2 Yr Old with Bacterial and Fungal Infection in Finger Cuticle

My 2 year old daughter had a sore cuticle at the end of May. I thought it would just get better, but unfortunately it didn't. It has been red, swollen, irritated since then. We have been to the pediatrician a few times and she was on 2 antibiotics, a round of cephalexin and a round of clindamycin. We are now seeing a dermatologist, he is the one that did a culture and found out it was a bacterial infection AND a fungal infection. We've now treated with Gentamicin drops for the bacterial infection and Loprox lotion for the fungal infection. It improved to a point with these medicines, but didn't heal it.
We've also been treating with steriod creme to help with the inflamation. Now the dr. has prescribed diflucan which treats fungal & yeast infections, but our insurance won't cover it and we can't afford, even the generic brand is over $100 for 7 doses. I'm very worried about my daughter's finger and don't know what to do. I'm also concerned about her being on so many antibiotics Can anyone suggest a natural or herbal remedy that they've had success with for bacterial and fungal infections?? Does anyone know about Olive tree oil for these infections for a child? If you have any other advise please I would be so appreciative.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hello Moms!

I'm happy to report that my daughters infected finger is all better, except for the deformed nail that needs to grow
out. The doctor did prescribe Diflucan which I was skeptical of since we'd already been on so many antibiotics. It did work though and I'm so happy not to worry about her finger anymore. Thanks for all your responses, they are much appreciated and gave me some alternatives for future reference should this happen again.

I would also suggest looking into Tea Trea Oil which is a natural antiseptic. I know several people who have used it with good results. You might have to look a bit to find some. I buy my essential oils from a booth at a flea market that sells candles/salts etc.

Hi S., I just had an infection too that went in under my thumb nail bed. The dr. prescribed cephalexin and he recommended that I wrap or soak my thumb in warm water with epsom salts. So, I soaked my thumb for a couple of minutes in the warm epsom salt water a couple of times one day and the blister drained. I then kept a bandaid with triple antibiotic cream on my thumb. It worked. I would suggest that you let her eat as many Gogurt tubes of yogurt or Trix yogurts since she has taken so many antibiotics. That will help get the acidopholus (good bacterias) into her and help ward off yeast infections. I even freeze the Gogurt tubes as a treat for the kids. Also, call your daughters doctor and let them know that you can't afford the Diflucan. I'm sure he/she will have a suggestion or even a sample. Good Luck! Oh, if your daughter sucks her thumb, try to discourage that because of the infection. I hope this info. helps.

It is so frustrating to spend so much time and money on something and not have it work. Work with your doctor-- he or she might be able to get you a sample or get the insurance company to pay for it. Also, call around-- prices for different drugs vary WIDELY and it may be more like $40 somewhere else. If you belong to sams or Costco, call their pharmacies. Also, Target has had a coupon for a free $25 gift card for a new prescription recently and many other places do the same thing-- check the sunday paper.

You can ask your doctor about a non-prescription medication, but, this is your daughter's finger-- and if it gets worse, can you afford a hospital stay? Cancel Internet or cable or something for a month and do what the doctor says! :-)

Do you think the doctors office might have samples they could give you? I'd explain your predicament to them and see what they suggest.

Hi S., my name is D. and i'm sorry to hear about your daughters finger. I'ts a shame but the diflucan will probably be the most helpful of all the doctor's perscriptions. It sounds like your daughter may have a candida infection. Yeast (candida) is also a fungus. It can leave you more suseptible to bacteria infections. If it were my child I would give them a good probiotic, something with at least 7 different strains of bacteria. Capsules can be opened and put in some water or juice. Try to cut back on the diary, Rice milk is a nice substitute, if you don't like soy. Tea tree oil will work topically, as well as lavendar. Soak the foot in some water with a few drops of oil. Your local health food store should have these things.

If I remember correctly diflucan is for yeast infections. Probiotics do the same thing. However with her having this so long I think I would bite the bullet & at least get the generic to get this thing cleared up. You don't want to mess around with these types of infections. After she takes that & it clears up ask at the vitamin store or walgreens at the pharmacy for probiotics for children. It is like yogurt in a pill & helps balance the good & bad bacteria in your body. It is especially good to take after having antibiotics, because you can then get a yeast infection.

If she hasn't been able to clear it out with a topical medication by now, she's going to need an oral treatment like the diflucan. I would have the doctor's office dispute the coverage with the insurance company, since it's not being used for something that can be treated with the cream (obviously, since you've tried and it didn't work).

i would suggest tea tree oil or silver shield- it kills bacteria- viruses & mold. its totally safe for adults and kids. we use this all the time instead of anitbiotics and it doesn't destroy your good bacteria. Also like someone said after being on antibiotics she needs probiotics to put the good bacteria back in your body. natures sunshine sells
l.reuteri which is a lemon flavored chewable- great for kids. let me know if u have any ?'s. hope your daughter gets better soon!

Go to the GNC store (or similar) and get a box of Pau D' Arco tea. Every day make a cup and put some in a small bowl and have her sit for about 10-15mins. with her finger in it. It wouldn't hurt for her to drink the remainder, but I will warn you it is very bitter and she may not - soaking will probably be the only thing she'll do for you. Do this for a couple weeks - you may see improvement before, but keep soaking. My mom had a fungal infection in her finger and this was the only thing that worked - it was the only thing that worked for my children's thrush also. Good Luck.

call the doctor and see if they have samples. Or have the doctor call up your insurance company to see how to get it paid for.

Dear S.,
Because your child has been on so many antibiotics, you may have to help yourself before your child gets worse. I know I had to read a lot and ask the doctor intelligent questions regarding what my child has be exposed to and where do you go from here.
Good luck,
E.
