My 18 month old has had constant sinus infections since the beginning of the year which then lead into ear infections. So we are going to be having his adenoids removed and tube put in his ears next month. What can we expect after surgery as far as recovery in a little guy like this.

What can I do next?

The tubes alone is like a 5 min. deal and no pain after.... Good luck I am sure he will do fine.

My ODS just had this done this summer, right after his 3rd birthday. Immediately after surgery, he was just tired until the anesthesia wore off. Then he was back to his happy, energetic self!! He did get a throat infection a few days later, from the breathing tube. But he got a shot of antibiotics and he was fine later that day. I think his throat infection hurt him more than getting the tubes and adenoid removal! He has a speech delay, and I've noticed a huge difference in his speech since getting this done. He's saying so much more than he used to (even if it's still hard to understand, he's at least trying now).

An unhappy child.......although, he might feel better pretty quickly...........he'll complain, and be sore.......warm soup might help....

Hang in there and take care.

My son got home and acted like NOTHING HAPPENED it was awesome! When we got home he was still a bit sleepy so he slept then he woke up ready to get on with his day. I would suggest a few good movies that your son might like to watch or even a new movie and have relaxing activites for the most part. This really is not too terribly MAJOR of a surgery so recovery is mostly for the adnoids and minor food restrictions for a few days. Jello was MUCH loved, if you can make the jigglers they are a fav here. In short I would expect him to act much like he is a bit hung over (due to the medicine) but overall ready to play. Mine was 2.5 when he got it done but I think your son will be ok.

My son had his adenoids removed and tubes put in when he was 13 months old. The morning of the surgery was a really early on, we had to be at the hospital by 6am and he usually slept until about 8am. So I got everything ready that I possibly could, then got him out of bed and straight to the car. We got to the hospital and they did all they prep stuff. He wore a cute little hospital gown, the did his weight, blood pressure, etc. Then we waited for the 7am surgery...longest wait ever. He was hungry and didn't understand why he couldn't eat. We did have stuff for him to play with as a distraction.

The doctor came out to make sure we didn't have any last minute questions, we talked for a few minutes. Then a nurse came and took DS back. He started to cry when he couldn't see me anymore, I could hear him. But within a couple minutes he stopped...I knew he was under! The surgery was really quick, before I knew it I could hear him crying again so I knew he was waking up...and not happy about it. I was immediately taken back to him and allowed to hold him and give him his sippy cup. They required him to drink some before we were releases. So about 1/2 an hour later we were being discharged and headed home.

He slept from the time we got back home at like 8:15am until 4pm. He woke up, he ate a little bit of soft food and drank some water, and went back to sleep at about 5pm. He woke again at 7pm, ate a bit and drank some more and was back asleep by 8:30pm. He slept through the night which I wasn't expecting after he slept all day.

The next day he was a little cranky, but some Motrin seemed to help. Our ENT said he'd probably be sore for a day or two more from his neck being cranked back so much during the short surgery. After a day or two with some Motrin on board he was good as new.

He hasn't had a sinus infection or ear infection since!

I was about that age when I had both done. I recovered quickly. When I had to have surgery on my ear later in life to restore hearing, I didn't do too well at recovering because I wasn't still in a growing stage. My nephew just had the same procedure and after a couple of days you wouldn't know he had surgery. He loved the special foods he had to eat like jello and ice cream. He didn't like the fact that he had to cover his ears outside because it was cold.
