My son is 15 months old and still does not fall asleep on his own at night. We usually have to snuggle until he falls asleep, then lay him in his crib. (He does have a nebulizer treatment every night, but has since his was born...29 weeker with undeveloped lungs....so we usually have a bath, nebulizer, bottle, book, then snuggle) However, his teacher at daycare told me today, that all she does is put him in his crib at nap time and he lays down and falls asleep on his own in about 5-10 minutes. I would like to be able to get him to do the same at home with my husband and I. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated! Thanks

What can I do next?

... the Nebulizer.... at night.... may very well be hindering his sleep.
I have Asthma... and nebulizers usually use Albuertol in it.... and Albuterol... can make one.... restless/hyper etc, and thus, going to sleep is hard.
For my Mom, who also takes a nebulizer... it affects her sleep... or falling asleep as well.
For me though, it does not.
Each person is different.
I would.. speak to the Doctor... and see if dosage or timing/time of day... for the treatments... can be adjusted....

But during the day, when he is NOT on his nebulizer... of course, he can sleep. And he is also probably very sleepy, during the daytime... because at night... his sleep is affected by the medication....

DO NOT cry it out.
He is so young and has health issues... LUNG issues. Crying it out... will NOT help that.

Don't worry, both my kids at that age as well... still had trouble falling asleep on their own. No Biggie. I did not see it as a big deal.
Usually... from about 2 years old.... a child will then mature.... enough... naturally, to have a better ability about it....

You have to... consider his condition/health/medication.... in such a young child and it interfering with his sleep... ability. He is not doing it on purpose...

all the best,
Susan

Leaving him to cry will teach him nothing about sleep. How on earth would a 15 month old make the connection that "oh, I've been left in my bed guess I should go to sleep now" when all he knows is comfort and security of mom and dad cuddling with him till he's asleep. That is his reality. What he knows and depends on as a routine. I held both of my kids until they were out for the longest time (well over a year) and we were able to gradually make the shift to them going to sleep on their own. No having to go take a shower so I couldn't hear them cry. That actually makes my heart sink to think of doing that to one of my kiddos.

I would snuggle with him and then start trying to put him down when he is really drowsy. If he will let you lay him down just stand by the crib with your hand on him and your head down on the side of the crib. That way you are there and he actually falls asleep in his bed. This is how I started the transition from hold till they are asleep to sleeping on their own.

But honestly what is really wrong with snuggling with them till they are out? Those are some of my sweetest memories and I love it when my almost 30 month old wants me to hold her till she's asleep some nights. Doesn't spoil her or ruin her sleep habits. It's giving her comfort and security when she needs it.

He just has you trained. Untrain him by changing what YOU do and everything will fall into place. Start to wean from bottle and change routine around before bed to replace that bottle. Let him jump, crawl and massage him so he can get some nice sleepy chemicals to his brain. Good luck.

Put him in bed and leave him - it won't take him long to fall asleep. You are going to have to listen to him cry the first few times though....but it won't take long until he knows that it is time for bed and just lays down to sleep. I suggest the first couple of nights you go in after you lay him down and take a nice long shower so you can't hear him crying.....
