9 Month Old Grinding Teeth

My nine month old son has three bottom teeth and is working hard on popping his four top teeth through. We think he has at least one through, because he is grinding his teeth. Is this just him experimenting? Will is go away? Any tips on getting him to stop (the sound is actually kind of creepy!)?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the reassurance! He uses a pacifier, so we'll try that occasionally when the noise is irritating. It's reassuring to know that other kids have done this too.

My son did this for a short time too when his top teeth came in. I put my finger in his mouth to stop it and said "no, no" when he did it. I couldn't stand the sound. It only lasted a few weeks.

I don't have any advice on how to get him to stop, but can sympathize. My son is now 8 and has been doing it for a long time. I will be anxious to hear what others say to see if there is a way to make it stop. It is an awful awful noise!!!

does he use a pacifier?

i have heard that an unresolved need turns up as an undesireable habit. sucking is a need for all babies, and if left unresolved, it will turn up elsewhere.

however, i had a baby in my day care who did this for a while, and he just stopped one day. so its probably not going to be a huge problem... just check with your doctor at the appointments to make sure the teeth arent grinding down.

My son did this around 8 months. I hated the noise, and so did everyone who heard it. His DR said he is just learning how to make new sounds with his body and it doesn't mean anything more at this point. It lasted for about a month, off and on, and now he has stopped!

Pretty normal but sure can be irritating. They love making new sounds with their mouths, don't they! I doubt it will last long.

My daughter is now 11 months old, and she did the same thing at around 9 months when her first top teeth came in. It was an irritating noise, but was just a phase and she stopped doing it after a few weeks.

My girls have done this, too. I asked the dentist because my husband still grinds his teeth. The dentist said many kids go through a stage where they grind, and at this age it should not be of concern. It gets to be more of a concern when they get permanent teeth. It is a horrible noise, but both my daughters have now stopped doing it (ages 2 and 3 1/2)

My son did this too around the same age, it only lasted a few months (if that). I think it was the newness of getting his teeth and liking that he could make that noise all by himself. I would always give him a nuk to chew on cause I couldn't stand the noise, but he would just take the nuk out and do it. Thank god it went away, its like fingers on a chalk board.
