Anyone Have a Son That Had/has Hypospadias Chordee?

My son was diagnosed with a very mild case of this at birth and we just visited the urologist (Dr. Kass) this week. He is recommending surgery when my son is 6 months old. It sounds like it is a fairly routine surgery and will be about an hour, but it is done under general anesthesia, so I am, of course, worried.
I'm just looking for any advice, reassurance, experiences (good or bad), etc.
This is completely uncharted territory for us! Thank you!!!

Hi E.,

My son is 4 years old and when he was born he also need the repair surery for hypospadias, with him it was not a matter of getting a second opinion, he quite obviously needed the surgery. Our urologist was Dr Bartkowski and he came highly recommended by our pediatrician. Our son did require a second surgery once he was a year, but he recovered great from both and now he urinates just fine and everything works perfect. We were also worried and stressed, but we put our trust in the trained professionals and had great experiences with the staff at Sparrow. I know it's scary, but try to remain positive.

Good Morning
My son was born with a condition that required surgery. We had Dr Kass perform his surgery when he was six months old, under general anesthesia and everything turned out fine! Dr Kass is wonderful. I was a nervous wreck and cried the whole time, but I did have complete trust and faith in him. The only bad part was they were not running on schedule on the day of surgery and my baby couldn't have anything to eat or drink before hand so he was getting very cranky since he was hungry! Other than that, I was happy with the hospital staff. Good Luck!

hi E., my name is A. and my son, who is now 2 years old was diagnosed with the same thing. it is a little scary, they are so little then!! however, he had surgery at sparrow when he was 6 months, again at 1 year and again just a few months ago. if you are having your son's surgery done at sparrow they are very good. they update you on everything that is happening so you are never left wondering what is going on. the hardest part is the after care but because he is so little he will heal really fast and be back to his normal self very soon. my little guy actually came home from the hospital the last two times and you couldn't even tell what he had just been through. anyway, i just wanted to reassure you that all will be fine and your son will be so thankful that you did this for him in the long run. good luck, i am here if you need anything else!

I would get another professional opinion before your son gets surgery. I don't know that much abut it but I do know that their are varying degrees of it? If he does need surgery at least you will know that more than 1 Dr recommended it.

They told me my son needed surgery because he has a hernia under his belly button and I have had 2 other opinions since and he doesn't need surgery and is 2 years old and it shrank down on it's own.

HI E.,
I have 3 boys 2 of which had this diagnosed at birth. It is a very routine surgery and only took about an hour. My oldest had the surgery when he was 3, he's now 12. The other was done at about 6 months and he's now 3 1/2. My suggestion would be make sure it's done first thing in the morning. It's very hard not to let a baby eat and he won't be able to after midnight. Also, remember to stay calm before they take him, you don't want him to get upset. It's a very simple short surgery and you'll be back with him in no time. Take care!

From what I have read about this abnormal condition surgery sounds like a good ideal. I would have the surgery done at a childrens hospital where the physician giving the anesthesia has had much more practice with infants. The chordee means it is a painful condition which may get worse as he grows. Good luck!!

Well my son does not have hypospadias chordee, he did have surgery when he was 6 months old (3 actually) for a cyst and extra fluid on the brain. And the general anesthesia was just fine we had no complications from it. So I hope this eases some of your worries. I know too that doctors do not want to do surgery on little babies and only offer it as a nessicatiy (sp). Good luck. M.

E.,

My son had the same thing, and while we all worry about anesthesia, everything went very well. It didn't take long, the staff was great (I also went to Dr. Kass) and they brought me back to him as soon as he woke up. There were no problems and I was very happy with the way things went. I'd never heard of anything like that either and they did well to answer all my questions and reassure me that everything would be fine. Try not to worry too much, everything should be fine!
