I was also going to suggest John D. Morgan in Campbell. The last time I was there was pre-baby so I paid no notice of the playground, but they definitely have lots of trees and shade and grassy knolls. :)
My husband and I want to have our son's first birthday at a park (September 6 or 7). We looked at Vasona in Los Gatos, but the reserved picnic areas are booked. Does anyone have suggestions on a park located in the San Jose area where there are trees for shade, grass for games, and playground for kids?

John D. Morgan Park in Campbell...I had my baby shower there. There are numerous picnic areas you can reserve, grass for kids to play, and great playgrounds!!! There is a fee to reserve but well worth it!
Hi M.,
Baylands Park in Sunnyvale...not far from SJ, (is very nice, there is a $5.00 parking fee. We just had my nephews fifth birthday and it was wonderful. Lot's of picnic areas and large BBQ pits. running water for clean up. I'm not sure of any other details, but here's their info.

His other parties have been held in overpriced, noisy places (last year -- The Jungle) what rip off that place is. They heard you in and out of the party rooms as fast as they can...and it's obvious that some of the young workers (which probably only make min wage) hate their jobs and aren't crazy about small children.
Check out John D. Morgan park in Campbell. It has a small safe water feature (no swimming), a playground, picnic tables and lots of shade trees. It is located on Rincon Ave. near San Tomas Expressway at Campbell Ave.
Another shady park is Graystone park with playgrounds, etc. is Graystone park at Mt. Carmel and Camden, near Almaden Expressway.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

Cahalan Park near Blossom Hill and Cahalan. You have to get there early to get the tables you want because you can't reserve them but the park has several trees in the shade with two playgrounds. One for little babies and one for the bigger kids.
I know of a place I was going to have my sons b-day party there the 22nd. But we have made different arrangements. Its in campbell Im not sure of the address it is calabasas BMX park but there is a nice shaded area with 6-10 tables under a nice arbor about 10 feet away is a play area so you can be on the bbq or entertaining and see the kids in clear view. Im not sure of the address like I said but you can look it up on line. It is a first come first serve but not alot of people take the spot. Hope this helps.

Check into Kelley Park on Senter Road, adjacent to Happy Hollow and the Japanese Gardens or Emma Prusch Park at King Road and 101. If you don't mind a bit of a drive (1/2 hour or so), look into Big Basin Park or Henry Cowell (adjacent to the Skunk Train) in Felton.
Emma Prusch Park has a couple of picnic tables and a playground. The Parks & Rec. Dept. holds summer day camp there durig the week. There are also small farm animals, but I don't know if they're accessible on weekends.

Murdock Park in San Jose
Wunderlich Drive and Castle Glen Avenue
San Jose, CA 95106
Murdock Park is 11.5 acres, has restrooms, 12 picnic tables, 2 BBQs,
3 playgrounds, and 4 lighted tennis courts
Here are some reviews from people who have visited the park.

4 star rating 01/20/2008 Murdock is a great neighborhood park, but loses 1 star for busy body neighbors who have a slightly overbearing sense of ownership of the park. West San Jose has very few parks and this is probably one of the best, along with Rainbow, Mise and Calabazas. It's a very nice place to have a picnic. If parking nearby, watch out for the Tulip Trees that drip tons of sap during the late spring/summer.

5 star rating 05/30/2007 This is the best park playground on San Jose's west side for so many reasons:
-it's shady
-has two nice picnic areas (one covered)
-three play structure areas for three different age levels
-clean new

4 star rating 05/30/2005 What an excellent neighborhood park. There are two play structure areas, a couple of BBQ grills, but plenty of picnic tables some shaded and some under the sun. There is sand for the kids to play with, swings and slides for them to release all that excess energy and best of all, pretty clean bathrooms when you need to use them. Wish all the neighborhood parks were this user friendly.

i was at this park in April, and everything the people say is true, it is a fantastic park. Just like any park you do need to get there early and reserve your tables.
If you liked Vasona, you should try it's neighbour Oak Meadow Park. It's officially in the city of Los Gatos, so look at their parks website - you have to book their picnic areas through the city. We had our son's 2nd bday party there. So many great features:
- HUGE HUGE HUGE lawn
- nice play structures including an aeroplane for kids to climb onto
- the train stn right there for anyone that wants to go for a ride
- a carousel right there
We found it ideal, and the kids had a blast with so many things to do.

Hi M. ~
I know of a number of great parks in S.J. but the best way for you to probably get what you're looking for is to just go to www.sjparks.org and it has a lot of great information at your fingertips. Happiest 1st birthday to your little boy!
Checkout Los Paseos Park in South San Jose, Willow Park, the picnic area outside of Kelly Park, and park where Frontierland used to be in South San Jose behind Oak Grove HS. If they don't have play equipment, bring your own--balls, gunny sacks, etc. and organize some fun relays. NancyA
I love cuesta park in Mountain View
there is a really nice park in Sunnyvale. Lots of trees and lots of things to do. There are tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, horseshoe area, big playground. They have a first come first serve table area, and they also have a reserved shaded picnic area. It is called Ponderosa Park, located on Iris Ave.
we just had our son's first bday party at lake elizabeth park in fremont. i know u are looking in san jose, but i thought i'd just suggest it. our family and friends all mostly live in san jose and santa clara and they didn't mind coming out to fremont. we had his party at brook 1, where there was a large and small playground near by and the lake was right across the way, where guest can rent paddle boats and kayaks. also, there is a shallow brook where the kids enjoyed throwing rocks in, crossing, and walking in. a few of the guests even took a walk around the lake! all the guests LOVED the location and lots of trees for shade...and 6 picnic tables. you do have to reserve it tho for $125.
John D. Morgan in Campbell!!!! I love it as a kid and even had several b-day parties there growing up.
