Hi All,

1. My loved one is with 103 fever for four days. We have been to the dr. who said it is a virus... He also has lots of green snot (sorry to be graphic)

2. Today, the fourth day of the fever, his face is also extremely red and rashy in patches -- around his cheeks nose. It could be from the fever, but we are going for a second opinion in any event:

3. Questions: Anyone been through this? Is the red patches normal? Hi fever for 4 days? Any hints, insites, tips?

As usual, I really appreciate everyone's insight....

Jilly

So What Happened?

1. Thanks as usual for great input and support
2. My LO is still with a high fever but happy
3. Dr says rash is from fever and from his rubbing off all the snot etc.... :( What can you do?
4. Learned you can give children's tylenol and advil at intervals to keep fever steadily down.... and not wait every 8 hours for advil meds....

Could the rash be from the snot? I know my kids get red cheeks/rashes when they have lots of snot.
As for fever. If he has cold symptoms and that high of a fever I immediately think secondary infection that may need antibiotics. Does he have a cough? Influenza is also a possibility. DId they swab his nose and test for flu? My son had a high fever and terrible cough but lungs sounded clear at appt. He DID end up having pneumonia though, even though his lungs 'sounded' clear. The antibiotics cleared it up fairly quickly.

That sounds like a virus- I am guessing Fifths disease-or possibly Roseola. Nothing you can do let them go their course and just make them comfortable with Ibuprofin.

This happened to us last fall and it's heartbreaking! My daughter (just turned 3 at the time) had a very high fever (103-5) like that for 7 days! I kept thinking that something else had to be wrong b/c I couldn't believe that she had a fever going for that long...BUT, it was just a virus and magically it disappeared on the 7th day just like the doctor said! The rash could be from the fever it could also be from him constantly blowing/wiping his nose. If it's that snotty and runny then he's probably dragging his arm across his face just as much as you're trying to tissue it, so I'm betting that's where the rash is coming from. If you feel like you need a second opinion then for sure get it, but I think he'll probably be okay in a few more days, just keep him hydrated!

Any time there is green goo or snot, there is something brewing. Take him in for a second opinion. No child should have that high a fever for that long. That said, anything above 101 is most likely viral... High fevers in children can be dangerous. Try to keep the fever at bay with Tylenol or Motrin. Keep him hydrated.
It could turn into a sinus infection... You might consider pushing for a sinus xray or if he is coughing, a chest xray if they don't want to do anything.
YMMV

Did the rash appear after the doctor saw him? Have you talked with the doctor's office as symptoms appeared? Go for a second opinion by all means

We had a recent bout with a respiratory infection just like you described. All four of us caught it and my sinuses still haven't fully recovered. I ended up with strep and Scarlet fever on top of the cold - including laryngitis and a really sore throat. The fever lasted for days, but then gradually stepped down.

Provided your son has the same thing he is probably almost done with the worst of it and will move into recovery. How is his mood? Is he still playing and interested in things? Are his eyes bright? You might want to take him in for another look, even to a clinic if it is the weekend if there is any reason for concern.

1. A virus can cause a high fever and would need to run it's course. Keep him hydrated and comfortable (cool compresses and lots of liquids). However, GREEN snot usually indicates an infection of some kind.

2. No info on the rash.

3. A fever isn't a bad thing, it means his body is doing its job of fighting whatever he has. Provided his fever doesn't get any higher and you keep him hydrated, the fever is not something to be concerned with. If it is an infection (as the snot indicates), his body should be able to fight it off.

Be aware that staying hydrated is the key to helping the fever stay at bay and making him feel better. As the fever goes up, they tend to not want to drink and not drinking w/ a fever causes dehydration which in turn causes the fever to go up and lethargic behavior. As it goes up, they want to drink less thus creating a cycle and making the situation worse. The more you can get him to drink, the more hydrated he will be and the lower the fever will stay thus making him feel better.

Good luck.

It sounds like a virus with that high of a fever, which you can't do anything for beyond giving medicine for the symptoms.
red around his nose and cheeks could be fever and wiping his nose so much.
A virus usally runs it's course in 3-7 days. keep him hydrated and comfortable.
It's likely a second opinion will tell you the same thing your first dr did.

I would be upset if my childs fever was that high. I would take him to another doctor if they are open today or a urgent care clinic like they have in walgreens or cvs. I would believe he has an infection of some sort with that kind of fever. good luck

Hi Jilly,

My son was around 2y 2 months when he was having this fever that would not go away. I called his original pediatrician and she said to try to control the fever using the Motrin/Tylenol.
Since that did not work for the first night, I decided to take him to a clinic that we also use (for the second opinion). In the clinic they did a blood count and saw the white cells count very high. We went back next morning and the count had almost doubled. They decided on an X-ray and my son was diagnosed (to my total shock and surprise) with pneumonia. His chest and ears were clear, he was a little snot (it seemed he was just having a cold). I was really scared but I was also glad that my instincts of taking a second opinion led to this early diagnose.
The moral of the story is: don't believe everything doctors tell you because in the end of the day it is you that spend 24 hours with your kid... Good luck I hope you find a solution soon

Roseola or Fifth's Disease are my two guesses. Both of which are just a wait it out thing....

Sounds like roseola to me. The rash should clear up on its own and the fever should be gone now. I hope he's feeling better!
