8 Month Old Keeps Waking up in Crib

My 8 month old used to sleep next to me in his bassinet and would wake up once or twice at night but go back to sleep very easily. Now that he is in his crib he will sleep the first three hours or so and then start waking up every hour. It isn't a matter or feeding or a wet diaper, he just seems to feel lost in his crib. I have tried a nightlight, no nightlight, white noise etc. and nothing works. By the third or fourth wake-up I usually give up and buckle him into his car seat where he sleeps like an angel. He just wants to feel snug.

He pulls up, crawls and rolls so I can't swaddle him and I can't put bumpers or rolled blankets in his crib since that would be unsafe... the sleep positioner I had in his bassinet he can pull right up and play with, so that doesn;t work. So I need to find a way to make his crib 'smaller' that is safe. Any thoughts?

He sleeps in his own room but I am at the point that I am thinking of having him sleep in the the pack and play (with the matress at the bottom) next to my bed....
(Also, my husband and I can't handle the 'crying it out' part, although I do let him cry for 1-2 minutes and sometimes he does go back to sleep, but if he really gets going I do want to pick him up....

HELP!

What can I do next?

This is tough but I think you might need to consider trying the "crying it out thing" for just a couple of nights. Believe me I know it's difficult. But in my experience with my little one 2 nights is all it ever takes whenever he develops some new sleep problem. I look at the clock when he starts and give him 15 minutes. That's my limit and usually he's back to sleep in 10. Good luck. I'm also wondering if you have tried putting him in a sleep sack? My son is 16 months old and still loves his.

Well it sounds like he really likes to be snuggled. I had a friend who had a baby like that so she made him a special blanket. She made it with pinto beans in it (like people do when they make those homemade heating bags) So the blanket was really heavy. He felt really snug and safe and slept great from then on. So you could give that a try.

I agree, maybe try a sleep sack, putting him on one side of the crib and maybe give him a lovey if he doesn't already have one. Babies really need something to attach to, I believe.

It does sound like he just needs to get used to the crib and being away from Mom and Dad. The pack and play isnt that much smaller, but if he'll sleep in it try it in his room rather than next to you. Lastly, do whatever it takes to get some sleep for you all, even if that does ultimatley mean the P&P is in your room for now.

A friend of mine suggested putting long skinny semi flat pillows in the crib and covering them with a stretchy crib sheet (such as t-shirt material). This creates a nest of sorts and works great if you need to incline your baby's mattress for colds and such.
Also, you can take a piece of your clothing that you recently wore and put it in his crib. The smell of you will help to comfort him. My little guy slept with my cotton nursing pad for the longest time. :) He would brush it against his face when he was going to sleep.

Whatever gets everyone the most sleep is the right answer. Don't worry about what "should" be done, or how everyone else does it. Babies are individuals, and there is no one-size-fits-all "right" answer.

Try letting him sleep in the Pack 'n Play, but in his own room. It's smaller than a regular crib, but you're not totally destroying the "sleep on your own" habit. No reason to bring him back into your room, just set the smaller crib up in his room and see how he does. Good luck!

Have you tried just dressing him in warm cuddly outfits that won't make him overheat.

Maybe put him in a sleep sack? Try looking on Amazon... they have it.
They have them for older babies too.

It is common... that some babies have a harder time in a crib.. because it is so "open" and not like a cocoon.
My Pediatrician said, to try and place the baby on one end of the crib... instead of in the middle.

Also, he's probably just not used to the crib... yet.
Keep trying... its an adjustment for baby.
