My husband and I are taking two nights away, without our kids for the first time in five years. So, where can we go and have some luxury and some things to do and see that is not too far (4 hrs. max in the car from Detroit area)? Chicago? Up North Michigan? any suggestions for nice hotels with spas?

What can I do next?

The inn at bay city. You really never have to leave the hotel. Downtown is small but quaint.

Saugutuck is wonderful. Great Bed and Breakfasts, lovely downtown, hang out on the beach of Lake Michigan, art galleries, live music at several restaurants in evening, fishing (if that is your thing), etc. Only a 3 hour drive from Detroit.

There is a really nice B&B in Oscoda, MI right on the water. It's called Huron House, we stayed here before we had kids and it's lovely!!! http://www.huronhouse.com/
Of course a train ride to Chicago would be awesome to!!! We are finally going without our kids next June to California for our 15 year and I'm already nervous about leaving them!! But we're going to Skype!!! :)
Good Luck and Happy Anniversary!!

I gave my wife a cruise for our 10th anniversary. We had 5 kids we left with my MIL. We had a wonderful time and so did she (MIL). (I'm not bragging, just giving you more ideas.)

There are several travel sites that can help you plan a trip. CheapCaribbean.com is a great site and do other things besides caribbean.
VacationsToGo.com, 800-680-2858 (US and Canada) has all kinds of specials. http://www.vacationoutlet.com/promotion/vo/hotels/hotel-s...
has lots of hotel and resort specials. ShermansTravel.com has discount listings for all over the world.

I hope you have a wonderful time. Happy Anniversary!!!

If you have something of an adventurous spirit, you could sign up for one of the discount programs - Priceline, Hotwire, Vacations to Go, etc. Put in the dates, and see what pops up as a deal! They won't tell you a particular hotel, but it sounds like you don't care. It will give you the number of stars and you can check off the amenities you want. It will give you the city and then some of the attractions in the area - then you click to buy, and THEN you get the name of the hotel. A lot of us have done this for business travel as well as pleasure. The hotels try to sell off their vacant rooms at a discount, and you will have more money to enjoy luxurious dinners and spa treatments if you spend less on the room - make the most of it!

If you like the outdoors and adventure, Boyne Mtn is a great place to go. If you like wine, stay at Black Star Farms in Traverse City. http://www.blackstarfarms.com/inn/ It's a vineyard in itself and close enough to other vineyards that you can do a wine tour. Both places are very romantic!

Lexington, MI is beautiful; my family and I were there last Saturday to see the fireworks and it was such a beautiful and quaint little town, or go up to Mackinaw City; I can't remember what hotel my parents and I stayed at, but it was clean, beautiful and the town was beautiful; there's a restaurant (the crow's nest i think) has some good food, especially breakfasts and the island is awesome! Happy Anniversary!

Maybe Toronto? Beautiful city, great shopping, great food and can be relatively inexpensive if you shop around. Take a look at www.tripadvisor.com for hotel and restaurant reviews.
