7 Yr Old Sick Mulitple Times in a Month

Hello, my son has had bouts of vomiting that last about 6 hrs once a week for the past month. He will be sleepy and moody a day or two before he vomits. He has also had a decreased appetite overall the past 30 days. I took him to urgent care and they said he was "unlucky" and caught the flu many times. I have never heard of this. I have a deep seeded fear of an underlying illness. Has anyone else ever been through a situation like this before? My husband brought up that he thought it might be tapeworm. We go for testing today!

What can I do next?

yes. my son had both strains of flu when he was 2 1/2 back to back. The whole month of Nov 2003 was a nightmare. My niece had the same thing this past January.

As for him getting moody/sick. It sounds like a food allergy. Is there something at school or home that he's consistantly eating around that time?

Take him to a real pediatrician instead of urgent care.

is it happening at the same time every week? My first thought would actually be stress, maybe something big or something as simple as that is the day he has a math test. Might be worth keeping track and asking his teachers about.

We are going through this right now with our 3 year old daughter. She also has a fever that spikes to 102 at the same time.
At our insistance, our Pediatrician ran a series of tests and found D-Diff bacteria in her intestines (usually a result of having multiple rounds of antibiotics) and now we are on a 14 day round of a medicine to get rid of this bacteria. It was a simple stool sample that we collected at home that got us this diagnosis.

It really helped us to document when she was getting sick (what she was eating, any other symptoms, any changes in her environment, mood etc) around the time she would get sick. It helped to see if there was a clear pattern or cause of her illness.

I would also say that you should push form more testing. We also looked at Celiac Disease, and other GI disorders. We saw a pediatric GI specialist as well.

Our daughter may not have the same symptoms as your son and has been sick on and off since August and lost about 6lbs which is a lot for a 32 lb little girl, so please don't be alarmed by our story, (everything is very treatable and usually non intrusive) but if you are feeling like the answer your doctor is giving you is not the right one, go to another doctor or demand a closer look or second opinion.

Doctors aren't always right.

Good luck and I hope he feels better very soon.

Maybe he needs a good immune builder. He needs to replace the electrolytes you loose in vomiting. Please contact me I think I can help. Has he been tested for food allergies? S.

My daughter is a Cyclic vomiter. She has cycles of vomiting of an unknown cause. She goes around a cycle of 3 months. The ped gastro said that they may be linked to abdominal migraines. Get him to a pediatric gastro soon.

Good luck,
S.

Take him to a ped and get a referral for a GI doctor and allergist
We dealt with something similar but not exact. After many tests and this and thats it turned out to be how his body deals with allergies. Especially when the fungus/mold counts are high. He was put on Zyrtec (still scrip back then) as a routine med during seasonal issues then as needed after. He was never very hungry during that time because all that drainage settled in his stomach making him ill. He also gets cranky right before as well.
We learned to watch for 'allergy shiners' as a sign it was about to happen and started with the zyrtec maintainance right away. This helped avoid 2 am cookie tossing of both him and me (blood, guts and bone I can do..puke and poo not so much)
Hope this helped some ~J~

You need to have your son checked out by an immunologist. They have a blood test that check to your antibody levels or how your immune system is working. My daughter has low levels of antibodies and she gets sick often and is tired all the time. We are in the process of seeing if she is a candidate for antibody replacement so she her body has an easier time fighting infections. This can be dangerous so you need to rule this out. Another possibiilty is mono. Either way tell your doctor that he needs to be tested.

I would take him to either your family doctor or pediatrician and have him checked out just to be on the safe side. Hope he is feeling better soon!

Hi N.,

I've never personally experienced anything like this with my kids, but your explaination of a clear pattern before the bout of vomiting definitely concerns me. Has he any congestion, maybe from allergies (food or hay fever allergies)? Sometimes the mucus from that will make kids throw up. But that still wouldnt explain the pattern. I have heard of something called Cyclic Vomiting, it starts with children usually between the ages of 5 and 7, and there is a clear pattern with their vomiting. Does he complain of any headaches? Could be migraine related. Here is a good link:

http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/cvs/

I hope that helps you piece together his symptoms, be sure and take him to a GI specialist if you are truly concerned, which it seems you are, make a diary of the symptom pattern and times and bring it with you to your appointment, if you have one of those mom-feelings you have to be a very strong advocate for your kids, sometimes no one will listen to you and have to keep going until you find someone who will. Good Luck

Sounds like stress, N.. What is he doing the day before he starts to vomit? Alot of time, its investigative work on your part that determines what is going on. If your son doesn't want to talk about it, I would talk with his teachers & just watch from a distance without his knowledge of what he does if you can. He could be bullied by a classmate. I went through something similar as a young teen. Mine was the math teacher that we had; he would intimidate us with a long ruler by hitting it on our desks when we were trying to take notes during class & no one knew when they would get hit! So it could be something similar with you boy. Question your son, then the teachers & just wait & watch. The truth about the it will come out!
