Is this pretty normal? She doesn't get up into a sitting position by herself either, though she can sit well when put in the position.

What can I do next?

My son didn't sit on his own til he was 10 months old. Don't worry, she's fine. He didn't crawl til around then too. Then he did it all at once.

As long as she can sit well when put into position, I wouldn't worry. All babies develop differently and crawling is not even a real gage of babies development. Some babies never do it! I find the book, What to Expect the First Year, really helpful in calming my developmental worries. Also ask your doctor if you want peace of mind. I am sure they will tell you all is fine. Enjoy this time when you can just pick her up and snuggle her because once they start going they never seem to stop and they are hard to catch! :)

Hi R.

My daughter is 10 mo old. She sits very well when placed in sitting position and plays with her toys (blocks are her favorite). She does not crawl and does not pull herself up into sitting position at all. At my 9 mo appt last month, my pediatrician said that her gross motor skills were developmentally behind but her fine motor skills were extremely advanced. She suggested a home study with a development specialist. I actually thought that she was being a little too cautious (though I appreciate that) and we agreed to wait until her 1 year appt to see how her development progresses. I know that my husband was a "late walker." He basically "rolled" not even traditional crawl until he was almost 2 years old. His mom did take him to several specialists and they found nothing wrong. When he was ready, he started walking. I think because I knew his history, it has made me a little less anxious and I do believe she will do this at her own pace. From last months visit, I do actually see more development. When she falls back from her sitting position, she actually tries to use her ab muscles to get upright again and not her arms or a roll over. I think she's going to skip crawling and just start walking when she's ready.
It's definately something you want to talk about with your ped...just to make sure your baby is developing in all other areas. But I don't think you have anything to worry about if she's doing everything but pulling up or crawling.
Best of Luck
Ali

My daughter is 8.5 months old as well and she is not crawling. She is on all fours and rocks but she doesnt put herself in the sitting position and is also very sturdy when sitting. From what everyone tells me, all babies work at their own pace. Some babies don't even crawl, they go right to walking. My doctor said that one reason for this is because we put babies to sleep on their backs nowadays so they spend a lot of their free time on their backs and not on their stomachs - that is why tummy time is so important when they are awake so they can stregnthen their muscles. I am interested to hear what other moms have to say as well.

Like everyone said, babies develop at their own rate, you baby girl is probably just doing things her way! I would double check to make sure that she is and has been reaching other milestones around the generally expected times (like smiling, laughing, reaching, babbling, etc).

If everything else is on track, you can be sure this is nothing to worry about! 8.5 months, as you've seen from other moms, isn't even all that late, and some babies never crawl at all. And, as always just to be safe, mention it at the next pedi visit. But don't worry yourself to death about it... this time is too precious and you are doing a great job! Enjoy!

Good morning! My boys didnt start "crawling" until 10-11 months. And they didnt start walking until they were each around 18 months. And they still got into everything! All kids develop at a different rate. As long as your pediatrician isnt concerned just roll with it. My boys are now 6 and 3 and I cant stop them from running around!

Hi R.,

Neither one of my kids crawled before 10 mos, and my second was almost a year old before he crawled. They're both normal healthy kids (ages 4 yrs and 18 mos) with no physical issues, but if you're still concerned you should check with your pediatrician.

Cheers,
Jenn

I wouldn't worry. When I brought my son for his 9 month checkup he wasn't crawling either. He would do the army comando and pull himself around but wasn't crawling. He was starting to pull himself up into a stand position and would inch along furniture. He did crawl a week after his 9 month checkup and started taking steps soon after. Some babies just kind of skip crawling. I know it is easy to compare but try not to. Good luck!

Hi R.,
I am a mother of a 4 year old boy and a 8 month old boy soon to be 9 months next week. My infant does not crawl yet either, my oldest crawled at 10 months. They are all on their own schedule I am told and when they are ready they will do it or skip right to walking. We were just with a friend of mine and her children one week ago and her 8 month old is already pulling himself up to standing and crawling all over the place! My son also sits very well and is leaning forward more like he wants to go places but has not yet. My son is just content to be in one spot and for now it is good because I know where he is at all times!
Good luck, I hope this helped a little.

some kids never crawl.. don't worry.. if you think there's is something to worry about talk to your ped about it to have her evaluated.. my son never crawled like most babies, he kind of skipped over his leg while dragging the other one.. every kid is different, they do their own things.. she may just stand up one day and run..

It's probably fine, but what does your pediatrician say?

If this is a concern to you ask your pedi about your daughter maybe having Low Muscle Tone? esp. because of the not sitting up ..no one has really mentioned that. You can have Early Intervention come and do an evaluation (it is free and they come to your home) to see if see is indeed in need to help or physical Therapy. My son was born 6 weeks early and did not sit up until 11 months.

Low muscle tone seems to be an inherited trait. Go with how you feel..talk to your Doctor..

I wouldn't worry yet. All babies develop differently. My youngest one wasn't crawling or sitting up by himself at 8.5 months. Now at just over nine months I can get in to stay in one place long enough to change a darn diaper, though he still doesn't sit up very well alone. Alot can change in a short amount of time. Enjoy it while you can because soon you'll need track shoes to keep up.

My son didn't crawl or sit up until the very last minute but then walked at 11.5 months. Maybe yours just isn't going to crawl a whole lot. I know it's stressful sometimes especially when we tend to compare, even though we don't mean to. Hang in there and if you're still worried talk to your doctor at the next appointment. Good luck

Hi R., I would not worry about it, though I would just mention to the pedo when you go. But this is normal, and my neice did not crawl untill almost 10 mos, and even then she crawled on her but not all fours untill almost a yr. She also didn't walk untill 14 mos, nor did my own little one. However my daughter was crawling at 6mos. My whole point is, this does NOT matter. Every baby is different, and they will do things when they are ready. It does not mean anything if one baby does something before another. It does not mean they will be smarter or anything. My pedo always told me that if they are not reaching one or two milestones then it is completely normal. It is only time to worry if they are not reaching any. So this is all normal! Also some babies never crawl, they go right to walking.

My daughter didn't crawl until 11.5 months. I wouldn't worry yet. She crawls like a speed demon now, at 15 months. Not walking yet though, even though she can stand up on her own without holding onto anything. Your daughter will get there. Some babies just take longer than others. Talk with her pediatrician, though.
