle!! Works for my kids, my husband and me as well.

Good luck. I hope your son feels better soon.

M. :)

Just be patient! It isn't easy I know! I have 3 children and another on the way and I know it is frustrating! Question, does your little guy have a fever - if yes, are keeping him on Tylenol (or any fever reducers)? I have found (over the last year and a half or so) that my little ones always get over their illnesses MUCH quicker if I hold off on meds until they REALY need them. It can be scary to let them have a fever but it is the bodies natural way of fighting the infection! If they hit about 102.5 or so (depending on their demeanor) is when I give them fever reducer.
Also, I have a little one with tubes and had them myself. The congestion and stuff could be due to allergies with the cow's milk - I had this same thing - or from seasonal allergies, etc. Maybe switch him back to formula for a week or so and see if that helps! Maybe start the change back to cow's milk gradually by adding an ounce of cow's milk to his regular formula over a several days and then up it to 2 ounces after a few days, etc. If he doesn't want to eat or drink anything then just make sure he takes popsicles if he likes them, jello or whatever he will eat! It is okay to let him decide what he wants. His body will tell him what to eat - in moderation of course!! As long as he has some wet diapers and his eyes don't sink in you are ok. Let me know if you need more suggestions! I would love to help

hi A.! my first question is... did you take time to introduce whole milk to him before u switched him completely? it could be that it was something new and different so of course he enjoyed it, but now hes ready for his formula, so therefore isnt drinking anything in protest. my son who is now 19 months old has a milk protein defeciency which means that he breaks out with milk products, not just milk. at first, we would give him a teaspoon to a tablespoon here and there and that amount was ok but when we switched him over, he broke out. maybe ur son isnt having visible reactions to the milk but it could be upsetting his stomach. i suggest soy formula or soy milk and even goats milk. it is much easier on the stomach.

as far as reactions to teething... we have asked our pediatrician about teething and she has said that running a fever is not a symptom. u get a fever from an infection of some sort, ie... ear infections, flu, cold, etc. those symptoms that u did describe could be from his shots. those are classic signs of his body reacting to them.

my only suggestion would be a vaporizer, they have the safe ones now for children that dont require any medicine in the vapors to help clear up the congestion and runny nose. also, having him play in the bathroom with a hot shower or bath running could help break the congestion as well. i hope ive helped some and i wish u all my best!

I also think it may be an allergy. My son stayed sick until we took him off dairy completely. Over 8 ear infections in a row. We chose to use some soy products instead. He is also very allergic to pollens and this is high pollen season everywhere.

But our son made the most improvement after we had hi tonsils and adnoids removed. His adnoids were so large that they were causing improper drainage that led to infection.

HI A.!!
I am a mom of two girls ages 1 1/2 and 9 !! I will admit my first one was a huge adjustment!! She stayed at the doctors office ALL the time!! She had an ear infection EVERY month for her first year! They did not put tubes in her ears unitl she was 4! They did this once I began to see a ENT! He told me that she had terrible allergies, but when she was tested she did not test positive to ANY comman ones. So we did the tonsils and things BUT she continued to have ear infections and things. WELL I finally decided that it had to do with the carpet in the apartment I was in. My husband and I built a house with no carpet and a few months after we moved in I
made a dramatic change in a few things. I converted my home to products that did not contain harsh chemicals like bleach and phosphates!!! And guess what ~~ no more tubes, allergy medicine, and no watery eyes or sneezing!! BEST OF ALL - she has not been to the doctor in over a year~~~!!! Well I feel 100% that alot of ear infections and things are directly related to the products used in your home. There have been numerous studies to prove this. Please let me know if you would like to know how I converted my home and what I use!!!
I am a true believer because it has made a difference in my child!!
Thanks

Have you taken him to the ENT?

He may have another ear infection. Mine refuse to eat when they get an ear infection.

It could also be an allergy, if his formulae was a milk based formulae then it would not be an allergy to the whole milk. More likley due to pollen if you live here in the South.

I know I am going to come off sounding like a hippy here but here goes, my first thought is the milk. A milk allergy is actually pretty common. I would try rice milk or soy milk for a week or two and see if he gets better.
