8 Mo Won't Eat Veggies

My 8mo son has suddenly quit eating veggies. He has been doing very well, eating 2 meals a day (fruit for breakfast & veggie for supper) with bottles in between, but this week he has decided to eat only the fruit. He eats breakfast real well, but when it comes to the veggies at supper, he simply refuses to eat. Is this a natural phase for this age or could there be something else going on?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your input, but we are still fighting meal time every day. I've tried mixing the fruit and veggies, but he still won't eat them. I've tried alternating the fruit and veggies on the spoon, but once he eats the veggie he gets so mad that he won't open his mouth for anything else. I tried the carrots/apples/ mango mix, but he quit eating it about half way in. I've also tried the meat/veggie/fruit mixes and he won't eat that either. I am really at my wits end. I'm wondering if I should start the gerber graduates meals since he seems to enjoy the puffs and wheels.

Do you give him jarred baby food? If that's the case, maybe he wants more textured food. I've always just made my son's food, and a couple of times I tried to give him the jarred food (because we were on a trip or something) and he refused to eat it. If your son has any teeth at all, he may be more willing to eat if you try varying the textures of the veggies. Something else I discovered with my son (and I know all kids are different, but) was that if I make "cakes" out of anything, he'll eat it. "Cakes" being the term I use for potato pancakes, salmon patties, veggie fritters, etc. I just spray no-stick spray in the pan, form a patty with whatever I've mixed together plus an egg, and pan fry it. He eats it every time.

Wouldn't you like sweet over bland? Look closely at your selection of veggies and fruits. I had to make my own to make the veggies palatable

start giving him the veggies you eat off the table at 8 months old he should be able to eat reg green beans, sweet peas that are just fork mushed so he don't choke on them, corn should probably still be out of a jar since it is harder to chew and can cause a choke hazard, our veggies taste alot better than theirs do. my ped told me to try that when my kids went thru that stage and it worked wonders, it will save money and he may wind up loving his veggies again. i really wouldn't worry too much since at this age he's still getting most of his nourishment from his formula or breast milk and at this point is just learning to eat. make sure he's getting plenty of fluids and his daily vitamins, if he still doesn't start eating veggies by 1 they have pediasure which will suppliment his diet in case. i would really talk to your ped. about it and get his imput but thats what mine told me.

my son did the same thing. He ate all the meals throughout the day so well, but by the time we got to dinner he was very very picky and ate little. Yes, it is a phase and I wouldn't worry too much about it. Kids don't let themselves starve. So if you're seeing regular diapers and weight gain, I wouldn't really do much about it. There were two things though that I noticed when we went through this and they were:
1. if I fed him the same veggie every night for a week, he refused it the next week. He simply wants variety like we do.
2. I was attempting to have him eat dinner with us, so that dinner was a family event, but 6:30 (which is what time it was by the time we were all home and dinner was ready) was just too late for him. So now I feed him between 5 - 5:30 and he's been finishing his plate.

Maybe consider those things, but in general I don't think it's something to be alarmed about, especially if he's still on formula or breast milk.

J.,
When my son was that age he did the same thing,. Just all of the sudden he didnt like the veggies. What i did was added some applesauce or another fruit to it and it gave it a sweetness to where they liked the veggies and ate them all. Hope that helps

Hi J.!
My daughter is 8m.o. also. We haven't had any problems with her not eating veggies...but one thing I used to do with my son(now 5) was mix veggies with fruit. It gives it a little sweetness, but he's still getting his veggies. I do it for my daughter also, and she gobbles it all down. =) I mix it 2 parts veggie to 1 part fruit, or sometimes 1/2 and 1/2. Then you can you can gradually reduce the amount of fruit. I hope this helps!

My son Dylan, who is 9months old now, didn't like veggies either. I then found Gerber and Beechnut have jars, stage 2, carrots, apples, mango. Sweet Potato & Chicken or Turkey. Ham,Pineapple,Rice and other varieties. I hope that this helps.
Dylan loves them!

I learned that my son's (both of them) would eat veggies early in the day but not later in the day. Maybe they were so hungry they would eat anything I offered in the morning? Worth a try. Perhaps they get that sweet taste early in the day and then they get a craving for more sweet?

It's completely noraml... I have to mix the veggies in with my boys food or they won't eat them at all. He is probably more interested in the fruit because it has more flavor than the veggies... it's sweeter. I look at it this way as long as he is eating and it's healthy he's fine. Good Luck! =)
