16 Month Old Poop Has Completely Identifiable Food in It? Help?

We have an appointment on the 29th to ask about testing for a few things, food allergy wise.

But, lately I have been offering her some Quinoa in place of rice at dinner time seeing it is more protein packed and nutritious than rice.
When she poops the next day it is in perfect form in her poop, like, you can see each little bead of Quinoa unchanged.

Scared me pretty good for a minute haha, what could this be from though? I want to make sure I mention everything possible to our doctor so we don't miss any tests she might need since the appointments can be a little far apart at times.

It is perfectly okay. My son had undigested corn in his and I was beside myself with worry. When I called the nurse at my ped's office, she told me it was like "roughage" and I didn't need to worry about it. I asked if I should stop giving him corn, and she assured me that it was fine.

Babies don't digest foods as well as adults. So she isn't digesting her Quinoa and it's going through her colon. Just like roughage. I'm sure your ped will tell you the same thing when you go to your appointment.

If you see some of the quinoa in her BMs it's fine. It is insoluble fiber, so just passes through her system (doesn't get digested). The fiber in it actually pushes the BM through so it's not a reason for concern.

Sometimes kids (and adults) eat too quickly or too much and then you can see whole foods come through (or if they don't chew enough).

I'd make sure you are cooking it to the directions precisely to make sure it breaks down for her ok. But shouldn't be cause for alarm. If she was having problems breaking down foods, you would see other foods coming through undigested too - not just the quinoa.

High fiber foods do this a lot. Babies and toddlers don't have super digestive systems anyway, but some foods like starches and starchy veggies (e.g. corn) do this even in adults. And since the fiber-rich foods increase the pooping and the cleaning out of the intestines, you'll see more of it.

You might try giving less quinoa (or rice or corn or anything else) at one sitting, and including more binding foods (e.g. cheese, bananas) at the same meal. If you give quinoa, raw carrots. raisins and apples at one meal, you'll see more of it in the poop. On the flip side, if you give BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) at one meal, you're not going to see any poop at all for a day or so!

But if you are testing for food allergies, you've probably got some other symptoms you haven't mentioned here.

Have you heard the phrase regarding toddler poop: Raisin in, Raisin out...

They're digestsive systems are still immature and won't break down a lot of high fiber foods for awhile yet.

Have you noticed how bananas turn the poop black? That's banana seeds.

Corn, peas will fall into this category for awhile.

I could not feed my first daughter whole wheat breads until she was about 2, WW flours went right through her.

GL! It's totally normal. Perhaps stick to rice if you see Quinoa going through too fast.

I usually know what my granddaughter had for dinner when I change her the next day. Perfectly normal. Are you taking her to doctor for this?
