19 Month Old Soaks Clothes/crib at Nightime

my 19 month old son wakes up every morning soaked, clothes and sheets. I use huggies overnights and I put a maxi pad inside the diaper, point his privates down, (I read this before) and I have limited his drinks (not stopped) before bed. every morning I have to give him another bath, strip bed, clean mattress, etc. any advice would be appreciated. I don't want to take away his nightime bottle, he really seems to enjoy it, and it's part of our routine, I give him 4 oz. also, even though the crib mattress is plastic on the outer cover and I use another plastic cover over top of that, do you think the mattress is getting ruined also? I cleaned it with dish soap and water and have it outside on the patio to air it out. thanks in advance..

What can I do next?

I could be wrong, but I would think that aiming him down would potentially make it worse since diapers are designed to catch pee where it's normally aimed. Maybe switch him to big boy overnights in the smallest available size. Those are intended to hold what big kids put out. You can also put plastic training pants on him. I used those when I was potty training and they hold a decent amount. The only other thing is that you need to stop the nighttime bottle. It will rot his teeth. It happened to a friend of mine's daughter's teeth. It was awful. They had to be cut out and she then had no front teeth for three years. If you don't want to give that up, give him water.

My son is 3.5 and it still happens there is not too much to do, you are doing everything you can. The only recommendation I have is I layer a blanket or a towel under him so I only have to pick that up and clean him in the morning not the whole bed. Good Luck!

My son did this at a much younger age. He was 3-4 months and had just started sleeping through the night. What I finally ended up doing was waking him up when I went to bed, changed his diaper and put him back to sleep. If your careful, you can change him without even waking him up. And, even though his diaper wasn't soaked that early in the night, it helped him not be overly soaked by morning. Good luck, hope this helps.

Have you tried Pampers? They have an overnight diaper as well. I never had any luck with Huggies.

My daughter started this when she was around 15 months. I certainly don't want to limit any of her liquid intake, as she sometimes does not want to drink much at all. She was/is on a size 3 diaper, and while I tried using other brands and "night time" diapers, it did not help. I started layering her with a size 4 on the outside. This is the only thing that solved the problem. I guess this just tells us they are drinking plenty, and for that I am thankful.

Even though at the age he is , you might want to check to see if he is diabetic. To be on the safe side.

The mattress should be fine if you have a plastic cover on it. You can also buy a few "crib pads" or crib pad fabric & cut into large sections which which will help absorb the leaks (though it adds to your wash). Huggies Overnights hold the most liquid, but my son always ended up soaking the bed as well. Try to wake him up at night to use the bathroom (when you go; that is, if you wake up at night). That might at least lessen the amount of leakage. You just have to take a deep breath & remember all these many loads of laundry from the leaky diapers will be done soon enough (then you'll be doing many loads of laundry of stinky sports clothes). Hang in there -

My 19 month old son (who is a tank at 30 lbs) is in Air Biscuits Cloth Diapers and that kid can go from 8pm to 8am AND sleep in our bed and not soak anything! When I finally change him, they are like 5 pounds, but those suckers don't leak! You can google Air Biscuit Cloth Diapers.

I honestly believe one of the problems may be the maxi pad you're using. They're not designed to take all that liquid at once - your period is a much slower process.

When I was in chemo, I'd have to use something because I was only a few weeks postpartum and hadn't regained full bladder control when I'd get sick. Pads didn't do it but incontinence pads worked great (Poise was the brand I used). They're made for adults who have larger bladders and can take the volume/speed of urinating much better than a regular pad.

Honestly, though, I'd recommend a bigger diaper and making sure to change him before you go to bed and when you wake up.
Our almost 2-year-old daughter is a tank, too, and we only have issues on occasion. She'll drink 12 oz of milk before she goes to sleep almost every night, and it appears her leaking has more to do with our laziness than her diapers.

Good luck. Hoping it won't be an issue too much longer.

My boys go to the bathroom right before bed at 7:30. I get them up again around 10 to pee when I go to bed. That extra trip to the bathroom prevents (or minimizes) their nigh time bed wetting.

Sounds like he is holding it until he sleeps. Start sitting on the potty 30min. before you put him to bed. This can be your reading or flash card time. It's not to early to start training him.You might have to cut out the night bottle and wake him up at night to go potty. Training him will be easier than you think. You just have to do it. He'll be just fine, It will hurt you more than it hurts him, But this why the 'Lord' gave us parents to love, teach, and guide us. Not to just let us do things our way, we have learn the right way. Which in some cases it will takes some hard love. Just as our 'Heavenly 'Father' lets us go thru things that will be hard for us but after we go thru it. We gain knowledge for the next time a problem comes up. and there will be alot of problems

Be sure you put the diaper in the correct way spetially around his legs, also be sure that is the correct size for him. Also be sure that the maxi pad you put inside don´t let the diaper with open spaces between it and his legs

This happened to me all the time with my son around that age. I noticed that the overnights didn't seem to do the job for us. I got the next size up in regular diapers (pampers flexible) than what he used in the day. Some days were really bad but then it calms down after a while. My son had a sippy cup as well in the crib and a bottle before bed. They will grow out of it eventually and have a stronger tolerance through the night. I would suggest finding the right diaper fit and larger size. Same thing happens with overnight pull-ups....they don't work as well for us as the regular day time pull up. The mattress will be ok as you are cleaning it and drying it out. I use Fabreze Anti-microbial spray on it and let it dry. Suggested by ped. dr.

Have you looked into using a diaper doubler? Usually used with cloth but you can also use w/disposables....also I hear of O. mom layering the mattress with pad/sheet/pad/sheet/pad/sheet just to make changing the bed easier--just peel off a sheet and a pad.
Have you considered trying to change him when you go to bed while he's still sleeping? I became a master of that! LOL

Stop the night time bottle.....You are not only adding to the wet bed problem but also rotting his teeth...Any dentist will tell you that the bottle should be stopped....Yes, the mattress is going to be ruined....You need to stop the drinks all together a couple hours before bedtime....that may or may not stop the problem. He may just be a bed wetter.

Hi Sue - the mattress is fine I'm sure especially if it's made of plastic and you keep a plastic cover on it. We had similar problem and just had to buy a bigger size diaper to use at night.

You might try switching to a bigger size in the regular Huggies style rather the one that says "baby-shaped" I dont know much about the Overnight Huggies but I found that a lot of the "baby-shaped" diapers were very low-cut and actually didnt absorb as well as the regular Huggies that fit higher up the belly.

A bottle at 19 months isn't good for his teeth. Also if it's anything but water it's even worse. The reason he's peeing is because of the bottle.

we started putting on my sons regular diaper then put a pull up over the top. the pull up added enough pressure that it kept him from leaking out the top of his diaper (that was his problem) and we have had dry sheets ever since. the pull up generally doesn't get urine on it so we use only about one a week. good luck!
