Hi Ladies,
I have had the Mirenia IUD (5 year) for over 3 years now. I have had absolutely no complications from it at all...in fact I love it because I do not have my period. This past Saturday, however, I started spotting and I have since been having this uncomfortable sharp shooting pain on my left side that comes and goes. Other than the 1st day the spotting is so minimial that it is only there after I go to the restroom and wipe. Could this be a symptom of the IUD...I have heard some people have problems with them? Also, I have heard it can dislodge itself. I did put a call into my Dr. but they have yet to call me back so wanted to see if anyone has experienced anything like this.

Well I went into see my Dr. on Thursday and by then of course the spotting and pain had stopped. My IUD is just fine and he said the likelihood of that being the issue after 3 years was unlikely. He is sending me to have an ultrasound on Monday just to rule out anything major but he thinks it may just be an ovarian cyst that popped. It is now Saturday and I still have no pain or spotting so I think I am fine. Thanks for all your advice.

I had lots of issues with my IUD. But I knew it wasn't working for me by about 8 months. I was getting sharp shooting pain and I never got my period...just the spotting you are talking about. I was also having general discomfort in my abdomen besides the sharp pain.
But I have not heard of these issues 3 years in. Hope the doc calls you soon!
It's very possible it dislodged.
Hello M.. I too have the Mirena 5yr IUD. I havent had it very long. I hope I am as lucky as you have been without complications and maybe even no period at all. I would be in heaven with that. Anyway, enough rambling on my part. I was told the Mirena can cause ovarian cysts, so that may be what you are feeling with the pain coming and going like it does. I have had cysts in the past, but not related to Mirena. I do know they can be very painful and at times serious. I think you are very smart to call your Dr. I hope he/she calls you back and you get it checked out just in case. Good luck and best wishes.
It sounds like it probably just shifted a bit...there isn't anything that you can do about it and it will heal. Also it it very possible to get cysts on your ovaries (they go away in most cases). I don't know if that would cause the spotting or not, but the shifting sure could. Just try some IBP or Midol and let it pass. If you really are worried about call up your gyno and get checked. No sense in worrying.

I have the Mirena also, and in December last year I had the pains similar to yours and I called my doctor for an appointment and they had nothing open that week. I called back again later that day and told the appointment tech that I was having pains and that I was concerned about my IUD...after a moment on hold they asked me how soon I could get up there! So make sure when you call that you tell them you are concerned that it might be your IUD...mine wound up being ovarian cysts (which I've had before) and Endometriosis.

Good for you for calling your Dr. Be persistent until you are seen by him or her. Don't want to scare you, but your symptoms need to be checked out because the risk of an ectopic pregnancy is higher with an IUD in place. And,yes, women do get pregnant with an IUD---I've delivered a few such babies and helped a few women through miscarriage with an IUD removed or left in place. When I had the Mirena IUD inserted shortly after giving birth...my doctor actually perforated my uterus. The pain was excruciating and the bleeding was out of control. I had to have it IMMEDIATELY removed. After he made his "boo boo"...he informed me that there has been a lot of problems with the device dislodging (even after a number of years) and faulty mechanics (so to speak) after insertion. I would get to the doctor ASAP so they can do a sonogram and make sure that you are OK.
I'd get to the doctor asap - go to urgent care if they can't get you in.

I have the Paraguard IUD so it is completely different from what you have however, what struck me as unusual is your symptoms. I got my IUD November 2006 ever since then every month around the time of menstration, for about a week, I have these terrible pains on my left side. They are so bad sometimes I have to just sit. I usually take tylenol and they go away. I just have no idea what they are; they are NOT period cramps. The pain feels like its under my left rib or a little lower and deep inside. Also, I too, spot several days before my period and sometimes days after. My periods went from 3-5 days to 10. I don't care for it. However I do not like hormone endused birth control so I choose this. it is working obviously but with some weird side effects. I have had 4 ultrasounds by my OB because they can't explain the pain either and they are stumped. Everything appears normal in the ultrasounds. So for now I will wait, hoping that nothing is going wrong.

have you taken a pregnancy test? I got pregnant while my IUD was perfectly in place last August. I had pain and bleeding and tried to ignore it but it turns out that it was a tubal pregnancy and my tube was rupturing. Emergency surgery was needed and I'm lucky I got to the ER when I did. Please take a test just to make sure and maybe put another call into the Dr. I wouldn't want anyone else to go through what did. Feel free to contact me :)

You need to get your doctor to respond. Keep calling. You can develop PID with the IUDs. PID is an infection of the pelvic area. Are you running a fever? When you call your doctor tell them you think you may have an infection from you IUD. That will get their attention.
My IUD was perfect for almost 3 years. Then the spotting and on & off pain. Then each month it got worse. Debilitating pain that the Drs said was caused by my polycystic ovaries...WRONG. I had to INSIST they remove the IUD. It was an instant cure and I have been fine since. Even though the IUD hadn't broken through the wall or anything, my body just suddenly rejected it. That is my explanation/belief.
