Another Strep Throat Question- Low Grade Temps

Hi!
My son has had strep throat and a couch since Tuesday. He has been on antibiotics since, but still is running a fever of 99.5. His fever on Tuesday and Wed was very high. When i give him Advil it goes down. Occasionally when I take him to the Doctor and he is there for something other than not being sick, he still runs a 99.2 or so temp. Do you think this is indicative of something else? Makes me nervous.

What can I do next?

Its indicative that he has strep throat.

As long as it responds to Tylenol/ibuprofen, its fine. If he's maxed out on Tylenol & Ibuprofen (taken both within the past 3 hours) ... And is 103 & climbing... Take him in immediately. But a low grade fever is just his body fighting the infection.

Id only be concerned (all thing being equal / aka no other health issues) if it were a stubborn fever (see above, not responding to meds), or lasts longer than 10 days. Although, I would call my sons Doctor on Tuesday just to update them, as there are R-Strep strains that may need different antibiotics / are resistant to the antibiotics he's already on.

a temp. of 99 is not really considered a fever. Some people just run a bit warmer than others. My son is the same way. His "normal" is 99. I wouldn't worry about it. We are also dealing with strep right now in my daughter and with myself so I know it's no fun. I hope your son feels better soon!

Our ped is never really concerned w/our temp when it comes to strep, the usual symptoms are the light sensitivity to our eyes, the belly ache, headache & the obvious......sore throat. Unless his temp hits above 101.5 I don't believe that's even considered a temp. I'd just continue trying to make him comfy & call the ped if he worsens. Hope he feels better soon :)

Do you take his temp on a normal basis to know what his baseline is when he isn't sick? If he goes to the doc and isn't really sick, but still seems like he has a fever, he may have a warmer baseline than average. We all run at different temps and 98.6 is "normal". To give you an example

Me: 97.1
Son: 96.4
Daughter: 98.2

My Brother: 99.3 (he is always cold and my son and I am always hot)

Normal is relative. If I get to 99 I am in a lot of discomfort from aches and pains. Same with my son. My daughter doesn't complain until about 99.5 or so, like a normal person. So, I highly recommend recording a baseline for all of your family, and make sure the doctors know what it is, especially if it is very far from 98.6. I hope that helps clarify your confusion/or concerns. Good luck and keep taking care of him.
