2T Or 3T... Help

I want to buy my baby some cute halter sundresses on etsy but don't know whether to buy 2T or 3T since warm weather isn't consistently here for 5 months. All the summer dresses are on sale for good prices now... Do 2 year olds typically stay 2T until they are closer to 3? She's 33inches and 27lbs right now. Just want to know average sizes.

Also how do you keep clothes from shrinking/stretching? Her clothes shrink (after the 1st wash) and my clothes stretch... that's weird.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks guys, I think I'll do 2T because I am getting pillowcase dresses and they are pretty long (19 1/2") and the sleeves are either halter (tie) or ribbon straps that tie so it's somewhat adjustable. My daughter seems to outgrow shirts fast and pants slowww. I do wash my clothes in cold but didn't know the load size could affect it (mine are always big) and I will try a gentler cycle.

I would go with the 3T just based on her size. Dresses you can pair with a long sleeve T and leggings and wear when it cools off.

Buy the size she'll be growing into, halters tie at the neck and will be forgiving. Pillowcase dresses are usually made with 100% cotton and will shrink every time. It is the nature of cotton to shrink. Go with the bigger size, it will last longer. A pillowcase dress can still be cute with leggings when they start getting too short. My sister's site on etsy used to have several with her granddaughter wearing leggings and it was cute.

My sister always asks how long it is from the collar bone or shoulder top to the child's knees so she will make them the right length. She doesn't really go by traditional sizes, she goes by the child's length.

I hope you find lots of cute clothes!

What I can tell you is that summer clothes always last 2+ seasons! Dresses get shorter, as do capris and shorts, but not usually smaller. Go look at some 2t/3t dresses now. If 3t is huge - stick to 2t. You don't want a dress with too big of arms and shoulders.

My daughter was 33" at her 2 year appt 5 mos ago and is 34 lbs now. I bought a 2t pillowcase dress on Etsy a couple of weeks ago. It is plenty big. Just check the length...this one was 21" I believe and that was plenty long. I just measured one of the dresses she wears now and compared the length.

With the pillowcase dresses, they can be worn as a top as they get shorter on them. It was super cute!

My daughter is 37" tall an 29lbs and typically wears a 3T in pillowcase and halter type dresses. I make them for Etsy too. :) I would say your daughter would wear a 2T.

I'm sorry to say that just because clothing is marked with an age (two or three, for instance), it has little or no relation to whether your child will fit them when the time comes! Children grow at such different rates. And besides that, the same size marking means different things to different clothing manufacturers. If it were me, I'd buy a couple in each size and be safe. What she doesn't grow into by this summer she will (perhaps!) wear the next year.

Do you do your laundry at the laundromat or at home? Try washing your clothes with warm or cold water rather than hot. If the machine you use has a quite vigorous action, try setting it at a gentler cycle. Don't stuff too many clothes into the machine at once, and check the temperatures of your drier settings so you don't dry clothes on too high a temp. You can line dry anything you're worried about. Some clothes will get out of shape (one way or another) no matter what you try, simply because they aren't made of good fabric.

Hope this helps.

My daughter was petite like your daughter is, she stayed that way all the way through her 2's. I would be willing to bet that if you buy 2t, it would be fine. Its the pants/shorts that I have found that she grows through quickly. Also, if the little dresses are very short to begin with, stay away from those, she will grow right out of them faster. As for her little clothes shrinking, the only way around that is to keep them away from the heat. No hot tumble drying, just the airdry setting.

I would find out what the height and weight measurements are for those sizes. All brands have them, and depending on the brand they differ. especially starting at 2T. I'm not sure why, but it drives me nuts. For instance, a Gap/Old Navy 3T is the same as Target's Circco 4T (my daughter is 3). I have to really pay attention to the tags and what they say for height and weight instead of the size 3T/4T etc... Best way would be to message the seller and ask about the sizing if it's not posted on the site.

As for shrinking/ stretching? Not sure..Kids clothes aren't made to last, either are my clothes lately, considering I have to buy everything cheap these days (budgeting), so I turn everything inside out, and use the delicate wash cycle (my set is cheap and seems hard on clothes if I use the regular setting) and I dry on med/low. Some things I hang dry. I also use very little soap, like 1/2 or 1/4 of what they suggest. By doing all of this, I have noticed the clothes are lasting longer.
Good luck!

kids clothes are hard to figure.. my daughter is tall and super skinny ..she has long legs.. so she grows out of pants - she has a shorter torso so she doesnt grow out of shirts.. Because she is tall.. I buy dresses a size big.. Dresses can be a bit long.. and then the kid grows and the dress still fits.. if the dress is too short.. sometimes you can still wear it with leggings underneath.

Also the size of kids clothes varies depending on the brand.. gymboree runs super big... childrens place runs super small.

I guess it depends on her age, and how close she is to 3, especially when summer is here, and if she is average height, or below or above. My daughter is 3 and she's always been tall and I've always had to get the next size up for the most part (i.e. she's mostly in 4T sizes now). And I've noticed the same thing with certain stores - Children's Place does run small, she got 4T sweaters for Christmas and they look small on her!

Maybe send the person on Etsy a message and ask them? Otherwise I would go with the 3T (it will fit eventually!) and if it's huge, wash it once and see how much it shrinks. Otherwise wash the clothes in cold water to try to prevent shrinkage.

I would buy the 3, but my dd is always tall and needs the bigger size. They arent consistent, Children's Place, for example, always runs small on her.

If you have something you dont want to shrink, line dry it. I'm not sure about the stretching.
