4 Year Old Potty Trained W/diaper Rash????

My son has allergies and sensitve skin.
He has gotten some pretty nastey diaper rashes in the past.
He's been potty trained for almost 2 years.
But frequently he complains of his butt itching and begs me to Whipe him (and i don't do more than necessary).
His butt area around his anus gets very red and sometimes there's teeny tiny bit of blood when he whipes... from that skin.
We thought maybe he wasn't doing a clean enough job himself so we do the 'finishing touch'. Now we are considering the desposable whipes but i'm fearful it has to do w/moisture.

last trip to doc said to use triple antibiodic ointment for 10 days 4x a day.
it worked. but then a few days or later it comes back.

i'm thinking it may be our toilet paper but we get charmin.

any ideas? I've used witchhazel on him (as if he had hemmroids but he doesn't), and diaper rash cream and his steroid cream (but you can't do that much)....

??? i feel bad for him and helpless.
doc did mention sometimes you get this thing that doesn't go away but can't remember the name.

The symptoms sound like a food allergy; it would be worth doing some research, in my opinion. www.allergykids.com is a good starting point. Hope this helps. Poor little guy.

Get him some Flushable wet wipes to use when he wipes. He probably is not getting a good wipe w/ the dry toilet paper. Also, coat him with Aqauphor before bed to help with the rash - works wonders. You may need to send him to school w/ a baggie full to use when he has a bowel movement. We did this with my daughter and it worked wonderfully.

I just wanted to make mention of one thing. You mentioned possibly changing to the flushable wipes. I wanted to let you know what happened with those to a friend of mine. They ended up having to cal a plumber out because their line was all backed up. Come to find out it was from those wipes. The plumber explained that even though they say they are flushable they don't break apart like regular toilet paper would. So, I would try to avoid using those so you can avoid having the same thing happen to you.

My son used to get a reaction like this to orange juice. Also Charmin toilet paper has too much perfume in it for us to tolerate. A & D ointment helps heal chafed skin almost overnight.
Another possibility is he may have pinworms. They are a common and very annoying parasite that lives in the intestine & usually come out the anus at night causing itching. He may be scratching and irritating the skin in his sleep. They are tiny white worms you may or may not be able to see. Ask your pharmacist or doctor for pinworm remedy.

My son (not potty trained, he's 23 mos) on occassion gets yeast infections. It looks like a red diaper rash then will crack and bleed a little and sometimes (but not always) gets little white bumps. If he has a rash for more than a day I go ahead and put OTC athlete's foot cream on the rash. It clears the rash right up (usually 24 hours). As long as you use it topically it shouldn't cause any problems for your son and it may just do the trick. The bacteria/yeast grows in warm moist spots. Maybe he's perspiring there, but that's definately a warm area. (Once the rash is cleared up maybe a little corn starch would be good for him) I wouldn't use any of the wipes because they may have some alcohol in them and actually make his rash worse. When we have the issure I use 4x4 gause pads moistened with warm water. Then they are still disposable (much less gross than a wash cloth) but not harsh or drying. Good Luck!

My Daughter has this issue alot at bedtime because she is relaxed and not distracted with other things, i spoke with the dr. about it, she said continue giving her zyrtec at night and make sure you wipe (i use wipes however i always rinse them with wqarm water) really well before bed, i also apply a thin layer of a&d oinment plus she sleeps either with a nightgown or long t-shirt no undies so she gets as much air as possible.
it can be long nights sometimes. She is a fantastic sleeper (12 hours everynight) it's not that she is trying not to go to sleep. the dr. said it would happen more at night again because of distractions.
good luck

I have a couple ideas. Does he have milk allergies? Sometimes milk or dairy allergies can cause diaper rashes better known as acid rashes because they can be so painful. These kinds of rashes usually have to do with allergies to medications like antibiotics but can also be dairy and other foods.
I personally like the idea of using disposable wipes. We have them in the draw next to our toilet for use at any time. The only thing I always suggest is to wipe again with T-paper after wiping with disposable wipe. After i buy the wipes i sometimes add a little witch hazel to the wipes. Make them a little more antiseptic.
As far as the t-paper being a probably I do not think that is the issue unless you use the Charmin with lotion. There is hypo-allergenic tissue if you think it is the problem.
Lastly the Doctor said you triple antibiotic cream. I will make a suggestion that will sound a little crazy but it works in our family when problems like this flare up. Use bag balm instead. bag balm is natural and puts a thin layer of protection on the butt, that will keep moisture out. Farms use this on the tenderest part of the the cow, their bags when they get chapped. I know many Dr. do not look a things in a natural way but I try to. There is one other this you can try and that is using Coconut oil. We use coconut oil in our house for a lot of natural things.
We use it for chapped skin. chapped lips, pre-wash hair conditioner, in our homemade soap, lip balms, etc. and you can even cook with it check out uses for coconut oil on the internet.
Good Luck

May I ask who takes care of him, if anyone other than one of the parents while away at work? I ask this, and cringe at what I am about to say, because I came across something when my 5yr old had a "rash" that is similar to what I'm about to say, yet I sought a more plausible reason.. I found that article was spot on. If your daughter/son has been using the potty and suddenly has a gnarly looking diaper rash PLZ step back and look at their recent behaviors... Any nightmares.. bed wetting.. Sudden complaint of ailments or illness... If so try sitting down with them to color or do an activity they enjoy, and in the most vague but upbeat childlike way, talk to them about the possibility of someone hurting or touching them inappropriately. Your approach is key. Research how to best tackle this convo to be age appropriate yet effective before attempting it. N
My apologies if this has disturbed you. I truly hope it is as simple as a hygiene issue. My daughter's was later found to be whisker burn. The offender was her own Grandpa.

I would suggest using vaseline on the affected area. Try switching toliet paper (softer) and use hypo-allergic detergent. Even though he has beed potty trained it may still be hard for him to wipe properly.

Try a cream for a fungal infection, like Lotrimin (Yes you can get a fungal infection anywhere it is moist, like down there). One of my children had something very much the same, actually at age 5, that came out of the blue and ended with the use of the anti-fungal cream. Of course we had him tested for everything under the sun (including pin worms and allergies), but they stopped short of doing a skin biopsy which would have been the next step. Good Luck with this.

My son gets really soft poop and an itchy butt when he drinks apple juice. He used to ask me to scratch his butt and wipe him all the time. It took me a long time to figure it out, but we finally narrowed it down to the apple juice. Maybe there is something your son is eating or drinking that is causing this. Good luck!

Try a little Vaseline on the area. And change TP. Just like diapers are made of different products, maybe there is something in the Charmin that he is allergic to?

My 3 1/2 year old daughter kind of gets the same thing and I believe its from her diet. When she eats too much sugar and it low on drinking water she will start to complain. So, the next few days I make her eat only healthly foods, plenty of water and I give her Primadophilus(probiotic)(found in yogurt) in her juice in the morning. She's good as new then. The probiotic by Nature's Way is found at Vitamin Shoppe in the frig and it's a powder made for kids. Your son's good to bad ratio of bacteria in his intestines could be off and that's why he complains. The probiotic balances it out. Won't harm him in any way.Worth a try.

put vaseline on at night every night for awhile. Change TP, make sure it's something that isn't dyed. See if you can find a chlorine and dye free one. Pay attention to what he's eating to rule out a food allergy. And have him tested for pin-worms. They are pretty harmless but cause itchy butt.

S. I am pretty sure I kwow what it is, however take him to the dr to make sur it is not strep. sometimes they can get strep jsut like women can get group b strep etc , if not and you mentioned he has some allergies well it is an allergy to a food he is eating. many kids react differently, some get hives, some vomit, some get exzcema, some do not grow, some have damaged Gi tracs , allergies and intolerances are funny things and can cause many problems. My son too had the red ring around the anus an nothing helped it, we took away all foods and started one a t time when he was little to fine the culprit. He was started on Neocate a million dollar medical food formula that no one can be allergic to and we added a food one at a time. he was even scoped to see if his Gi trac (insides were being damaged) and yes he reacted to almost everything but corn, potatoes, cucumbers, honeydew melon and one brand of peanut butter called tree of life. Yes this is all he can eat with out hurting him, he also lives off of the formula, it is even more hypoallergenic than Nutramagin or Alimentum. A dr has to prescribe it. Does he have any blood or mucus in his stool, has the pedatricitan ever just doena fast and painless blood swab for him? you see the results in the office right there under a slide he takes the swab and puts it on and looks under a light? Do you have an allergist that is up to date and does patch testing? besdie the usual RAST, and SPT tests? Have you seen a GI dr to make sure there is not damage inside or malabsorption issues etc? Please feel free to write me with any questions or concerns and I wish you and your child the best. It is painful I know that from my son. I hope you find some answers or that I helped.

I would definitely have him use toddler wipes, and if you're concerned about the moisture, just have him pat dry with toilet paper afterward. Using diaper rash ointment when it's bothering him is a good idea too.

While most may think this is far fetched, has he been tested for either a yeast infection or pinworms? Pinworms are common in children, especially those with allergies and if the antibiotic did not clear it up, then it may be the likely culprit. They don't cause harm, just itching. You can put all the ointments, creams, use unscented toilet paper, however it does not resolve the issue at hand. There is an easy test you can do at home called the "scotch tape test". Some signs of pinworms are: skin sensitivity, sugar cravings, allergies, bed-wetting, disturbed sleep, teeth grinding and more.

I would also consider giving him a tsp of flax oil daily to help heal his intestinal wall as well as a probiotic since he had the antibiotic ointment, he needs to replace the good bacteria into his gut. To read more on probiotics, I've posted some articles from my family health column:

Have you looked into maybe a yeast infection? I'm not sure, but maybe that's causing it. You can try spritzing a mix of Grapefruit Seed Extract and distilled water every time he goes to the bathroom. That's how we would get rid of and prevent our daughter from getting diaper rash. It is a natural antifungal and does not hurt to be sprayed or swallowed...just very sour. You can buy it at fruitful yield and mix it in your own spray bottle.

When I was in third grade my mom changed laundry detergents to a cheaper brand. I ended up with diaper rash at the age of 9 and was completely mortified. I did not have a rash anywhere else. The doctor said that the underwear are worn closer to the skin than the other layers of clothing and that's why my body reacted in that area.

I don't know what detergent you use, but I suggest trying a mild, scent-free detergent to wash all of his underwear and see if it clears up.

Good luck!
