17 Month Old Has Recurring Vomiting

My 17 month old son had what I thought was a stomach virus over 2 weeks ago, he vomited four times in 1 day, and had weird poop for a few days after that (I'm guessing it was because he didn't eat much). This was the first time he had ever vomited, he has been a pretty healthy kid up to this point, with a few little colds, no other problems. A few days after that, it happened again, he vomited a few times, and then was better. My husband and I then got the flu (no vomiting for us, and he never got it), and then we went on vacation for 5 days (left a week after the last vomit day), and had no problems with my son. We got back Monday night, and on Tuesday night he vomited sometime. Didn't know about it until the morning, he didn't really complain or cry about. He didn't want much food on Tuesday, but he didn't seem sick, he just slept, nursed, and was pretty happy, with no more puking. Then he vomited again this morning, after eating a normal sized breakfast, nursed a bit, and has been normal since then (a few hours). I don't know if he keeps getting the same virus, or if it's something else, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of what it could be, or had something similar. I don't think it's a certain food that's doing it, since he hasn't eaten the same foods before each time, and he has eaten a lot of the same things without getting sick since that first time, but I can't believe he has had the same virus four times, with two weeks in between two of them. Also, every time he has been sick, except the first time a few weeks ago, I have been able to nurse him without him vomiting again, so he is able to keep down some things when he gets this way.

What can I do next?

Kids also sometimes throw up from coughing and post-nasal drip--worth a trip to the doctor!!

I would see the pediatrician. 2 of my kids had weird vomiting issues. 1 had a brain tumor, the other has a digestive disorder. So, I know I am extreme in my beliefs, but, a dr visit never hurt anyone.

I agree, see your doctor. When my daughter vomited one day at breakfast, out of the blue, we took her in since she had not been sleeping as well as usual. Turned out she had a pretty serious ear infection and the doctur surmised that the vomiting might have been due to pain. She had many ear infections around 11 -18 mos and seemed normal and happy during the day, so it was so difficult for us to pinpoint.
Good luck.

Since this is a recurring problem, I would recommend speaking with your pediatrician (at least calling to see if they would like to see him).

There are so many different things that could be causing it, I wouldn't want to speculate. This is the season for bugs to spread as we're all in close quarters and in more direct contact with other people.

I hope he gets to feeling better soon.
Good luck!

Hi A., here is our story. Our daughter is 21 months old and only 19 lbs. She has had reaccuring vomiting and strange poop since she was 6 months old. The Dr's all chalked it up to gastroinities. We ended up in the ER twice for dehydration and being lathargic and was sent home with a "stomache bug". We did all the stool tests and nothing came of it. In November of last year we decided to visit another ped for a second opinion and he decided to run some more tests. He ran a urine sample and found out she has a UTI, so bad that she should have had a 105 fever. Soooo, we ended up at the ped urologist and found out she has urinary reflux which is causing chronic UTI's, bacterial infections, diariah (sp) and vomiting. She never ran a fever. Perhaps you should ask your Ped for a urinealysis.

Take him off al processed carbohydrates like cereals breads, pasta. He will get enough in veges. If you know Weston A Price Foundation, look them up and try to begin fermenting foods. a good cookboook to use is Nourishing Traditions, with lots of information and even a baby food section to make it yourself. Vaccines and other things are ruining our children's guts! M. Nutritional Therapist

It could also be something as simple as contamination, such as, a dirty sponge you use to clean her high chair, etc. does she use a pacifier (and toys that go in he rmouth). if so, perhaps you should boil some water and let them sit in the hot water for a minute. I would use a Lysol wipe to clean/disinfect eating areas, toys, etc. let sit/dry, then wipe with a clean/wet cloth to wipe away chemicals. Check food sources to...she could have an allergy toward something or have developed an allergy toward something. Did you disinfect or clean the bath tub/bath toys really good, she could be reingesting the virus/germs. She wasn't sick on vacation, do your investigative work :) Good luck, sounds really frustrating! Let us know what you come up with!
