Any Good iPad Games for the Airplane?

We're flying out on Tuesday, 6 hour flight, and I'm looking for a good, quasi-educational game that might keep my 5-year old son busy for part of the trip. We don't game much and the only thing we've played together recently is Zombies vs Plants which, despite the gory topic, is good for strategy and is weirdly addicting.

I would be interested in something that helps nudge his reading along a little in a very fun way (he basically reads 2 words right now - up and zoo). Or, on the flip side, something that deals with very basic math concepts. On the flip, flip side, something that is just flat out fun. Any suggestions?

The ones my son likes are iStory books. He can read them, or the app will read to him, but the words are still there.

The other one we have that he might like is Build a Train. He can select the engine he likes and the different kinds of cars. Then it takes you to the train tracks where you have to set the route so that the train can pick up the cargo, which is at a different station each time. You get points for each cargo you get. It's fun and requires a bit of strategic thinking for them. And it's trains. Boys love trains.
I think these were both free apps.

My 3 and 4 year old LOVE Toki Tori! It is a really great game for teaching strategy and logic. My son (4) also likes playing Wind up Knight. I would also suggest www.kindertown.com for downloadable apps. These games are recommended/created by actual kindergarten teachers for their academic content in all subject areas. Good luck!

I have Preschool Words on my tablet and I saw an Umisoomi (sp?) math game offered. My younger one likes the words game better since my older one is halfway through K and reading a little bit (25-30 words). My kids (3 and 6) love to read Dr. Seuss books on my tablet (it is a Nook tablet). My older one also LOVES Plants vs. Zombies and Angry Birds. Bag It is also pretty good. Lately I have had good luck teaching my older one sight words he needs to play the video games

I have 14 pages of free applications on my android that the kids play all the time.

Angry birds, normal, seasons, and Rio. Rio is my favorite. Hubby likes Seasons best. All free. I also have the back up apps so that if my phone dies I do not lose the levels I have accomplished. I back them up every time I am about to leave the game. The backup's are also free. I play card games, board games, puzzle games, the kids like some of the more active games that remind me of mario brothes or donkey kong, there are pages and pages of free things in the market. Try them out if they look interesting.

My friend does tons of pod casts, she does Zombie ones, love story ones, comedian ones, etc...there are so many different options for you, she has an Iphone and the other "I" items.

Once you get 3 stars in each level you get rewarded by new games and levels opening up with all kinds of treats. She can even listen to her favorite radio stations anywhere.

One thing that I like to do too is Words With Friends and Hanging With Friends. The Words is like scrabble and Hanging is hangman. You invite your friends from either FB or you contact list and then you play back and forth with them. Some people play all day and some can only play when they are laying in bed at night and have a few minutes of quiet time.

It is one of those that I hated my friend putting on my phone, but I have found I enjoy it. I play about 20 games all the time on both and have friends waiting for a free spot. I don't win very often but I am getting there, I have actually won a few now.
