Hi,

My easy eater is all of a sudden refusing her bottle. She just shakes her head from side to side. She has had a small cold for 10 days...but she has been a steady decline of her intake for the past three weeks. She can go hours without even asking for food. She used to take her bottle every three hours on the dot. My ped. told me to wait until she asks, but she never asks. Has this happend to any of you. She is formula fed.

What can I do next?

She must not like the formula. Try something else. Almond milk or raw cow or goat milk are healthier anyway. (from organic local farmers they are safe and million of babies grow up healthy drinking raw milk. The pasteurized milk is the causes of problem for infants and babies.)

The formula is knows to cause serious problems. http://mothering.com/breastfeeding/formula-for-profit

I know you cannot breastfeed, or you would have, but your baby wants something better than formula. If the above solutions are not fitting with your thinking, try other protein based drinks like chicken broth and other home made whole liquified foods.

My son suddenly stopped the bottle when he was at that same age. He'd kind of bite the nipple and then look at me like he didn't know what to do with it. Yes, he was teething. We had also introduced pureed baby food in very small amounts.

It was frustrating because he was partly formula-fed too. What I did was I breastfed him frequently. I also helped him drink from a sippy when my milk ran dry late at night. Eventually I was able to breastfeed him exclusively with some solids. He learned to drink from a sippy at about 7 months.

I don't know if the teething was the reason he quit the bottle. He never had a problem nursing or eating cereal when he was teething.

Have you introduced any solids at all?

H. start looking at formulas without milk in them. Looks like she is refusing food that makes her sick. Get a soy formula and see if that works. If she has teeth give her rice cream (the cereal) in the evening and make it with rice or soy milk.
Soy and rice milk bought in the grocery will not supply the nutritional needs of your daughter or any other baby. But, a formula from soy will do so.
In the morning mash a ripe banana and spoon it to her. She might only require a quarter of a banana to feel full. You want her to experience feeling full so she gets hungry.
If these methods don't work go to a new pediatrician or even a teaching hospital with her. You need an expert opinion.

Bet she's teething too. Try giving her a dose of motrin, and about 45 minutes later try the bottle.

Also, if you're using silicone nipples, try putting them in the freezer for a couple minutes, and making the formula close to room temp instead of warming it up.

Good luck. I'm sure she'll eat again. If you're worried that she's getting dehydrated, do call the doc again.

My first thought was teething also. My son always got a cold before he erupted a cold so she could be teething.

Check her gums and if they look swollen, you know what your dealing with. Try rubbing them with a cold, damp cloth that has been in fridge before offering the bottle. Get some of those teething rings that you can put in the fridge and cool off. Tylenol I believe helps. Rubbing with your finger also helps.

Good news. It only lasts so long.
