A Day off and Nothing to Do

I have been a mom with a full time job for 3 years now. I'm also a part time student so any time I have off I spend with my kids as much as possible but I've been doing this for the last 3 years and I'm getting to the point where I just need a "me" day. Love my kids and my husband helps out as much as possible but I really have no time for myself. And the pitiful thing about this is that I have forgotten how to really have a "me" day. I haven't really taken one since before my first daughter was born. This coming Tuesday I am taking a me day. Usually my days off of work are filled with studying, or Doctor appointments and always get interrupted with calls from work but my school semester ends Monday, the kids are going to Day Care on Tuesday and I'm shutting my phone off. What do all the other moms out there do on their "me" days? I'm at a loss. I have many interests but don't know what is out there this time of year and I could find enjoyment in anything I do. Was just wondering what all the other insightful moms out there have come up with.

What can I do next?

I would go get a pedi/mani then go the Barnes and Noble fine a great book and enjoy the rest of the day and if it is nice fine a park or place to go. Eat lunch in piece or shop but have some fun. Get a massage. G. W

Hi, when I have my "me" day I like to have a massage or a mani/pedi. Once in awhile I'll have the ultimate "me" day and schedule a spa day complete with lunch, the ultimate pampering day! Some day spas have really nice packages with/without lunch. Whatever you decide have FUN and DON'T feel guilty moms need a little TLC once in awhile! ;)

I craft!

I enjoy sending hand-made cards and I have lots of pictures to scrapbook. My latest adventure is taking my pictures and turning them into digital works of art.

I know an amazing massage therapist named Brandi Fosdick. Phone contact is ###-###-####. I have used her many times. She is certified, can do trigger-point therapy, myofacial therapy, and good basic massage, as light or heavy as you prefer it. Her new location is just off Camp Bowie, but you'll have to ask. I haven't been to the new address, just the one at Curzon Corners near the Sunflower Shoppe.
I would suggest a massage, a session at one of the spas, (the European Spa on the west side, for example), if money is not difficult, followed by lunch, and a movie of your choice, all with a good friend, for girl talk and camraderie.

I've never had a whole day ... when I have a few hours I like to go buy a magazine I never would normally buy and go out to eat at somewhere like Pei Wei. I just love being able to eat and read in peace. If I had a whole day I think I would read a book in bed. Have a great day!

You've gotten a lot of great advice -- if you're in or near Fort Worth, I can recommend what would be a great "me" day for me.

Visit the new Fort Worth Museum of Science and History (it's not just for kids, but you may decide you'd like to take them another day). There are also other museums right there -- the Modern, the Kimbell, the Carter. All are great places to relax so you can just pick what you're interested in. The Modern and Kimbell both have really good lunch places.

If you like to cook (or eat) then Central Market on Hulen is nearby and it's fun to spend some time checking things out and sampling whatever they are sharing that day. Then pick out something new to take home and try. It's so hard to ever enjoy a grocery store with young kids the same way you can by yourself! There are a couple of Half-Price Books locations in Ft. Worth too if you have time to work that in.

Whatever you do, enjoy! It will be great, just because your phone is off. :)

Lucky you! (To have a me day to plan for, not that you haven't had one in three years!)

If I were having a me day, I'd sleep late (if possible), then start off with a mani/pedi. After that I would head to the movies. I love going to the movies and don't get to do it much anymore, so I'd probably try to squeeze in two! :-) I would also try to do lunch with a friend at someplace I don't get to go very often because my husband doesn't like it/it's not kid friendly/it takes too long normally, etc.

Enjoy your free day!

Hi A.,

On my days to myself, I always like to do things that are just impossible with my kids around. Movies is usually high on the list. Just by myself. 2 hours alone! With no one to talk to! "The Blind Side" is a great movie.

I also like to browse through some of my favorite stores, even if I'm not spending any money. I do a lot of crafts, so having tie to browse through JoAnn or Hobby Lobby is a treat. I also spent a me day once trying on a lot of jeans at Macy's. I didn't buy any, but I figured out which brand fit me well and then went back when I had money in the budget and knew which ones to get!

Whatever you do, enjoy. Know that taking care of yourself is the best gift you can give to your husband and children.

Peace,
M.

HI A.,
Good for you!

Whatever you do, I would recommend "exercising" as that always makes me feel better. Go for a brisk walk for an hour...enjoying God's beauty while you go!

Then, I would set up a lunch with one of my best girlfriends, and solve the world's problems together!

Whatever you do, I wish you a fabulous day!

My me days are few and far between. I home school my kids and I write suspense and paranormal books. I either have a paper to grade, places to go, books to edit or a new book to write. So much it make my head spin.

To get a me day I have to travel. I usually go for a very long walk. In San Francisco when I had a me day at a writers conference I walked the city. I think I logged 15 miles on my pedometer that day. I'll usually go see things I've always wanted to see. I'm going to New Orleans for a conference in March. For the me stuff which also ties into my writing I'm going to take the Vampire tour and the Cemetery tour. Not your typical me day stuff, but something I couldn't do with my kids.

My suggestion, find something you love that you can't do with your kids and do it. The Dallas Museum of Arts is beautiful, but only if it's your thing. If you love movies go to the theater and take one in early in the morning then go have a nice lunch at a place your kids would hate that you love. If you are closer to Ft. Worth there are museums there too. Have fun on your me day.

Hi A.,
Congrats on having a day to yourself! We need those every now and then. I love going downtown to the square in McKinney. There are so many cute shops, and I find the people to be very friendly. Some of my favorite shops are Sharla's, The Little Red Hen, & The Cup Filler. There are lots more, but these are some of the places where the owners have welcomed me to their store, and visited for awhile. There are lots of wonderful places to have lunch also - Sauce on the Square, The Pantry, Spoon's, Mama Emilia's, & Rick's Chophouse are all places we've eaten in the past that left us saying "We'll be back!". If you want to take a special treat home to the family then stop in at The Mom & Pop Corn Company, or The Cake Stand (they sell cake by the slice that's big enough to feed your husband and a couple of kidlets).
I hope that you thoroughly enjoy whatever you end up doing on your "me day".
Smiles,
C.

Well what do you like to do?
I'd go get a pedicure, a massage, a day of pampering!
If that is not in the budget, go to the movies, go to a museum, have lunch with a girl friend you seldom get to see, especially one with no kids, you know how hard it is to get together with them!

Congratulations on deciding to really focus on you! Things to do: catch up on a good cheesy kind of novel (if that's your thing), go out to lunch, play tennis or go bowling with a friend; go to a movie by yourself (I love this option); nap as much as you want; spa day; check out a store you've been meaning to check out for a while; visit a museum; go to Six Flags (don't know if its still open). Since having a child, going to school and returning to work myself, I've enjoyed getting to do these things again when I'm lucky enough to have a day off. The most important thing is to enjoy yourself and make the most of it. Good luck!

Hi A.,
Not sure what part of town you live in, but in Frisco, there is a new massage place that opened called Massage Green. For first timers, they offer a 1 hour massage for 29.99. My sister and went during the Thanksgiving weekend, it was awesome! Then I would head to Barnes and noble, read all the trash magazines and have a coffee. Enjoy.

First thing to do on the "me" day is to set up the date of your next "me" day so that you don't feel like this is your only chance to do a "me" day!

Ideas:
visit a park and meditate
visit the art museum
see a chick flick
Have a massage, pedicure, facial......or all three!
shop til you drop
check into a motel, read and take a hot bath

Enjoy!

Don't underestimate how good doing nothing can be. Pedicures and massages are nice, but sometimes I love just having the house to myself. I watch what I want, wear what I want, eat what I want, etc.

" Me time" is so vital. You need it. ? Kudos to you for takng the time!!

What you do with it is how you envision your "me time".

As for myself.... I board a flight to South Beach in Miami for myself. Other times.. If time is not permitted for me to be gone 3 days +, book a hotel close by, Christmas shop, do the pedi/mani and massage, get your hair done for the holidays.

If you are a homey type, get some good books to read, hot baths, wine, and enjoy your "me time"!

However you do it.... Just enjoy it and relax. Take the time to reflect and be proud of yourself.

You are a good mom for realizing the importance of " me time".
