3.5 Yr Old with Strange Roller Coaster Fever

Hi Moms,

My 3.5 yr old started running a fever a few weeks ago with a cough, runny nose and it seemingly ran its course in about a week. The pediatrician said most likely it was the flu. Unfortunately, a week later, my son was running a fever of 102.5 again but this fever is wildly strange, he will run a fever for 4-5 days then the fever will disappear or break then at night he will have cold sweats and his body temperature will dip to 95.8 then spike a fever again. His pediatrician ran a strep culture and bloodwork. The strep was negative and the bloodwork indicated a viral infection but I've never heard of such a thing and now I'm scared that it could be something more serious. He was complaining about being tired for about a month before he got sick but blood tests revealed his iron levels and panel were normal. Has anyone else had experience with something like this? Any advice would be appreciated since we're heading back to the pediatrician's today.

What can I do next?

This is how my younger daughter was with her body temp falling way below normal, back to fever again, etc. etc. She was checked for mono several times (all negative). They found her white cell count "normal" when she was obviously sick, BUT....They did find, when this craziness was not going on, she had neutropenia -- low white cell count. That would mean she had a compromised immune system. But why? Good question. We knew she had allergies, but that's all.

Fast forward some years and we found she did have some minor hypothalamic dysfunction. The hypothalamus regulates sleep, body temperature, some hormones, affects mood, and more. Again, But WHY?

I cannot say for sure, but going back to the allergies, she does have a problem with foods which the allergist did not catch because he only did the IgE testing. She had intestinal malabsorption from the problems and that was IgA and IgG. She cannot have gluten and dairy.

I cannot say she is completely well now, but she is a lot better.

Did they check for mono? My pedictrian mentioned when they have fatigue and fever like that it could be mono. Nothing they can do but let it run it's course and time can very.

Lyme disease? Mono? Have the ped. keep testing till s/he figures it out. Night sweats are always something worth checking in to.

my son went through something similar. turns out he was allergic to a food that the daycare and I were serving at least once a week.

his symptoms were as follows every two weeks.
- runny nose with 102+ fevers for 3 -4 days ->
that lead to ear infections -> around day 4
the infection would get us a 10 day antibiotic that would break the fever on day 2. he would get better and be at school for a few days and then it would start again.

I started to keep a food/activity journal trying to figure it out. after doing this for a year he started to break out in hives. Hives = allergy.
I took him to the allergist for a food/environmental test. Turns out he was/is allergic to pears. I had been feeding him pears since 6m old. The daycare served pears every other Wed.
