Any Experience with Roseola?

My 15 month old had a fever for about 4 days which broke and then he got a rash all over his body. Classic symptom of roseola. When he first had the fever, the dr took a look at him and didn't see anything wrong so I'm pretty sure nothing else is wrong with him but these past few days my sweet little boy has been SUPER cranky. At daycare he's fine but when he gets home he's throwing a little tantrum every few minutes or so. He doesn't want to eat or drink his milk (typical things he loves to do) and the only thing that appeases him is going outside. Is he just voicing his opinions or does roseola usually make your baby super cranky? Plus I noticed he's itching around his ears sometimes but I heard roseola doesn't itch?? Any mamas out there w/ roseola experience? Does this sound typical or should I take him back to doctor?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My son is all better! A day after I posted this, he came home from daycare gurgling and happy as can be. Plus, no rash! What a difference 24 hours makes. It seems like it was just the roseola. I was going to make an appt w. the dr but seems I don't need to :) Thanks everyone for your advice!

No Tylenonl, use something else like Motrin for children as Tylenol depletes Glutathione which is what the liver and immune system needs to make them work and it puts it on hold for up to 22 days. Also, NO vaccines of any kind for at least two weeks after he is all better.

Cold the rash be strep, which now is ear infection? My daughter had an ear infection last week, and than broke out with a rash, her dr said it was strep rash... If he doesn't normally itch his ears, I would take him to the dr (sorry, i am one of "those" moms that run to the dr for everything!)
Anyway, Good Luck, and I hope he feels better soon!

My baby got an ear infection the same day her rash broke. I would think their immune system is down so he might be fighting off something else. Just a thought! I knew it was an ear infection because her equilibrium was off. Good luck - that was a tough week for me!

It sounds like the Roseola has taken it's course and he is expressing himself now. We just went through the exact same thing. Fever made my little one very cranky and then she was better after the rash appeared. It's the age where they start asserting there independence. I would not take him back in. Maybe, he is just going through an "I want to be outside" phase. This too shall pass, right? Good luck Mommy. :)

He could also be teething and the timing is just a coincidence. Give him some motrin and see if that helps. My son had roseola and he was miserable too. He was tired but quickly recovered. You could always have his ears checked to make sure he doesn't have an ear infection.

When my daughter had Roseola, my pediatrican said "you'll probably want to sell her." So yes, cranky is very much a symptom. Give it a few more days, and if he's not better, take him back to the doctor.

Alternately, he could have fifth disease, which is marked by a low grade fever and a "lacy" rash all over the body. There's nothing to do about it either, and the rash comes and goes. You can google some good images and see if it's like what your son has. My advice is the same, though, wait a few days and if he's not better, take him back to the doc. Good luck.

What you described is how my son's hand foot and mouth presented itself. Fever, and then a rash. We only noticed it because the rash was all over him. The eating/drinking could be the blisters in his mouth. The first time my son got it, he just screamed when we tried to feed him anything. I would take him to the doctor if I was you.

Poor guy!! When my daughter had Roseola she was awful & not fun to be with!! I would probably take your son back in to check for an ear infection or Strep. If there is something besides the Roseola, you'd want to know sooner rather then later! Good luck!

Dear S.s.:

This virus is caused by human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6. Has your child been vaccinated lately? This is very common 1 day to 3 months after vaccines. Chicken Pox is the most common one for this reaction.

Does he fuss when you lay him down to change his diaper? Has your ped done a thorough ear check? I had a similar situation with my son and it turned out that he had an ear infection too but we missed it because we focused on the roseola. Ears will hurt while baby is drinking from a bottle, cup or straw. They will also usually hurt more when baby is on his back. My poor son was in incredible pain and I didn't know. I was treating him with gas drops because I thought all of his fussiness was a result of colic. Turns out he had an ear infection. I felt like the worst mom of all time but neither of our ped docs caught it either so they say I shouldn't feel bad about it. Sure say that to a mom who's let her kid 'cry it out' when he had a raging ear infection! Thank God he makes little boys to love their mothers even if we unknowingly torture them! Just keep in mind that little guys don't get grumpy without reason and unless it's an acute issue over being told that he can't have any more ice cream then it probably is a physical issue. Sometimes it's simple like cutting teeth or a tummy ache but it could be something that needs a doctor's care. If you feel like there's something wrong then you're probably right. I can hear the difference between the mad, sad, and hurt crying and I'm sure you can too. Don't ignore that. If your gut says he's ill or in pain you should follow your instinct. I'd rather waste my time with a doctors visit than regret not going. My son needed surgery to remove all of the stuff inside his ear. I don't know that it would have made a difference if we'd caught it earlier but at least I wouldn't second guess myself!

It doesn't sound typical to Roseola...once they get the rash, they should be feeling fine again and it doesn't itch.

I would take him in again...have the doctor look at his throat too.
