My daughter is going to be 17 months old .She had a bad Flu after she got the flu shot and was in a terrible state with 103 degree fever/cold and cough etc for the last 7 days. She still has stuffiness in her nose but other than that she is doing ok(Thank God)now. But sadly she gave up her milk completely! At first i thought she was not drinking milk from her bottle bcuz of the congestion etc but even after she has started feeling better she doesnt like to drink milk anymore.I hate to see her cry when i forcefully try and throw a few ounces down her throat by her cup. Also not to forget, she is teething with practically all her teeth erupting at the same time...and that is not helping either i guess.Has anyone expereienced this with their child?Do they get to drinking milk again?Any suggestions/help/advice is greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

My son also gave up milk around that age (about 15 months) and he never went back (he's now 3 yrs old). Cow's milk is not necessary to a toddler's diet and can aggravate mucus prodution in some people. So it's probably good that your daughter stopped drinking it during her cold. Be sure to offer calcium and vit D from other sources. Don't sweat it and don't feel you need to force it down her...

I wouldn't try to force it. Just maybe little by little. Your daughter will be okay. It was better for her when she was sick to have clear liquids. I think she will drink her milk more. Best of luck.

Hi, many toddlers give up milk at this stage. It may or may not have anything to do with her being sick! I have been a child care provider for 10 years. I have seen a lot of children give up milk in the toddler stage. My son gave up milk at 14 months. I gave him cereal with milk(kix, cheerios, kashi, etc..), yogurt, cheese, orange juice, and soy milk. he began to drink milk again at 18 months. Now I can't seem to keep enough milk in the house for him:) She will definitely go back to drinking milk, but in the mean time keep presenting it to her as well as other things loaded with calcium.

Good Luck

P.,
Many people, including doctors, do not think that cow's milk is good for children. If you still want to give her dairy products, I would try some goat milk products, like yogurt. The goat milk's curd is samller--easier than cow's milk to digest.

Hi. you did say that she just got over the flu. Her little tummy may still be a little bit tender. Drink fluids like water or pedialite. It will curb the dehydration factor and if you use pedialite, it will also help the loss of some electrolites that were lost. Keep her hydrated. Give her water, gatoraide, pedialite....etc.

She may like it again, who knows with toddlers! In the mean time give her cheese, yogurt and O.J. with calcium. My daughter stopped drinking milk at 2 years old. We make up for it with other foods! Have you tried putting some chocolate Ovaltine in her milk. She may like the taste of the Ovaltine.
