My 8 month old son is now pulling himself up to stand in his crib. We have the mattress low enough that he cannot get out, but he hasn't figured out how to sit back down. So, he falls back into his crib and hits his head on the back headboard (we have one of those convertible cribs). We do not have a bumper in there, as I know they are no longer recommended. Any suggestions? Can he hurt himself? Should I lower the crib even more so he can't reach the top of the rails to stand or will he try even harder to stand holding the slats and fall more? Will he figure out how to sit back down eventually? Thanks!
Have you looked into a crib tent. We got one for our daughter a few months ago. We have the one that goes on top and covers the sides. My daughter is now 12 1/2 months old and can stand up in it.
With the sides, you can reach the side bar of the crib, which may prevent him from standing up until he can get up and down with ease.
I got mine used on Craigslist. It was much cheaper than brand new....

it sound like ur son is getting active and time to let him explore on the floor instead of being in crib even if u r doing house work, u can put gates in doorways and or put him in the play pen with a few toys to keep himself busy. at this age, they like to move around to discover that they can climb, run, etc. my son was like that, he was more happy playing on the floor, the more he plays, he sleeps better and more happy. just check on him periodly when u are doing something nearby to make sure he don't choke on things and babyproof the room he would be in. jennfer r.
My son was 8 months old and would somehow flip himself out of the crib. After he did that twice, I put the mattress on the floor and it was tough times with bedtime, but at that time it was the only safe way. Good luck! R. H.
I would put the mattress all the way down to avoid him trying to climb out. That might make it more difficult for him to get to a stand. During the day when he is up, I would work with him being at a stand, then getting to a sit. At that age, they have no concept of how far down it is if they let go and fall, so they tend to be scared to let go, thinking they may have a long way to fall. He will get the hang of it and then will be able to do it on his own. I can't imagine he could fall hard enough to actually injure himself, but might bump his head and cry. Good luck.

Even tho typical bumpers aren't recommended due to SIDS there is 1 beathable bumper that we've used for both kids. It works well. It's not too thick, but gives just a little protection. It may help a little. It may take a little time but pretty soon he'll figure out how to sit down. i doubt he could seriously hurt himself by that small fall back, but regardless you don't want him hitting his head. Maybe try turing the crib so that he gets up on a differnt side. (if he's always going to the side closest to the door make on of the shorter sides w/ more room to fall closest to the door).
I hate it when they figure out how to stand up, what a pain! My kids would just stand there and cry until I laid them back down, then they would stand right up again. I finally learned to just let them figure it out, and we got through this stage quicker that way.
He probably will not seriously hurt himself, lower the mattress for sure though. And if he is already falling back, you are half way there, he will figure out how to sit back down soon. Hang in there and just keep your eye on him while he is playing in bed until he falls asleep to make sure he doesn't hit his head too hard.
