2 Year Molars - HELP!

Our 2 1/2 year old is getting his 2 year molars. He was at the ped on Monday and has a double ear infection - been 3 days on amox. He is screaming all day and all night and we are at the end of our rope. Frozen washcloth, teething tablets, motrin, tylenol, orajel - we've tried it all and he still keeps screaming. Does anyone have any ideas what can help us get through this with a little bit of sanity?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We ended up taking him back to the Dr. yesterday and sure enough the amox wasn't clearing up the infection. Although I was still up with him 3 times last night at least we got some sleep.

Hi Shelley!

I'm so sorry for the pain and agony you all are going thru.

Here is a tip that works...tho it sounds funny. Put a half of onion in the blender (may need a tablespoon of water to help it blend) Make juice of the onion. strain it thru a paper coffee filter or bounty paper towel. Put a few drops of the room temperature juice into your little boy's ears. Have him lay on his side for 10-20 minutes per ear. cover the ear with the juice before he rolls over to do the other ear. We've had great success with this. It brings a lot of relief.

Give me a call if you want to talk about it.

My son's pediatrian told me the problem with baby orajel is that kids that are teething have so much saliva that it washes the orajel right off ... he recommended taking your finger, or a q-tip and dipping it in some whiskey and rubbing the q-tip or your finger over the little guy's gums. The whiskey will sting for a second, and you may have to rub it two or three times to get it over all of the gums, but it won't make the little guy an alcoholic and it won't get him drunk. Alcohol will numb the pain from the teething; my friends used it with her kids and it is the only thing that helped my son and is helping my daughter through the pain of teething and letting us get any sleep at all. :) And for something for him to chew on, Barry's Bagels in Ann Arbor makes teething bagels and my brother and my son used them and loved them. Good luck!

This is so painful for little ones. Even tho I am a 'Natural' girl, I know when to pull out the pain drugs, too.

I did use Tylenol and Motrin (My ped told me the best way to dose it, so check WITH THEM to feel safe!). I also added Arnica and Chammilla (a homeopathic) as this is something that can help (but you need to research your child's profile before using or know about this before you do it!).

I also worked my son's feet. So much is 'mapped' on the feet that this helped to sooth him. It helped the endorphins kick in and helped for sleep.

Don't forget: when they have an ear infection, and they are laid down, the pressure builds and the pain can be worse. Especially when the molars are also pressing there. It all ties in together.

Lot's of cold wash clothes and teether's they can get into the mouth help so much (more than you think they do.)

As for tubes, I wish I knew about a few holistic things before I put my son under for this. If I tried it; I think it would have worked better. But I was clueless about it. Just know there are other 'Alternative' options that are safe and natural that do not further stress your child out. I only wish I knew as my son was petrified that he was separated from me at the hospital. (And made me feel worse.)

You will get thru this, just breathe and hold on tightly to him! You being there helps just as much as anything else! :)

Hi. I would think it is probably the ear that hurts most. I remember having bad ear aches when little. My mom held very warm dry washcloths on my ear. what about a heating pad for the ear? might help.

Make sure his ear infections are gone! Before tubes, my son had ear infections all the time and they didn't go away. He would cry 24/7 and we were about ready to quit as parents...come to find out, his ears were really hurting him! If that doesn't work, have you tried tylenol then 2 hours later motrin, then 4 hours later tylenol again? Trust me, this is safe, ask your ped. if you aren't sure. This is what helped us through the ears in our house.

I'd say call the doctor back. It's likely it's the ears still. My daughter got a nasty ear infection a few months back and after 3-4 days on amoxicillin she wasn't better so I took her back and they gave her a different antibiotic and within 24 hours I saw an improvement. Anti-biotics should only take a couple of days to show a significant improvement.

Also, with ear infections and teething - it hurts the most when laying down due to the bloodflow and the build-up of pressure. Try putting some towels under the mattress so the head of the bed is elevated a little. It won't stop it from hurting, but it might help him get a little more sleep. I also found that the ibuprofen helps more with my daughter than the tylenol.

Poor guy. It sucks when our little ones are sick doesn't it?!

At two and a half he should already have all his teeth. You should go to a pediatric dentist for a check, it sounds like something else is going on.

A Baltic Amber teething necklace. My daughter was getting 4 molars in at once and was a miserable mess, within 2 hours of putting the necklace on she was happy and content. We too were giving her tylenol and motrin rotated every 4 hours and teething tablets, but she was still miserable. It could also be the antibiotic. If you want info on the necklace pm me, I have one in stock.

My family follows the hollistic approach to health care (teething included) and my oldest (7) only has had one ear infection and my younger two (4 1/2 & 2 1/2) have never had ear infections due to either illness or teeth. When they were going through the process we would tug gently on their earlobe down and out to open the eustachion tube, releasing pressure. This works for us also when we feel our ears filling up, but adults need to usually tug pretty hard to get the 'crack' results. Our children would cry during the tug because it is painful when the ear is inflamed, but lots of hugs and kisses following usually helps. This is a technique our chiropractor taught us and it works!
Hang in there!

Call the doc back. Be honest with her that he is screaming in pain and you have tried it all and you are at the end of your rope. Perhaps it's more...ears, throat, sinus, teeth....it all adds up to misery!
