Hi Ladies,
Yesterday my 5 month old had an allergic reaction to something we cannot figure out.We recently started him on baby food and yesterday he started sweet pototatos. The sitter gave it to him at 11:45 and he spit up most of it.(he also has reflux). After that she only gave him breast milk. So the only thing that has changed is the start of baby food. She left at around 3:00 to pick up her oldest son and returned home at 3:45. He was asleep so she put him in his swing. I got there at around 4:15 and when I walked in he was red and his eyes were swollen and his ears. When I ripped off his clothes he was covered in hives and a rash. We called 911 and before he got there it the hives were starting to fade but they were still all over his body. The emt said that they didn't find any bites on him but that it could be something in the air. I am baffled because we have no clue what caused it and I am clueless on where to start to find out. I have a call into his pediatrican to discuss everything and I am not giving him anymore baby food. I don't think it is the baby food, but i could be wrong. He is fine today, but he still has a little rash under his arms and around his neck. My sitter is watching him very close today and says that his feet and hands are swollen. We don't know if it is still related to what happened yesterday I am a little paranoid. My 3 year old never had anything like this so this is all new to me. Any help would be great. I had to come to work today or I would have stayed home with him.....I feel like a horrible mom for not knowing what do do.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I know you were scared and shaken by that experience. Food allergies are so sudden to healthy children (and adults) that we forget how vulnerable we are to what we eat. I agree with the others that it could be something you ate or the potatoes. At this age your baby really gets adequate nutrition from your breast milk and a little cereal. Perhaps you can hold off on the potatoes until your little guy is somewhat older and if you are happy with vege's and cereal, then go with a blander solution like carrots, peas or green beans for now. Also look at the preparation, was there peanut oil in something you or your child ate? That tends to have a very sudden and severe reaction. The other things you can look at is any family allergies that perhaps you didn't now this baby may have inherited. You really have to put on your Dr Watson and Sherlock Holmes hat sometimes so it is good to work thru this with your pediatrician.
Good Luck to you and your little ones. Have a very merry christmas.

When we first started on baby foods, the doctor suggested giving the same food for two to three days. That way if he was allergic to something we would know what it was. Also, you may want to question what you had eaten because he did have the breastmilk, but more than likely it was the baby food. I would definitely talk to the pediatrician to see what he/she suggests. Probably stop with the baby food until you talk to him or her.

I'm so sorry. It's really hard when your baby is hurting or uncomfortable because they just don't understand, and they can't tell you what hurts. :o( Poor baby. I hope he's feeling better.

I also want to add that my little angel had trouble with sweet potatoes and carrots at first. We always had orange spit up on our carpet (yeah cute, huh?). We didn't start giving baby food until 6 months, though, which I think was helpful. I think the sweet potatoes were too harsh on my sweetie's tummy.

I am so sorry this is happening to your sweet boy! I wouldn't give him any more baby food until you speak to his pediatrician. Be persistent when trying to get in to see the doctor. Something is not right and your mama's intuition knows this!

the baby food might not be the problem. you need to evaluate what you have eaten as well since what you eat affects your breast milk. That could possibly be the culprit. Once, i ate salsa at a restaurant and when i nursed several hours later my daughter screamed in agony so i pumped and threw away the milk as she was fine with the milk i had frozen before, the milk i was nursing her with had been tainted by the salsa. Something worth looking into.

are you introducing the baby foods slowly (like every 5-7 days). this helps tremendously with figuring out if a certain food is the culprit. my son was allergic to sweet potatoes when i first started him on them. the first time i gave them to him he threw up but i thought maybe he had a virus or something and wasn't sure. so i waited a while and when i tried them again, he was even sicker the 2nd time and threw up until he had completely emptied his tummy. i've heard lots of people say their little ones couldn't tolerate sweet potatoes for some reason. i finally tried them again when my son was about 2 or 2.5 and now he does fine on them and loves them.
