Always Run Down

I work FT, am a mother to two young children and a wife. I try to eat good and exercise when I can. I sleep enough hours at night, but not always well. Lately, I have been really run down. I wish I could just go to bed and sleep an entire day, but that is NOT going to happen. I feel bad because when I come home from work I don't feel like making dinner and playing with the kids. I'd rather just sit and cuddle with the kids or read a book. While I can skip dinner, my kids can not and my husband will just eat junk.

Any solutions you mom's use to keep your energy up? I just need to keep going when my work day ends and my life work continues.

There is a product called Fatigued to Fantastic that is supposed to help with energy. You can order it online or you can try looking at health food stores for it. I heard great reviews about it online. I think it is 40-50 dollars for a one month supply. I ordered it a while back ago and did notice a slight improvement in my energy. Hope this helps.

Have you had your thyroid checked? Mine have always been fine until I had kids, and my main symptom was sheer exhaustion. Its a simple blood test, might be worth looking into.

The F2F product is an excellent produc if you tolerate dairy and you can get if relatively cheap at www.iherb.com. However, you really need to get your thyroid checked. Make sure that they measure your Free T3 and Free T4, along with thyroid antibodies. Most just measure TSH and that's not a very accurate measure of how your thyroid is working. Also, get your iron checked - ferritin which is the best measure of your iron stores. Many young mothers are woefully low because most docs only check it while you're pregnant and you're usually taking the prenatal vitamins then, which have extra iron. If you're iron is low, your body cannot produce adequate energy.

I defininetly agree with Gail. Get your thyroid checked. My husband has hypothyroidism and if his medicine is off or he forgets to take it he gets real run down also. After I had my daughter her and I were both tested for it. Our daughter for obvious reasons.... her father has it and she could get it to, but me because many people get this after they have kids and my mother did. It turns out I don't have it but you should totally keep an open mind about it. Oh, and don't worry about getting checked out. Like Gail said, it's a simple blood test and if you do end up having it then all you have to do is take medicine, it's not a major thing. Just a pill everyday. I also think you can get shots every so often but my husband doesn't have the time due to work.

I agree that you should rule out any medical problems first. I started feeling extra tired toward the end of my pregnancy and thought it was just part of it. I mentioned the problem off hand to my doctor. She had me get tested and I was low on iron. A thyroid problem or blood sugar issues could also be a possibility, and if your not sleeping well it could be your sleep quality - or lack there of - due to sleep apnea or some other sleep disorder.
Why can't your husband cook once in awhile?
Good luck, I hope its easily resolved. You aren't alone so don't be too hard on yourself, we all feel drained soemtimes.

When was the last time you took a vacation (and I mean a relaxing vacation - not one of those vacations where you spend the whole time stressing about the next activity or how to keep your kids happy)? Sounds like you need some "me" time - how about getting a massage or spending a day shopping or doing something else you enjoy? I don't have kids, but even I get run-down if I've gone a long time without focusing on me.

Also, are you happy with your current job? If you're bored or it's stressful or you don't feel challenged, that can carry over into your personal life (and might explain why you'd rather stay in bed than get up and go to work). Maybe it's time for some soul-searing and decide whether you want to stay where you are or change jobs.

If you've tried all this and it hasn't worked, I'd definitely get your thyroid checked. (or, get it checked right away anyway just to rule that out).

I am in the same situation as you. I have two babies...11 months apart. My daughter is 15 months and my son is 4 months. I work full time 30 miles from home and I used to be constantly tired. I have started using Herbalife products and they are good for energy, and a plus for my situation...they aid in weight loss. You might check out herbalife.com and see if they might have something to help you out.

i would start by seeing your doctor and getting a good checkup along with a complete blood panel, including hormones and thyroid. i would avoid all the herbal junk like the plague, there aren't really any governing agencies that regulate that stuff and you don't always know what you're really getting. i too suffer from feeling rundown all the time, i joined curves last night and worked out last night and i actually feel better already. it could also be physical symptoms of depression or anxiety, in which case an rx may help. good luck and i hope you are feeling MUCH better soon!
