Hi Everyone! For 2 days now, my adorable son who is 2 and 1/2 tries to bite everything, chew on everything and keeps putting his hands in his mouth. He has never done these things before unless he was teething. I know that's not it now. It just kind of bothers me. Not a big deal but, just wondering if this means he's stressed, angry, nervous? Any answers you may have would help. Thank you so much. You all have a wonderful group here and I thank God you have this site!

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone for the wonderful responses! Took him to the Dr. and he advised me that Sam has strep throat! Put on antibiotics and now, he's fine. I guess he was chewing on everything b/c his throat was hurting. There are so many sicknesses out there lately. But, we caught it before the strep got bad.

Has your son gotten his 2 year molars yet? My son is 19 mo old and is doing the same thing. I can see the whites of his molars, so just wondering if your son is going through the same thing? If not, good luck!

L.,
"Stressed, angry and nervous" has so many other ways to manifest itself, I doubt that it is that. he may just need to chew. Try something crunchy like apple slices. Also, he may be focusing on his mouth as he tries to talk more. I have heard that biters bite until they can express themselves. Don't know if that is it either, but you might try helping him in that area if you think he has things to say and can't find the right words. And ask the day care providers for some clues on how he is handling his wants in their setting.
Also, if he is drooling it is either teeth or throat. You might want to check both.

Have his two year old molars already come in? Maybe he is teething. Hang in there!

My daughter when through this stage, it may sound mean but it worked.
When she was getting ready to bite my hand I moved my fingers out of the way and she bite herself, She stoped biting after that.

Just curious...are you absolutely sure he is not teething? They get their 2 year molars about that age... sometimes a bit earlier sometimes a bit later...if he already has his, then I am wrong, sorry...but just thought I would mention it...

Good Luck... ;-)

He could still be teething. He may also have another irritation of the mouth, throat, or ear. I would wait and watch a bit longer to see what other signs he shows. It's rare for a kid to all of a sudden start mouthing things at this age, so chances are he is in pain. If he's frustrated, then it will be obvious that he only does this when frustrated. But, that's not how you described it. It sounds like something else is going on. Try giving him popsicles to see if that seems to soothe him. Strep throat is going around wildly right now too.
