My 9 month old daughter is suddenly a picky eater. She loves her crackers and fruits, but it is a struggle to get her to eat more veggies and meats. Or she will eat, but only a few bites. She doesn't eat large amounts but sometimes grazes all day. I guess that is better than nothing. Sometimes its even hard to get her to drink her formula. Her doctor said to concentrate it a little which makes me feel better but I dont think its enough. Anything new she tastes then refuses.... She poops and pees ok and her energy is very high, so am I just being paranoid... oh and she is teething too. Any suggestions?????? advice????

Just keep in mind that they may have to try something 10 to 15 times before they like it. Just keep trying and offering it. Don't write foods off after trying a couple of times. My dd is a great eater, now 23 months old, and that is what we did. Try different prep methods as well. If she likes eggs you can saute some spinach and then make a scrambled egg with it. (not sure if she can have eggs yet) That is how we get my dd to eat spinach and she loves it. You can "sneak" veggies into foods as well.

do NOT "concentrate" her Formula! I can't believe your Pediatrician said to do that. If you do NOT add in the proper amount of water with the formula powder or add MORE powder than water... it will be TOO concentrated... and it will overload a baby's kidneys! Which is NOT good. The instructions on a Formula can is very specific... you need to follow that.
If anything, your Pediatrician can/should prescribe "polyvitamins" with iron, for your baby.

ALSO, at this age, a "baby" is NOT going to eat like an adult...at this age, they are merely getting used to "solids" and it will take time to eat like us.
Also, MANY kids/babies only "graze" and eat in bits. My son is like that AND he is a very PICKY eater. So what. No biggie. He is HEALTHY AND very well developed for his age... his "picky" eating has NOT affected him/his health/his development/his anything. AND he rarely gets sick, AND I give him vitamins.

I think, your baby is not ready to be eating in large amounts, nor eating like a 2 year old. She is only 9 months old... and at this age Breastmilk/Formula should be a baby's PRIMARY source of nutrition... NOT solids, and NOT other liquids. This, is according to my Pediatrician.

A "serving size" for a "baby"...is ONLY in terms of teaspoons, or tablespoons at the most.

She will eat more things in time. She is only 9 months old... their "taste buds" are not even fully developed and they don't "taste" like and adult... they go by texture too.

Bear in mind, that food phases will come and go ALL throughout childhood. Your baby is normal. Each baby/child....has food "preferences", JUST LIKE any adult.
Its okay.

If a baby is teething, the naturally, they will have a hard time eating... but its no biggie. They will not starve. Just make sure she remains hydrated.

All the best,
Susan

My daughter was picky at this stage. Then at 18 month she stared eating lots of variety and trying most anything. I hear it changes back to picky at three or four. These things ebb and flow. However, one thing I did at around a year-14 months is I stopped giving her so many snacks as a regular part of her day. What i found is she so enjoyed her gold fish, graham crackers, and other such barely nutritious foods I couldn't get healthy foods down her. With three meals and three milk bottles, she was more than fine. If I needed to I just fed her early instead of letting her snack all the time. This way she was good and hungry and ate her real food including vegetables! In fact, on days that I don't let her snack she'll gobble up her vegetables faster than I can feed her if I serve them first. This transition to larger meals made all the difference. She still has days when she grazes, and its hard if not impossible to get any veg. down her on those days.

Hi V.,

I also have a 10 month old daughter who is a picky eater. I'm making my own baby food (check out Super Baby Food). Lately she is eating what I make her. I mix fruits and vegetables together i.e. sweet potatoes and pears (puree), and then I added butter to zucchini (puree) and also added organic brown rice cereal. It is a constant experiment...but you might want to give them a shot. Good luck! L.

Good news, at this age babies mainly do what their bodies tell them to.
They don't think about "liking" or wanting to eat, they just eat.
Just keep giving her the small bites-if her body needs more protein, she'll eat more protein. Offer her a regular variety and she'll chose what makes her the most happy.
Get used to time frames where she'll only eat one thing for days at a time-most babies do (toddlers are the worst at this).

As long as she's busy and happy, you've got a healthy little girl who's just doing what babies do.
Good Luck
