2 Yo Takes His Diaper off After Nap Time.

AAAHHHH!!! I just walked into my 2 yo room and I found him naked and happily playing in a pile of poo! He has been undressing himself after naps to nakedness and I just thought it was cute. It NEVER crossed my mind that one day there would be poop involved. I feel like such a fool for not nipping this in the bud.

He started taking off his diaper after his nap about 2 weeks ago but it was off and on. I haven't been dressing him in shorts alot this summer but once I started making sure he was wearing shorts for his naps it stopped. For a couple of days. Then he figured out how to get his shorts off. I do not think he is ready to potty train so that is not an option for us yet. He also just doesn't "get it" when it comes to discipline. I do time outs and keep hoping they will start to work. Please let me know that I am not alone. And if you have been here please let me know how you have dealt with this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I tried the onesie thing and so far it has worked. I am so glad that I asked you all for help on this issue. I was so grossed out when this incident happened but in the end my story got LOTS of laughs. So it could have been worse. Thanks for your support.

My nephew was doing the same thing at two years old -- actually, taking off his diaper and pooping on the floor. She has started looking into potty training him and so far, things are working out.

Is he pulling off his diaper to then poop? Maybe then he is ready to potty train...

I'd probably touch base with his pediatrician and inquire about it. I'd be careful about disciplining him on pulling off his diaper, especially with the poop involved, as he might be trying to tell you something.

Good luck!

Oh my goodness, I just posted about this exact problem with my 2 year old a few weeks ago....look back at some of the responses that I got. People suggested everything from putting on the diaper backwards to putting on onesies, but for me, it didn't work. My daughter can undo the snaps and she just manages to get out of everything. And my husband and I honestly do not think she is quite ready for potty training yet. (we've tried it, and backed off, because I am due with a baby in a few weeks and she's just not that interested) I soooo know what you are going through. What finally worked for us is putting pullups or a swimmy diaper over her regular diaper at naps and a night time, and so FAR she hasn't gotten out of it. If she gets out of that, I think we are going to resort to the duct tape. Good luck, and you are not alone! I know the feeling!!!

It seems like hes waking up earlier for his naps becuase he has time to tkae it off and play. Maybe you could go in and check a little earlier than his regualr wake time and do something fun togheter. If you make this a ritual he may be excited to go do the fun activity with mummy and forget all about his diaper. If other suggesstions dont work my one friend did duct tape on her kids diapers at night. I would say htough your best bet is to try nad catrchhim when he first wakes up nad go play nad have a snack toghter.

Hi Cia,

Oh boy, did my son do this, too! It was such a gross pain in the butt to clean up! I put on the one piece jammies backward and it worked like a charm. In fact, one day (after about 1-2 wks. of doing this) I let him nap in his regular clothes and he never took his diaper off again. I had to buy the jammies with the feet in them and cut them off - I couldn't find footless jammies. Good luck - it really is just a phase. :0)

An article in the most recent Parenting magazine pictured and suggested duct tape. Not sure about getting the diaper off then but I am sure it would keep everything in and on... good luck!

one piece rompers or overalls that button or snap in the front can be put on backwards. usually they can't escape them since they can't reach the buttons/zip/ect very well. you'll have to watch out for ones that snap at the crotch. the traditional method is using zipper foot pj's and cutting off the feet (of if you can find them, footless varieties of the same style).

My kids have both done that. I started putting diapers on backwards! Try it, it might work for you. My daughter eventually figured out how to get it off even when it was backwards though. You could also put him in a onesie for naptime, maybe that would deter him. Good luck!!

My daughter is 18 months and she does this everytime she is wet. i figured if she could understand she was wet she could start potty training, but she won't have it at all.I try to keep something on her at all times and then i still have to watch her she will reach inside her pants to get at the tabs to get them apart. i started allowing her to wear big girl panties and giving her stickers trying to get her excited about using the potty.she will run with her big sisters and go an sit but that is it so far,but at least she is getting the idea where to go. I don't think she is rdy yet either. I'd say take him an let him pick some big boy underwear out and get a sticker chart with stickers he likes and do a lil each day with out pushing the issue and see what happens

This happened to us not too long ago! Good news is that it's just a phase. I put my daughter's diaper on backwards. That worked! If that doesn't help, maybe a pull up or swim diaper. They are harder to pull off. Hope this helps and good luck!

Could he undo a onesie/t shirt with snaps on the bottom? I used to put a onesie and a pair of shorts on my son at nap time since he did the same thing.

I agree with putting a sun suit or something like that on him that would be harder to for him to get off of himself. A video monitor would help you to see what's going on in his room at nap time!

The G diapers (flushable disposable ones) have outer covers with velcro that go on backwards. You could try to get one of them and put over the disposable. We use cloth and though my son isn't this old yet, I don't think he could get the snaps of the FuzziBunz undone-- might be worth getting one of those and putting it on backwards. I also have heard about people putting the sleepers on backwards-- if your kid can unzip a sleeper that is put on backwards and then get his diaper off without you noticing, I think it is time to call Cirque du Soleil! lol.

I have not had this probably and would not necessarily take this approach myself ... but I just received the latest issue of Parent magazine and this very issue was in the magazine. One mom enforced the sticky tabs with duct tape to keep the diaper secure during nap time - in case you are at your wit's end.

Good Luck!

My 2 year old had somewhat similar issues - I went to a consignment shop and got some onsies. They made it harder for him to move stuff around down there!

My MIL uses duct tape to keep diapers on the kids in her daycare room - a piece just big enough to go across the front and cover each of the tabs.

Hi Cia, LOL I just had to laugh. I think every Mom has to deal with a ucky poo situation at least once! Geezzz, I'm glad my girls are long past that age! My suggestion is that you put him in a oneise for nap time. If he can't undo the snaps your safe for a while! I love oneise's on little one's in the summer, they are cool and comfortable and easy on and off for parents. The little one I babysit for wears them all the time and I love it! LOL I almost wish I could wear them! Good luck and best wishes!

PS Keep working on those time-outs! Sometimes it's all about where you have the time-out place. I have different places for all three of my daughters because each one of them has a different spot of discomfert. One goes to the stairs cause she can't stand watching life go past, one goes to her room because she hates to be isolated the other has to sit in the dinning room because she'd LOVE to be alone in her room! And my girls are teen's and a tween!

My 22 month old learned how to take off his diaper about 2 months ago. He could take off his shorts and get to his diaper. He could pull the onesie aside and get at least one side of diaper and pull it loose. Of course, he peed on everything in the crib while the diaper was off. My solution is to put a onesie on him as well as masking tape. I put a strip of masking tape across the tabs which is easy for us to pull off but he can't get off. No wet cribs since then!

My daughter is 17 months old and she figured out the same thing. What I did is use oneses (sorry about the sp) for about 2 weeks when she went down at night and for her naps. It seemed to work. I've been letting her run around in her diaper without any problems now, she also in that time period learned to say diaper and dodo to tell me she needs changed. Good luck!

My daughter is two and a half and I put her in a onesie at nap time. I also agree with the pull-ups, however I wouldn't use the swim diapers because they will leak (they aren't very absorbent).

My 4th child used to do this. He is now 11 and I hate to say we (and he) all have a good laugh when we reminicse about his "poop smearing" daze!! I can't offer any advice because I, too, was stumped as to how to handle this. I was given the advice to duct tape his diaper on so he could not remove it!!! oh my!! honestly, he just stopped doing it and....he was the easiest to potty train. He never needed a pull up and never had any accidents, ever!!! Hang in there! Hopefully you can laugh about this one day too!! Good luck!
Oh by the way, the only thing i can say that helped was that he never had any poop around his mouth......that would have been really gross!!!

Well, my mom's favorite story about my two year old time is when I woke up from my nap, took off my poopy diaper and played quietly until she came to check on me. Supposedly I had poop EVERYWHERE! In my hair, my ears, my finger and toe nails, between my toes, and yes...in my MOUTH! I also used lovely concoction to decorate the walls, bedding, stuffed animals, etc. I guess the point of me telling you this lovely story of my childhood is that it's not entirely abnormal for your little guy to be interested in the stuff. Afterall, it does come from his body, why shouldn't he be entitled to play with it right? If only he understood the disgustingness of it all.
