Seeking All Moms Who Named Their Daughter Ella.

I really like the name, however I do know 5 Ella's. It is pretty popular now but if you love it, you love it. However, my favorite girl name that gives the same classic feel as Ella is Tessa.

For what it is worth, I have a 2 year-old niece named Ella and a 3 year-old "niece in-law" named Bella. It is a very popular name along with it's derivatives (Isabella, Bella, etc.) But, if you like it, who really cares? My daughter has a Hawaiian name, Mailee ("my-lee"), and I love it! However, since Miley Cirus blew up the stage, everyone assumes my daughter was named after her and that her name is just spelled "wrong." Ugh! You never know what is going to happen.

My 4 1/2 year old daughter is Ella and I'm so happy with her name. I love it!!! I know a few Ella's but she doesn't have anyone her age named Ella. Very easy for her to write. She was writing her name at 2 1/2 or 3. Super easy to spell! That was really nice!

My Ella is almost 7 and we have not run across any others her age but I have noticed an increased popularity. We have met quite a few younger than us. But that said, name your daughter what makes you happy who cares how many others have the same name.

My cousin is named Ella and there is an Ella at the school where I work. It is becoming a very popular name. If you love it, go for it. If you are looking for an original name, choose something else.
At the social security administration website you can look up the popularity of baby names. Ella has ranked #21 the last 2 years and has been climbing since 2003.

Hi Karen. My friend named her daughter Ella and not until she named her did she start hearing it everywhere. But she's the only one I actually know that is named Ella. I mean if you like it that's all that really matters and it's a nice name.

I think Ella is a beautiful name. I named my daughters, Emily and Kaitlyn, both very popular names and I did it on purpose. Growing up it was always a bummer for me because I could never find my name on anything. No cups, pencils, etc. So don't worry if its a popular name, my daughter has the number one name and we haven't met that many other Emilys. On the other hand, there were three Ava's in her ballet class.

aww Karen its a pretty name very danity, go with what you love not because its popular, or not. Just look at my name and be glad her name is ella and not T. I was teased alot and teased today, but then again I would not change it. By the way do you have a middle name picked out yet, I think rose would be pretty, Ella Rose.... sounds pretty !!!!

I have a beautiful 7 mo. old named Ella and of course, we think it's the greatest name around. ;) However, I will warn you... it IS becoming very popular. Especially with the babies and toddlers (I'm not sure about the school aged kiddos). I knew it wasn't the most unique name but I honestly had no idea it was already so popular. We have zero regrets though! At the end of it the day, you should absolutely name your baby the name YOU love regardless of the popularity. Congrats on having a baby girl!

I named my 7-week old daughter Ella! I've known I wanted to use it since 1995, when my grandma, with whom I was very close, passed away. When we were searching for a middle name (we chose "Catherine"), we discovered that Ella is now a very popular name. However, I have yet to meet any other babies with her age (personally). I'm sure that'll change, but if you like the name, I say go for it.

Go on the social security website. It is an incredible bank of info... How many people named their daughter Ella in each year and what percentage of the population that is... also type in different spellings for the same name.

On another note, Ella is a beautiful name and if it sings to you then go for it!

Ella is a cute name! If you love it, you should go for it! It will be the perfect name for your child because you love it so much.

I love the name and have not known anyone with that name, so it's not too common. Of course, once you name your baby you will suddenly start to notice "Ellas" out there, but that will happen with just about any name. If you like the name now, you will love it on your daughter because she will become "Ella. I have two boys and it seemed very difficult to name the first one - much easier the second time around. I think it is such a beautiful name, and wanted to use it for our daughter initially, but unfortunately in Spanish (as you probably already know) it means "her" and my family is Colombian. They would have never let us forget it. I haven't heard it nearly as much as I've heard Grace and Isabella. Those names seem to be extremely popular.

I read the response that said they didn't like that name and quoted a potential "school nickname" for Ella. I think kids will find something in any name to make fun of. Anyway, I have an Emma. I just loved it since I was little and didn't care how popular it became because I LOVEd it all my life and so did my husband. So, 3.5 years later I have never met anpother emma in her school or anywhere else. Sometimes the popular names aren't as popular because people try to avoid them once they're labeled as one of the most popular names. Oh...and I have never met another Ella either and I love that name.

Hi Karen. My mother's name was Ella and when we had our daughter my husband suggested we name her Ella. We decided upon Cambria for her first name and kept the honoring to middle names with both of our kids. To my surprise, every time I turn around there's another little girl named Ella. It is currently a popular name (at least for those 3-7 years). The best advice is to choose a name you really love and forget about it's popularity. We thought naming our daughter Cambria would be unique, but it is quickly gaining popularity too.

Hi, my daughter was born on Septemer 3rd, 2007 (Labor Day) and I named her Ella. My husband is from England and it is not too uncommon over there and it sounds good to the ear. Everyone that has come in contact with me has done nothing but tell me how beautiful it is and where I came up with the name.

At first I was going to name her Noreen, after my aunt, but my husband didn't like that too much, so I told him it was that or Ella because my ABSOLUTE favorite movie in the world is The English Patient, and one of my favorite songs from that movie is Cheek to Cheek by ELLA Fitzgerald. So, that is where I got the name from. I actually chose it because it isn't common. My name is J. and I can't stand "common" things. So there you have it...I hope this helps:)

I have been teaching for 7 years and I have not had an Ella in my class yet. I don't even know anyone named Ella.

We were going to name our first Daughter (now 3.5) Ella, we opted for Sophia instead and I'm glad we did. We live in the San Fernando Valley and there are so many Ella's out here. 2 in her Mommy and me class, 1 in her ballet class and 1 in her play group.

My cousin is named "Elenore" but has been called 'Ella" most of her life. It's a pretty name and my cousin is a great gal....however, upon hearing her name "Ella"...many people will often ask "is Ella short for something???" ie: Elenore?"

I did NOT name my daughter Ella, though I loved the name. I was worried about the popularity too, but I haven't heard it at all while out and about. If you absolutely love it, use it! :)

Hi Karen The only Ella I have ever heard of is the Jaz singer Ella Fitzjarraled. Look it up in the baby name book and see what it means, I did that with all 3 of my babies. J.

I don't know of any Ella's, but it is a lovely name. We named our first daughter Elizabeth. She has gone by Ellie since Pre-k, but has toyed around with Ella, Liz, Lizzie, Liza, El, Beth, etc... It's one reason why we went with Elizabeth- there are sooo many choices for her to choose from. You may want to think of doing that if you are concerned with the popularity factor like you stated....

no Ella's but i do have a friend that has a daughter named Ellerie and she calls her Elle...but haven't come across any at the playground yet.

Hi Karen, I think that Ella is a very pretty name. I haven't heard of it though- which can be a good thing (not overly used is good). I can't think of any teasing combinations that could go with it. If you and the daddy like it- go for it! (Of course it sounds similar to my youngest daughter's name- which I like- Elena, so maybe I'm prejudiced).

We named our daughter Amira Ella after her great grandmother whom we called Granny Ella. At that time, almost 3 years ago I hadn't heard of any other baby Ella's out there and didn't care either. Once she was old enough to start taking her to parks and such, I started noticing more moms calling for their "Ella's". I love the name simply because it means so much to me personally but also I feel even though it's "old school" it blends very very well today. Unlike a Bertha or Bessie which were my other "family name" choices.

I used to live in Russia where Ella is a very popular name, much more popular than in the US. I like the name a lot, I like all short names. I named my daughter Milan (like the city in Italy) but considered going with Ella also. A friend of mine recently had a baby and named her Elle, also something to consider.

name her what you really want her name to be just change the spelling to somthing more rare for example I named my daughter bailey but spelled it baili, and my son brighton but spelled it bryton get creative and make it your own :) good luck you could spell it aella or ellla

I named my daughter Brianna 22 years ago and had liked it for 7 years before that(but I would never tell anyone because I did not want it to be popular). Even though it was not popular then, it definitly is now, so my plan did not work.
However she was about 10 before I started seeing her name on "name" type things so I always had to have them made special which was kind of annoying. But I still love the name! Name her what you like!

I work at a preschool and let me tell you I wish people would go back to some traditional names. We have about 10 girls with Ellas and Bellas. Although a very pretty name it takes away from your child's true personality. I also remember all the Keylees and Kaylees and Tys. Just look for family tradition be different!

I know three Ellas, two of whom are under the age of 3. The other one is probably 6 now. It's a beautiful name, though. I like that it can be used on its own or as a nickname for longer names (I've heard Eleanor and Ellanah). I know even more Isabellas, several of whom have been shortened to Bella. I think there will be lots of Bellas and Ellas in school with my kid!

Ella is a beautiful name and seems to be popular for those who are 6 and under. She will be called Ella K. (if that is the initial of her last name) whenver there is more than one in her class. My 8 year old has many Hannah's so they are all Hannah A., Hannah G., Hannah M., etc.

I was a nanny to an Ella. She is now 9 and was my flower girl. She is a fantastic kid! Still can't believe she is 9, she was 4mo. when I started caring for her, they grow up too fast!! When she was lil we encountered a couple of other Ella's but not many. My best friend has one niece named Isabella and another named Bella. I personally think it is a great name. If you really like it who cares if it is popular! Naming is hard, but if your daughter comes out and she just looks like an Ella then name her Ella!

I know a bunch of younger aged girls named Ella. When I hear their name I think of Ella Enchanted, not Cinderella. Ella Enchanted is a great book and I named a number of my daughters and sons after wonderful literary characters. For example, I love the character Sara Crew from A Little Princess. My neighbor is naming her daughter, their 4th, after Amy from Little Women.

Ella gives the impression of someone with great internal capacity and strength for good, well, the book character does this. The movie character mostly does, save at the very, very end of the movie...Anyway, I prefer the book.

I believe the best name for a child is the one that edifies, the one that gives the zing up the spine, and the tingles from arm to arm confirming we have found the gem that matches their spirit. If Ella does this for you, then you have found a great match.

I love the name Ella, we actually were considering it for our daughter (now 6). We ended up naming her Kennedy. Because it was a family name. She was in Kindergarden last school year, no one in am or pm class was named Ella.
I had twins after and was hoping one was a girl so I could name her Ella, but ended up being twin boys.

I have a 5 1/2 year old Ella and throughout her preschool career have yet to encounter another Ella. Though there is one at her Ballet school and I heard another mother shouting for her Ella at the park just the other day. I love the name and while it has definitely become more popular we have not found ourselves surrounded by too many Ellas.

I have a two year old niece named Ella, she is the only Ella I know and I thought it was the cutest name when I heard it. It's not common or trendy name but a unique one perfect for your Princess. She won't have to worry about having three Ella's in her class or having to put her last initial behind her name to distinguish her from others. I think you picked a lovely name! I know a 5 year old at church with the name Ella. It is a pretty name. I think a name should be one you like and you know is not going to have weird nick names attached to it. Ella is a sweet name. My sister's grandson is named Arthur and she was worried about people teasing him about his name. Children will always find ways to tease other children, if it is not the name it will be big feet, or glasses, or curly hair. It is just the way school is.

My husband and I were teachers in the past and when finding a name for our daughter, Ella was it. No past students with the name and no other kids we knew with the name. I have heard a few Ella's called out when out and about. My Ella is a little over 2 and I love her name!!

My daughters name is Isabella (age 7) but she has always been called Ella. That was intentional even before she was born as my great aunts name was Ella. I don't know any other Ella's but I have run across little girls with the same name here and there. I would never regret using the name for her... I love it.

I don't have a daughter named Ella but my daughter's good friend 5.5 years old is Ella and we also know two others, 3 and 2 yo. I LOVE the name. In my daughter's school, we've not run in to one Ella yet and we are going on 3 years there (preschool - kindergarten). It's hard to know, all of a sudden it could be real popular but I say go for it, I'd name my girl that if we didn't already have friends w/that name and of course if I had another girl to name.. LOL!

You have many responses here.... I do not have an Ella nor do I know one, but when we were getting ready to name our son my husband and I came from very different directions. His name is Mike (Most common male name) and I am Jama (rarely heard of) we had our differences on what we liked from our own names...my suggestion....don't listen to everyone else, if you love the name then go for it. Everyone will have there own two cents to throw at you, but remember this is your baby! Best wishes!

Hi Karen, My daughter went to preschool this past year with an Ella, sweetest little girl by the way. I had the same concern naming my daughter 5 years ago Emma. I have not had my older daughters or my Emma in class with another one yet! If you LOVE the name and you envision having your sweet baby girl in your arms and calling her Ella, you need to name her that no matter what! I don't think you will have a problem with too many Ella's. You can look up the last few years most popular baby names on the internet too.

I have a daughter named Ella who'll be 2 and even though I know 2 other Ellas (one of my close friend named her daughter Ella) it doesn't bother me at all! If you LOVE the name just go for it! It's a beautiful name. Ella Fitzgerald is one of my favorite singers. It's a sweet name and my Ella is a sweet heart. Don't worry about what everyone else says everyone will have an opinion. This is your child and you should name her the name that you LOVE. Congratulations!

I don't have a daughter named Ella, but my kids go to a private school, K-12, and we know just about all the families or know of them, and there are NO Ella's at that school! (400 kids at the school) But it isn't such an obscure name that it's weird. It's a very nice name, but not yet popular at all. Hope this helps a little!
