3 Weeks Late...

I'm 3 weeks late and both urine and blood tests have come back negative for pregnancy. I'm usually very regular. I did have thryoid test done about 1 year ago and it was slightly elevated but I did not go on meds for it. Has anyone experienced a thyroid problem and had it cause probs with your cycles? Could I be prego even if every test is showing negative?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My period finally started just over 3 weeks late. I had my thyroid tested and my result came back more elevated than a year ago. I will be going to see my doctor this week to discuss how to treat it and the effects any treament can have on a future pregnancy if we ever get pregnant. I am hoping to find a way to treat it without medication.

Yes. had major problems with my cycle until I went on meds and I was not even completely "eleveated" according to every doctor. Get tested again (you should do it every year and more often as you are going through pregnancy and post). The medication has no side effects and ony benefits for me (more energy, regular cycles) and is not expensive.

Hi B., if the blood test is negative then you aren't pregnant. BetaHcG shows presents in the blood quite early.(I do these tests as part of my job, and had my own pregnancy confirmed via blood test at 3 weeks) Are you under any additonal stress? (other than working full time both in and out of the home..wow!) Stress does it for me, I once went 18 months without a period because of stress in my life. Also weight loss, if you've lost quite a bit lately or are under weight. Give your doctor a call, your thyroid could very well be up to no good. good luck with finding your answer.

Hello B.,

I personally don't think that you're pregnant, only because of the test that you took...the thyroid has a lot to do with that.

You mentioned your thyroid. I think that you should see about getting blood tests done regarding your thyroid again. Thyroid testing needs to be done every year and it sounds like you need to be tested again.

I do know a little bit about the thyroid issue. I am aware that a woman who has thyroid issues, can have a harder time at gettting pregnant. Plus, the menstrual cycle is always off. It is not consistant and may not come every 28 days like a person with no thyroid issues.

I am still learning about the thyroid myself and am wanting to know if the thyroid can be regulated without prescription drugs. As of right now, patients will take prescriptive drugs for the rest of their life. If I were you, I'd get tested every 6 months, only because anything can pop up within that length of time. Plus you can catch things in the bud and get rid of any possible sicknesses that may TRY to arise.

I'll be checking into the thyroid more myself.
Good luck with getting pregnant. Just to let you know, I do have a cousin who has issues with her thyroid, and has had a hard time with getting pregnant, BUT she has had a child who is around the age of 8. There is hope. \''/

I wish you the very best!\''/

Many women get thyroid problems around pregnancies. I had post-partum thyroiditis and now it is permanent and I take hormone replacements. Not to say you are pregnant, but your pituitary gland controls your thyroid and it can affect your female hormones. Go see an endocrinologist and get your TSH, Free T3 and Free T4 levels tested. Join an online thyroid group. There are many veteran women that can give more input.

I have had problems with having hypothyroid my whole life since I was 15 and have had very very irregular cycles, going from 19 days in between to as much as 4 months in between which is no fun at all always worrying. Being on the birth control pill was the only sure thing to make my cycle right on.

My heart went out to you when you mentioned possible thyroid issues. I have a "distressed" thyroid. Drugs are not an option for me as they don't solve the deep immune problems involved with thryoid issues. From what I have read, most women probably have thyroid problems because during pregnancies you use twice as much iodine as when you aren't. Iodine is essential in thyroid function. The way a medical doctor tests thyroid function is not accurate. I found out through Dr. Roger Popp in Woodburn. He tests nervous system reactions. Anyway, my periods have always been regular. However thyroid issues affect hormones so it could be affecting your period. Good luck. If you need anything else, feel free to write!

If your period does not start soon, or you don't get a positive test, I would see your OB. Several things could cause problems with your cycle including cysts or fibroids, or as I saw mentioned, a tubal pregnancy which can be very dangerous.

Thyroid disorders can mess with your cycle and fertility, not something to mess with- See an endocrinologist or naturopath asap!

B.,
I have a thyroid disorder. When it was first discovered they didn't put me on meds right away either. I would go months without having a period. It really does mess with EVERYTHING! I had no idea what all the thyroid does until I knew I had a problem. You need to go see an endocrinologist and get the problem taken care of. There are many options! I had mine radiated because the meds they would put me on for it could cross the placenta if I were to get pregnant so therefore, I couldn't get pregnant. I had just gotten married and there was no way we were NOT going to start a family. So, we radiated the thyroid which killed it and now I take a daily medication to control it.
Good luck!

I had the same thing happen and then finally my period returned. I am also very regular so I was a little worried and I had the doctor run a blood test to make sure I wasn't pregnant.
A year later, I had a similar situation but it wasn't until I was 6 weeks late that the pregnancy test finally came up positive and now I have a beautiful 11 month old boy.

Don't worry and good luck!

I had two negative pregnancy tests before I found out that I was pregnant (I think they were both urine tests, but one was at home and the other was at the dr.). I would do a few more pregnancy tests if you don't think it is a thyroid problem.

I have an elevated thyroid issues and I'm on meds. I have had no problems with my cycle. I did not have problems before my thyroid meds either. I do feel better now though, lots more energy! I think you should go see your doctor.
