So it started 4 days ago. Up till now his only symptoms have been a runny nose and a cough. This afternoon he started feeling a bit warm and slept most of the day, which is super out of character for him. He didn’t really eat anything today but was drinking a lot of grape juice and Gatorade. Now at midnight he’s up to a fever of 103. I have 2 kids and this is the first time I’m dealing with an illness. So I feel like a new parent all over again. I only was able to get a little bit of Tylenol in him. He’s also had some cough medicine the last few days.

What can I do next?

Keep giving him fluids and Tylenol, monitor him through the night. In the morning call his doctor.
You can also wipe him down with a wet wash cloth, not cold just wet.

103 is not to mess with... I would call the nurse line or urgent care now to get advice and see the Dr asap.

You shouldn't be posting online about this but getting you child to the pediatrician or urgent care. A fever of 103 is very serious and could trigger febrile seizures.

You need to get the Tylenol in him. Lay him down and put his cheeks between your knees, pinch his cheeks together and pour the Tylenol down his throat. You have to do this to get medicine in him. No if's, and's or but's.

Pedialyte is better than grape juice. I would not be giving him all that grape juice. He also needs water.

You should take him to the doctor since you're on day 5.

It sounds like what started as a cold has turned into an infection. Could be a sinus infection, ear infection, pneumonia etc. on ly a doctor can diagnosis him.

welcome to mamapedia!

Your son needs to be seen by a doctor. any fever over 102 is not something you mess with. Keep cool compresses on his head. Call the doctor and ask when he can be seen. If not today? then take him to an urgent care and get him seen.

You can put him in a warm bath and let it cool off - which might help bring his fever down. You do NOT want him going into febrile seizures due to high temperature.

Good luck!

103 is high. Especially if he's had Tylenol and cough medicine (usually has something in it I think for fevers too).

Sleeping most of the day with that high a temperature means he's lethargic - which is a symptom they tell you to watch for, so I'd call or take him in.

If he wasn't responsive, then it would be urgent - but this sounds bad enough to have him checked out.

I always kept my kids medicated (alternated between kids Tylenol and Advil, so they never weren't medicated when they were feverish or in pain) so I don't know if their fevers would have got that high - but I would do the cold compresses and possibly the warm/coolish bath to bring that temp down I think in the meantime. At the very least - give your doctor's office a call and see what they suggest.

Hope he's feeling better soon
