My 3 month old son had it twice too within his first 8 weeks of life. The doc told me that it is very common for it to come back again even after the 10 days of treatment with medication so when she gave me the prescription she gave me 3 refills for it. I treated my son twice and now he is fine. I wouldn't worry - just call and ask if you can get a refill for the meds (my son was on the same med) and it should go away. Good luck - I know it is hard and frustrating.

That happened to me with my son. I had missed cleaning every single toy, bottle, nipple, pacifer, anything he ever played with and that's how he got it again. Do another "extreme" cleaning to get everything sanitized. I brought my little guy back in and had another round of Nystatin for 10 days. After he was done with the medicine, I cleaned the toys again.

Congratulations on your newest little one!

I had a friend whose newborn had thrush and the prescription did not get rid of it completely. She had better luck with Gentian Violet. The baby had a purple mouth from it, but it did the trick!

Thrush is a fungus, a yeast infection in the mouth. It is not uncommon in infants (or senior citizens) and is always present in the body to some degree, but controlled by the "good" bacteria. It usually does not need treatment, but boosting the immune system helps keep it in check. Probiotics should help. Antibiotics CAUSE thrush because it kills the good bacteria along with the bad. Nystatin is an antifungal, and should help.

Oh Thrush! How fun! Both my kids had this multiple times when they were babies. I believe my son had it twice, and my daughter 3-4 times. It is very hard to get rid of and rarely seems to work on the first try in our experience. You should go back to your doc and they will prescribe you more medicine or try a different kind. Also if you are nursing, make sure you ask about medicine to treat your self because otherwise you are passing it back and forth between the two of you. Also if you use bottle and nuks, make sure you are sterilizing them regularly. With my daughter, we did the bottles whenever she used them and we used the nuk for the day and got new ones the next day, and sterilized the ones from the day before. AFter being very strict about all those things it finally went away. Good luck! I do not envy you!

My daughter had it about 3 times before it cleared up she was about 6 months old. The dr painted her mouth 2 different times and then finally the 3rd time they gave her the oral medicine nysatin and that is what took care of it. I would recommend that you ask your dr for that.

Good luck.....it sucks I know!!

Hi K.! I would definitely recommend an INFANT probiotic. You can get them in most health food stores and ONLY get the refrigerated kind. You can even make a thin paste of the probiotic powder and lightly coat the bottle nipple in it to treat it topically. You could reapply it to the nipple several times during a feeding OR you could put it on your finger and let him chew on your finger.

I would do both the powder IN the bottle as well as the topical version. There are very clear directions on the bottle.
I hope you find a solution soon!

My son used to get thrush. We got an infant probiotic powder (available at most health food stores) and added it to his formula with every bottle to help increase the "good" bacteria within him.

Oh, I feel so bad for you. I didn't have this with my son, but a few times with my daughter. Follow Jennifer's advice. I was going to say the same thing. Also, If you are nursing... cut down on your sweets too. I personally have a hard time with sweets and had to deal with this during the holidays (ugh). Her advice of both of you having a prescription is important... along with the sterilizing. It can be a pain in the rear, but so worth not having to go through it again.

Good luck,
~SR

I've had experience with this when my son had it at an early age due to me having to have antibiotics when in labor :( Get Baby Jaro probiotics Powder and Gention Violet liquid. Yes, his mouth will be purple, but with the combination-it'll clear up and his GI tract should be healthier because of it!

K.,
I feel your pain. My daughter had chronic thrush every time I turned around she had thrush it seemed like. We'll she had it 3 times in 2 months. The best medication was gentian violet. You can purchase over the counter. I think I got mine at wal-mart. It's purple and you coat their mouths with it. Be very careful it stains horribly. I usually stripped my daughter's clothes off. It will stain anything she sucks on including breasts. The doctors told us some kids just have more yeast in their bodies. Good luck. Hope this helps.
