I have no idea why, but my son just started to wake up at 3am and it's killing me, it feels like i'm not getting any sleep at all. Before i put him down at night i give him a bath and a bottle and he gets a snack before he goes down, and now he's just getting up and crying, and if i leave him, and he falls back to bed again he is up at five, and i'm not a moring person at all. i'm lucky if i get up on time to get my daughter ready fro school some morings. he's never had this problem before, he always slept from 7-7 and now this waking up is just getting us all out of wack, if anyone as any advice on what i could be doing differently i will appericate it very much. Thank you

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the great advice, my son started going to bed like an hour later and that seemed to help, and i also found out that my daughter was waking around 2am and shouting in her room, so i think that had part to do with him waking up as well, so i had a talk with my daughter and she is no longer being so loud if she wakes up now, and also if she does get up and can't fall back to sleep she comes to get me. ANd also he is cutting some teeth. So thank you all for the wonderful advice i really appericated!!!

We always had sleep disruptions when mine were learning a new skill such as crawling, walking, language burst, etc. It was like they just didn't have time to sleep since they were so focused on the new skill. They would be super grumpy, but refused to sleep. Once the new skill was mastered, they quickly returned to a normal pattern and everyone was happier. Of course, they work on so many new skills during that 6-18 month period that it was never long before another disruption occured.

One other thought, did his wakings correspond to the time change? Maybe that has thrown him off a bit. Either way it's only a phase and should pass soon. As a mom of a son that didn't sleep through the night until 14 or so months I know it's hard! Even after that he'd sometimes be up for the day at 5:30, ugh. The good news, since he made it through that phase he has been an excellent sleeper (knock on wood!). Good luck!

You may need to keep him awake in the evening alittle bit later. 7 pm is early. If you are an evening person and want to sleep in that may help. Also I would anticipate his awaking. Sometime there are noises that we don't hear that have changed that he might be getting woken up by. We are a foster family of newborns. One time we had a baby that kept waking up at 4 am. I couldn't figure out why til I was awake before him. We had a caravan of heavy trucks traveling down our road every morning at 4am on the dot!!! They were going to work via our road. It shook our house and of course made some noise. This is something I never noticed til was awake for the experience. So checkit out something may have changed in the enviornment.

is he teething? my 16 month old has been very slow to get her teeth, and I think she has a lot moving in right now... so we've been having a lot of waking up issues. i've been giving her some teething tablets, teething gel and I always keep a bottle of water in her crib in case she's thirsty. maybe this would help?

Maybe try puttin him to bed a little later. His hours are probably changing. They usually do just when you get used to them. :-)

Hi S.,
He might be cutting his molars. My son didn't sleep through the night for about 2 months when his first set of molars came in. They take forever to come through and your child doesn't get any relief until they actually split through the gums.

Don't worry - this too shall pass...it might just take a while. We actually gave my son those frozen teething toys to suck on when he was cutting his molars - they seemed to help.

Hi there-
I totally feel your pain. My son didn't sleep thorugh the night until he was 13 months old!! He still gets up every now and then.

This is what helped me...
1. Make sure his nighttime routine is really strict
2. If you can stand it, try to push his bed time back by 30-60 minutes. It may stink for you, but it may get him tired enough to crash for the whole night.
3. Has your son gotten his molars yet? They may be starting to pop through. My son got his VERY early.
4. The worst case scenario...he's just being 13 months and trying to get a little extra love...even if it is at 3 in the morning.

I hope some of this helped. Good Luck!!

A little about me...I am the mother of a 2 year old little boy named Samuel and am expecting twins in the spring. I totally understand what it's like not to sleep. I don't think I'll ever sleep again!!!
