2-Year-Old With Grey Teeth?

Hi,
My son is turning two next week and we noticed a couple weeks ago that his teeth are grey. I'm not talking about one or two teeth. It looks like they are ALL pretty grey, but more so on the upper front teeth and closer to the gum-line. We give him a fluoride supplement/multi-vitamin because our water is not fluoridated. We brush his teeth every night. This is the exact same routine we have used with our almost 4-year-old, who has beautiful white teeth. Does anyone know what the cause is? I read that it might be fluoride overdose but we've always given the prescribed dose. We have a doctor's appointment scheduled next month but I'd love some Mama ideas in the meantime. Thanks!

So What Happened?

It's been a bit of a wait and see, but after taking him off the liquid vitamin that also had fluoride and iron and changing to a chewable, his teeth have slowly whitened! I did have a dentist take a look and she said it just looked like staining. He has yet to allow a dentist in his mouth for a polish, however! Thanks mamas!

Okay, this may sound a little weird but when I had my braces (many many moons ago) I had to use a fluoride rinse. It stained my teeth so yellow that I still have spots that never quite "came out". Later on, it became clear I was pretty sensitive to the stuff. Increased water treatment like in the Spring time when run off is "dirtier" they add more chemicals to the water..including fluoride (where I grew up). I started getting really bad headaches. I still have to be careful of "city water" . If it smells "bleachy"...I have to mix it with juice or gag drinking it and I still have to put up with the digestive end of the allergy..which isn't horribly severe but it is there and its inconvenient if nothing else. I don't drink bottled water for ethical reasons..so..my suggestion is to stop the supplements if you have fluoridated toothpaste and go from there. We only use the Arm and Hammer stuff. (and we buy whichever variety is on sale..but you might want the whitening formula for a bit.

STOP giving your son fluoride interally!! this is bad for the body in many ways!! topically is okay...in the toothpaste at the dentist, but do not let him eat anymore internally - doesn't the toothpaste package say not to swallow?

Okay, now that I am done with that, yes, it would be wise to take him to the dentist to find out what is going on...but please don't give your son anymore fluoride to eat.

J. - I would advise against ingesting fluoride. A little-known fact is that it's actually poisonous when ingested. It's crazy that the city governments of the US put it in our drinking water! It strengthens enamel when applied topically, but actually causes all kinds of problems when taken internally. Most dentists know this and will tell you about the side effects if you ask. I know it sounds like another conspiracy theory, but if you read about the history of fluoride, you learn that it is a by-product of the aluminum industry, and none of us would have our children swallow aluminum tablets!

Anyway, I can't tell you for sure that the fluoride is discoloring his teeth, but my dentist has told me that fluoride causes problems with a lot of his patients.

Antibiotic reaction or possible rotting teeth...see Dr. Pike, he's a great pediatric dentist.

Flouride can cause discoloration, and what is the right dose for one child could conceivably be too much for another. But foods can also cause grey teeth. Does he eat lots of berries?

My two year old and four year old had the same thing. My ped. dentist said to brush their teeth with Baking Soda. It could be fluoride overdose, so if the Baking Soda does not work I would take him to a ped. dentist.

Our pediatrician just talked to us about this last week and it is almost certainly the multivitamin even with immediate brushing. She suggested the flintstones complete vitamins instead. She said the gummy ones don't actually have the vitamins that are beneficial and that they are basically glorified candy.

Take him to a pediatric dentist if you can. My son has one grey tooth, but it happened after he fell off his bike and is actually a "dead tooth." Now would be a good time to start regular dentist visits anyway.

Has he taken lots of antibiotics? That can definitely have an impact on teeth, both color AND shape.

My son had to take an antibiotic for a short period of time and i noticed his teeth turned darker. It was temporary and his teeth returned to normal again once he was off the meds.

Fluoride is toxic to the body in so many ways! Get him off of it! Use a baby toothpaste with not fluoride or make your own with baking soda..

J.-This happened to us as well. It was because our son's multi-vitamin had iron in it. We stopped giving it to him but his teeth are still discolored.

I strongly recommend you start taking him to the dentist. Also check into the water, most are flouridated, even up here in Alaska it is!
