Does anyone know how popular the name Addison is becoming for girls? My husband really wants to name our baby girl that but it seems like everyone i meet latly is nameing their girls that.
It's a cute name! I think Addie would be a cute nickname for it. I've heard the name before, but I don't personally know anyone who has it. I don't think it's that common, at least not like Sarah, or Abigail, or Hannah, etc... If you like the name then go for it! :)

popular shows will always generate a boom of the names used or the stars's names.
It's best to avoid those types, speaking as one of 23 Debras in my educational career.
My husband and I are trying for a baby, and had planned to name her Addison. My friend got pregnant before I did, and named her daughter Addison...so I had to choose a different name for that reason...I'm not pregnant yet, and could very well have a boy, so it's a moot point...BUT...Addison is VERY popular. I was in line at a concession stand at our local kid's park and heard Addison twice...and at Sea World last week I met 3 Addison's....So...it definitely won't be a unique name for long...

my daughter was born march 2005 and her name is addison. at that time, it was like 78th out of 100 most popular names and i didn't know anyone with that name. now it seems like everywhere we go, there is an addison or addie. the name is in the top 20 now. i wanted her to have somewhat of a unique name and now i am kind of disappointed that it really isn't. my name is L. and there were never any other L.'s in my school. i like having a unique name. ultimately, you just have to go with what you like. good luck!

When we did a list of names, Addison was one of the names on it. I marked it off for two reasons. First, it has become very popular because of the Grey's Anatomy character and second, for family reasons (the nick would be Addie--long story). I liked the name, but I didn't love it, if I had, I would have had it on my short list and my daughter might have a different name. I agree with others here, if you LOVE the name, don't worry about whether or not other kids might have it. And, like someone else suggested, change up the spelling or pick a really cute middle name that you could add on if you wanted to make it a bit different. I know someone that picked Whitney when it was fairly popular and her daughter goes by Whitney Rose versus just the first name. My daughter will probably shoot us some day for giving her a first name with 9 letters, but we loved the name and the spelling.
"Addison" seems to have grown a lot in the past two years.

Addison/Addyson is such a beautiful name for a little girl, but it is definitely a popular one! I work at a well-known hospital in town (in the postpartum unit) and we have at least one Addison every other day being born....so yes, it is a VERY popular name. The new parents, after telling me what their new baby's name is going to be, they usually mention how much they LOVE Grey's Anatomy and that they love the character named Addison. Although it's a popular name, it is so precious and beautiful and each little Addison/Addyson with always have special characteristics in their personalities that make them unique!

I don't know about Addison, but Madison is all over the place. We named our little girl Madison. Everyone we meet seems to have or know a close relative with that name. I don't think there are many "Addison's" out there . . . right now. Good luck.

Hi N.,
For me personally I don't anybody with that name the closest is a friend of mine and her little girls name is Madison.
Also I got my first name from a beach boys song that my dad like. I liked the name Jillian but I wanted my daughter to have a unique twiest to it so I added an "E" so her name is spelt Jilliean and her middle name is Katherine from her grandma but here again I wanted to add my middle name (Kaye) to it so I instead spelt it Kathryne to spell out my name also. My fourth child, a girl we also wanted a unique name and my husband picked it out it's "Rhiannon" from the song also the same tittle that Fleetwood Mac sings, her middle name is "Lucille" which is her Great-Great-Grandmother. All of my kids have their own first name but then a family middle name. The boys are Christopher Micheal, and Matthew Thomas, we weren't very creative back then, but they all have very long names we didn't want to be unfair and leave anyone out.
I think you should go with it. I like the name no matter how any have it.
I like that name, have you check with vital statistics to see what they say the most popular is right now ??
Hope this helps W.

Who care's? Pick a name because you LOVE it!Our girls are Kailey and Kierstin ( K-ear-stin) and our son is Leo! I thought I was being different with Kierstin and then after I named her everyone was like I know so and so with that name. So far I haven't met any "young" Leo's. Mostly older ones. ANYWAYS! Good Luck and pick a name you like!

I believe it is one of those names that is REALLY getting popular. One of the doctor's on the hit show "Grey's Anatomy" is named Addison. So, I think there will be an "Addison" boom, just like what happened with the name Aidan. He was a character on "Sex and the City" and now you can't walk into an elementary school without running into a couple dozen Aidans. I LOVE the name Addison, though. And, I actually was going to name my son that. But, I chose Zachary instead. (Not the most original :)

I haven't read all the responses, so I'm sorry if someone has already mentioned this. We found a great website when we were choosing names: http://www.babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html It gives you the popularity of baby names over the last 100 years. Pretty neat!

I also have a baby girl on the way, due September 10th. We are naming her Addison Avery. I tossed the name around because I also thought that it might be too popular. Go to http://www.ssa.gov/. It is the social security website and they have release the top 10 baby girl/boy names for 2006. Addison is not on there. I think it will become popular but not like the others on the list.

I say name her what you want!! I have two kids Emma and Ethan and that is as popular as you get. They have never had another child with the same name as them so far in school. The funny thing is my daughter had two Jaylin's in her class.
I don't like the change of spelling to much as a teacher. It is hard to remember and sound out kids names!

That is a very cute name and I don't know anyone with that name. But if you wanted to go with that you could spell it different. Addisen, Addisin, you get the point. My sister chose to name her son Damien and everyone else spells it Damian. Her other sons nam is Austen instead od Austin. You can do it different ways. My husband and I are working on names for our next child...even though we aren't even pregnant yet. We like Landen and a lot od people named their kids that but spelled it Landon. I wish you luck though. Hope you find a great one!

Originally the name was old english for Adam's son, but it had become used as a girls name more recently. It is also a substitue for the name Edison in a boy. I believe the popularity is going up due to the character on Grey's Anatomy played by Kate Walsh, who's name is Dr. Addison Forbes Montgomery-Shepherd.
I would be careful of names that have links to pop culture characters. I was named after my Great Grandmother "Jennie" Randolph, but the movie Love Story with Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw came out in 1967 as well. The lead female character's name was also J.. As a result lots of girls were named J. that year. By the time I was a Senior in High School there were 9 J.'s in my US history class alone.
If the name has a family connection I would use it, but if your husband just likes the sound of it I would look at other names that start with A and sound good with your last name. Good Luck, names are tough to pick. My husband and I went around and around on name choices for our daughter.
Best Wishes,
J.

Congratulations on your little girl on the way!
I don't know any girls by that name but I do have a friend who named her son ADDISON CLARK. I have a friend who has a little girl named MADISON. So if you do decide to name your little girl Addison, people may just assume that your saying Madison b/c they sound so similar. (take this into consideration) If you both really like this name, you could always name her Addison & just call her by her middle name - there's a thought. :)
My husband & I have 2 children and we both decided on what we would name them. My husband picked the first name & I picked the middle name. We've always wanted our kids to have names that have special meanings. Our son's full name means: "Wise Leader" and our daughter's name means: "Anointed Gift from God".
Good luck on your decision. :)

I work in a pedes office and also have a home business of personalizing baby gifts, so this is a trend I notice! Addison is extremely popular, along with Aiden (with all the spellings, for boys and girls) Ethan, Madeline, Madison, Taylor, Conner (another unisex name) Cooper, Jacob, Mason (another unisex) Quinn, (unisex) Cameron (unisex) and any name that from which the nickname Allie can be derived, and I could go on for days. Seriously, if you want to name your child something "different", name her Mary or Elizabeth. I also disagree with "unusual" spellings. Speaking as someone who has an "unusual" name, I have been spelling my name out loud for others for the last 43 years. We have a Jakub at our office, and to me, that just looks like the parents were ignorant and didn't know how to spell Jacob! We also have a couple of Elyvias (pronounced Olivia)

Hi congrads on the baby girl !! I agree with everyone it might not be popular now but prepare yourself it will be once you have yours . We decided to name our middle son Hunter because we had never heard of it but it seemed like within a year after having him they were all over boys & girls . with our last son we really liked the name Arron but wanted to be different so we spelled it Arron and knock on wood we have'nt seen any spelled that way. My brother wanted to name there daughters after an aunt and my grandmother so they spelled there girls Stephuniee Jane & Trinitiee Seaaira , {Wierd I know} But they will always have there own uniqueness about them .But if you both really like the name and want to use it try spelling it different Yes it makes it hard to buy her stuff with her name already on but at least she has the unique spelling that the two of you designed toghether . Good luck to both of you and best wishes !
