I think you could almost get a new system for that price. However coils are the most expensive part. You could get a new unit for $3000. It would save you money in the long run because it would be more effective.
Does replacing AC "coils" really cost $2,200? Am I getting taken here?
Thanks!

Here's a good website with basic costs of most home repairs/replacements. Go to:
http://www.homeinspectorlocator.com
Then click on home repair, cost to repair and look for heating/Air conditioning.
According to this site, to replace heat pump or air conditioning compressor you can expect $800 - $1400. (This is for a typical 3 BR home, so you can guess up or down depending in your home.)
I'd never get this done unless I had several written estimates and was comparing apples to apples. Good luck!
Get several estimates, if you can. I know it is hot, and most people are desperate at this time.
Our central AC compressor went out almost 2 years ago... we didn't have the big bucks to replace it, so we just got a bunch (7) of window ac units from garage sales and craigslist... spent less that $300 on all of them.
We've saved money by cooling only the areas we need, when we are there.

Call and ask.
Yes... unfortunately, that's pretty much what it costs.

It does seem high. Make sure the company you are using is licensed. You can also check out if there are any complaints filed against the company.

Probably. When mine went I just replaced the whole system because it was only a couple hundred more and like others have mentioned you end up with a more efficient system.
My husband works on control systems that include HVAC systems. So our main blower motor went out last year, which is wicked expensive on a duel stage furnace, so we got the part and had it put in since Troy was out of town. We kept the old one and he had one of his HVAC friends fix the control module so now we have a back up. :)
My point is new system see if any of the old parts can be used and ask to keep them. With a little smiling and beverages they will do that for you. :) If you fix the old coils, I am not sure if they can be repaired but it may be worth looking into so you have a back up for next time.
Oh was still married to the tool when the coils went. Pretty sure if Troy had been in the picture we wouldn't have had to replace the whole system but then again how many people are married to someone who knows this stuff, ya know?
I am not sure about coils but if it is the compressor, then that's about the right price depending on the size of you a/c unit. However, definitely get a 2nd opinion. We were told at the beginning of the summer we needed new one and it would cost $1900 for out small house. We called someone else who came out, cleaned it and tested it and said it was fine and only charged us $70. It worked all summer but last night stopped working. I hope it is something easy this time.

I don't know. We built our house in 2000 and by 2005 we contracted with Collin Air in Plano to do some repair work on the lousy builder quality system.
We know Brian at Colliin Air personally and he is not the cheapest around but he is fair with pricing and his staff is very good.
We spent about $20,000 to remove everything (furnaces, duct work, etc) and replace with a quality system.
They even found a crack in our heat exchanger which should have never been installed in our house to start with. They had to stop working and we had to replace that by construction regulations because it could have burned our house down or we could have been poisoned with carbon monoxide.
An initial call is around $100 for them to come out but well worth the costs. You get what you pay for with Collin Air.
