Advice for Daughter Who Has a Fever That Comes and Goes

My daughter woke up Monday morning with a sore throat (which she complained about the night b/4) and a fever. That afternoon I took her to the doctor. Turns out it was strep throat. Her fever went away for a day but came back yesterday. Then last night it went away again but i still kept her home from school. Today her fever came back 101 and most recently 100.1. I read that normal children temp varies between 97 and 100.4 So do I send her to school tomorrow? Her most recent temp falls within that normal range.

What can I do next?

I had been told by my dr. that as long as they've been on antibiotics for a minimum of 24 hrs, is no longer complaining about a sore throat and has had a temp. that falls within the "normal" range for atleast 24 hrs, it's ok to send them back to school.

Hi, M.:

Send your child to school when her temperature stays normal for 2 days.

Good luck. D.

NO!! The rule of thumb is that the child be fever-free for 24 hours with no fever reducing drugs. Her resistance is dow and she could pick up something else!! I would keep her home for the rest of the week, if possible. Hope she feels better soon!

our school nurse advises per state guidelines (DE) that a child has to be fever free (under 100 F) for 24 hours without medication..since she has had strep throat I would call her doctor for advice too..

Or school policy is also fever free (under 100) for 24 hours until they can go back. This is without medicine. Last week my kids were about 104...so most of them missed 4 days. Since she was 101 today i would say no to tomorrow. That is how i worked it with my kids. Hope she feels better soon.

normally, most schools do not like the child to come to school with a fever. Check her temp before you send her to school. If she is on antibiotics that should get rid of the infection and in turn her fever should go down. I would give her some childrens motrin that will get the fever down for longer.

I've also heard fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school. Hope she feels better soon--poor kiddo.

I thought that 98.7 was considered a "normal" temp. Our school says that the child has to be fever free without tylenol/motrin for a minimum of 24 hours. She is obviously still fighting the strep....give her another day or so to recover. She won't be missing anything major at her age, and you shouldn't risk infecting other kids...or her being exposed to anything else in school while she is trying to get over this bug.

The others are right. My daughter battled strep last year and the fever came and went. It would go up mostly at night. She was out of an entire week. Kids need the rest to fight the strep. Keep her home. She's only 6 - it's not like she's missing calculus or anything she won't make up pretty easily anyway!

I agree with everyone about keeping her home. Also remember Swine Flu is in every school and if the child has any respitory problems they can end up in the hospital very quickly. Better safe the sorry for your child and other children.

Hi M.,

Your daughter's body is obviously doing it's best to fight whatever she has. I would keep her home until she is completely fever free for 24 hours just like most have said, although not because of any law or policy. It's really just to protect her from all the junk going around in school and to protect the other kids.

My daughter was out of school all last week, but only had a fever Monday and Tuesday. I just had to look in her eyes to know she needed to stay away from all the germs at school. I knew she would still be susceptible to whatever else was going around.

Give her fluids and hugs. Take care.

What does the doctor say? What does the school say? Most schools put information in the school handbook on when it is advised to keep a child home.

Also what do you think? Do you think she is well enough to go to school. I can tell when my kids are feeling better, because they start bouncing off the walls if I try to keep them resting. Is she eating normally? Does she seem like she is better? I wouldn't go so much by the temp, but how she seems to feel.

I remember having strep and going back to my normal routine too soon, and then wishing I had not, because I felt so horrible. She could suffer a relapse. I don't think it would hurt to keep her home an extra day or two.

I wouldn't send her tomorrow. I don't know if this is "law" but most schools and daycares I know of stipulate not to send your child back to school until they have been fever free for 24 WITHOUT the use of fever reducers. I would give her at least another day to recover and to monitor her temp. Do you know what her "normal" temp is? That can help you make your decision. Even if the "normal range" for children's temps ends at 100.4, just because your daughter's fever has dropped to that level doesn't mean that is normal for her. Hope she feels better soon.
