I went in for an ultrasound today at 32 weeks, and the ultrasound tech mentioned something about the baby having a 3 coiled cord and you can tell because it looks like an upside down mickey mouse head. does this mean there is something wrong? is it normal? the tech wouldnt give me an answer, and now im nervous waiting for the doctor. sorry for blasting so many questions here..

What can I do next?

Wait for the doctor.
He/she will explain and answer all your questions.

Umbilical cords is mobile, and baby in the womb is mobile too. Things can get tangle up. It usually get's dangerous when when there's a coiled cord DURING delivery and the cord is asphyxiating the baby because the cord is still connected to the mother, and the baby is pushing out, and the cord tightens around the neck. If the coil is loose, it won't cause any problem. If the coil is tight, the problem arise. It also may cause distress in the baby while in the womb before delivery time.

The doctor will discuss with you all this. If you are still unclear, ask him/her what can happen in stages - right now, before delivery, during delivery, and the best way for delivery.

Hang in there. Get the full explanation first. Take deep breaths in between.

I guess I am not sure what you mean by this. If you look at a cross-section of an umbilical cord, I believe you should see a Mickey Mouse type pattern as there are two veins and one artery in kind of a triangle shape. This is what I saw on my 20 week ultrasound and it was deemed normal.

Wait and see what the doctor says, though. I wouldn't get yourself all worried in the meantime :)

Good luck!

Don't you just love it when a tech (or a nurse) tells you something that they then can't explain? I wouldn't get stressed over this. But what I would do is talk to the doctor when you next see him (or her) and explain that the tech telling you about the cord, but then not giving you an answer when you asked what it meant was a source of worry for you. Perhaps the doctor will be able to let the techs know that when they see something to be careful how much or what they say to patients in the future and if it's something they can't, or aren't allowed to explain, just don't mention it. After all, it is what it is, and not knowing until the doctor tells you wouldn't make any difference... but would have made your life much easier while you wait for what the doctor says.

As far as I know a 3 vessel cord is normal...assuming that's what the tech meant when they said 3 coiled. I know there can be problems with a 2 vessel cord. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Not sure what this means. I just thought I'd add in here a little about my experience. My son's cord was wrapped around his neck once. My doula told me this can happen and is normal. It's when the cord is wrapped around multiple times that it can cause a problem in delivery. I still had a vaginal birth and I don't think they knew about this until the time of delivery. It made for a harder time pushing because he kept getting pulled back, but he was born healthy and fine. Good luck to you! Don't worry!
