3 Year Old Sleeping Interruptions

I was just wondering if any one else is or has had problems with their 3 year old sleeping at night. First off let me say my son has always been a very good sleeper. Even takes a nap during day. In the last 2 weeks he has been getting up throughout the entire night. Waking up for the day at 5 or 5:15. I put him back to bed but he still continues to stay awake. I have cut out his nap during the day thinking that would help him to sleep at night but it hasn't.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I know this is a little early to put in the so what happened section but you all have pointed out some very good things. 1: It could be his allergies, when the weather changed that's when we saw his sleeping pattern change. He is on zyrtec but I didn't think about maybe him having congestion throughout the night. 2: I stop all drinking after 6pm and it's either water or milk because he's still wetting the bed first thing in the morning before he wakes up like he's not getting to the bathroom in time. 3: I never thought about maybe it's because my husband is gone TDY (for work) at least 2 weeks out of the month. He loves to be in bed with me but I don't want to make it a habit for the weeks that my husband is home. These past 5 weeks he's only been home 7 days so maybe that may be the cause too. Thank you all for your suggestions!

Our kids are having a hard time adjusting to the time change. That might be it? Good luck!

Make sure he's not getting any caffeine or too much sugar in the late afternoon/evenings. Also, make sure he's not getting too cold or hot. My daughter did this for a while last year and I was telling a friend and she mentioned maybe she was cold. My daughter would kick off her covers and get cold in the night then cry out for me. So one night I tried putting warmer pajamas on her and even socks on her feet and walah! problem solved. There could be lots of things going on, really. Have you asked him why he is waking up? Just a gentle, "what's wrong sweetie? are you cold, scared, sick, etc..." Something else is he may just want to be close to you. Maybe he doesn't get enough cuddles from you during the day? I don't know I'm just thinking of ideas so please don't get offended if I'm way of the mark here. I work all day and only have a few hours with my daughter each evening, then those are filled with cooking supper and chores, but I try to spend time with her and cuddle her, and each night before bed we cuddle together about 30 minutes before she goes to sleep. If you've tried lots of things I suggest you call his pediatrician. I don't particulary think it's a good idea to have him skip out on a nap. Most kids still need a nap through age 5.

If you've cut out his naps, did you also move his bedtime up? Sometimes kids will sleep very restlessly if they go to bed after they've hit the point of no return (when they're really tired and cranky). Maybe getting him to bed before he's reached the over-tired stage would work. Also, making sure he doesn't have any sugar or caffeine several hours before bed will help, along with some type of carb bedtime snack. Good luck and hang in there. Remember, kids are always changing, so this too will pass. :)

I had the same thing with my 20-month-old. He used to be such a good sleeper, now he wakes up a lot in the middle of the night. I took him to the doctor, and found out he had sleep apnea due to seasonal allergies. He would get so congested it would cause him to stop breathing in his sleep, which would wake him up. Think about when your son's sleeping problem started-was there a drastic change in the weather? For a good indication if this is the problem, listen throughout the day for coughs and sniffles or wheezing while he breathes. Take him to the doctor and see if there is anything that can help him if this is the case (my son uses children's Mucinex). DON'T give him any congestion meds until you and your doctor determine if this is the cause.
