Anyone Experience Hydrocele with Son and Had Surgery?

yes, M. my son had the same thingfor maney months. with him, it didnt stay gone,(would come and go.) he also had a hernia, and we had to do surgery. (yes, it was scary haveing my "baby" haveing to go through this, but,)things went well, (and it turned out he had two hernias.) his hydrocele problem went away after that.(this was all about a year and a half ago). he hasnt had any more problems as far as that goes, anymore. T., mom of one (happy health, almost three year old.) p.s., we used dr. hoover at all childrens physician bldge, in st.pete. fl. he is a very good dr.

I had that experience with one of my sons. He got the surgery at just 3months old. Thank God it all went well, no complications or anything. He is now 9 yrs old. It was not done in Florida though.

My son was born with a hydrocele and inguinal hernia. They monitored it for a year and opted to do surgery at 13 months old. Recovery was minimal, and they did NOT use general anesthesia on him. They put him to sleep, of course, but it was not done with a general anesthesia because of his age. He was also given an epidural-like shot while he was asleep that kept him numb from the waist down for the rest of the day so he wouldn't aggravate the area.
I never heard about or read about any sterility risks, so I can't help you there. Was never told anything about it, and the surgeon never brought it up.
His surgery was done at Scottish Rite in Atlanta, about 6 years ago, so I can't advise you on anyone in your area.

i work for a urologist. this is a more common that what you would think. even grown adults can develop a hydrocele. i have two pediatric urologist in my office. I work in Cape Coral FL. about 3 hrs south of Orlando. I have worked here for 4 years and i have never seen a "problem" develop after or during a hydrocele surgery. now i am not saying that one wont/cant happen. but i am saying that i personally havent seen on within my practice within the 4 years that i have worked here. My son was just 4 months Old when he had this opperation and that was almost 31 years ago and now I am a happy grandmother of 3 counting . I was real scary for me with the anesthesia it made me nervous but everything turned out just fine . good luck to you

I am a grandmother in Florida and recently had bladder surgery in Orlando. If you aren't sure of a urologist, I can recommend the one I had: Dr. Dennis Donahue. I've seen him in Orlando, Apopka, and Altamonte Springs. I also met one of his colleagues when I was hospitalized and his name is Dr. Adam Gerber. They have several places they see patients. My son had a hydrocele but it went away. But he also had an undecended testicle and we had Dr. Micheal Keating of Nemour's Hospital do his surgery for that. Dr. Keating was great to me and to my son. Even though my son was only 4, Dr. Keating talked to him and was friendly at the consultation, before the surgery and at post-op. He explained everything to me and answered all my questions (I always have a lot) and never made me feel rushed.

As far as the anesthesia part, Dr. Keating gladly gave me his statistics on how many surgeries he's done. I asked how many were successful, if he had any complications, how he handled any complications, who will the anesthesiologist, their statistics, and any other question I could think off at the consultation.

I googled everyone prior to the surgery and read really good reviews of both Dr. Keating and the Anesthesiology group they use. So it made me feel better.

Yes, there are risks and they will go over all that with you but definitely ask what are the possibilities of the risks occuring, what is the risk of not doing anything, what is the risk of waiting. Decide from there what makes you think is the best. If something comes up in the future, you have to be able to confident that you did everything you could and checked everything you can, and made the best decision you could with that - that's all you can do.
