2.5 Year Old Stuttering or Something ?

Before making your decision, you might want to consider whether anyone in your, or your husband's, family stutters. Although children around age three often do experience some disfluent speech, if your child has a family history of stuttering, it would be wise to contact a speech-language pathologist. You would definitely want to be sure the speech-language pathologist has experience with stuttering, especially with young children.

One thing I would strongly suggest is to be sure your face does not express concern when your child makes those repetitious sounds. You certainly would not want to create an issue where one may not even exist. The National Stuttering Association has a great website and wonderful resources that are very inexpensive (I think $5.00 per booklet). I have shared many of their materials with my own clients (I am a speech-language pathologist).

It could have something to do with hearing the different languages, but it's so common at that age all the way into school age because their minds are going faster than they can get it out. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

I also agree that their brains work faster than they may be able to say it. My 2.6 year old is extremely advanced in his talking (he's like a little 5 year old) and he sometimes does that. It's like the thought went much too fast for him to say. It might be good to enroll her in some kind of program where she can socialize but I wouldn't worry about the stuttering.

I noticed about this age that my kids mouth and mind didn't always work at the same speed.... like thier mouth took off before the brain had completed the thought, or that they were thinking faster than they could talk. I encouraged them to slow down, think about what they wanted to say, and assured them that I had time to listen. If she's struggling with which language to use, the slow down and think it through thing will help as well. Your also encouraging engaging the mind before the mouth sets in motion... something some of us don't learn until we're 30!

I wouldn't call this stuttering unless she's puh puh puh ing before every p word.. she may just be fishing through the english / punjab dictionary in her head for the word she wants to say.

I wouldn't stress at this point.

I agree with Misty, I wouldn't worry about it. They are learning so much so fast and their brains and thinking faster than they can say it. I think it's great she's learning two languages, that is a true blessing for her!
