I am thinking about switching my phone service to Vonage to save on my monthly bill. Does anyone have experience with this service, good or bad? I really don't know much about it. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi, I had Vonage, and switched to Sunrocket! I am much more pleased with Sunrocket. www.sunrocket.com. Vonage had too many issues.

Sometimes we have to reboot the connection but with the few problems there are it is worth paying less. Some problems you need to work with vonage to iron it out. I feel it is well worth it to have it.

We had Vonage for about a year and half and had no issues with it. We switched to another VoIP called Viatalk a year ago. They gave us a great deal. Pay $200 in advance for 2 years of service. So far it has been great, and saved alot of money. I would totally recommend either of those, but I have also heard good things on Sunrocket too. My husband is in IT, and he is definitely happy with the service.

I don't recommend switching for Vonage. We have lots and lots of problems with Vonage. Sometimes we can't get the line. Sometimes, people at the other end can't hear me and we have to disconnect the modem to reset it. If I didn't have my cell phone for back up, I would not keep Vonage. For now, we're staying because of the price.

Hi K.,

I know people who really like the service...the long distance is unbelievable! I personally had it for almost a year, and just switched to verizon because I had so many problems. ie: whomever was calling couldn't hear me, until I said "hello" about 3 times, I had feedback coming through the phone, and at some points the person I was talking to sounded like they were an alien(ha)....and they were not on a cell phone. My thought was if I wanted "cell phone like" connection, then why bother to have a land line? This was my experience anyway.

Have a great day!

K.

we've had vonage for about 2 years and never had an issue.

ETA: I read what someone else wrote and had to mention... I LOVE that I get an email when someone leaves a VM. I actually listen to my VM at work over vonage's website more than I do over the phone. And if it's for my husband, I simply save the VM and email it to my husband.

Another cool feature: Simulring. It will ring your house AND your cell phone (or whatever number you put in) so you are less likely to miss a call. This has come in very handy on several different occasions.

I have Vonage service for my business phone, and I haven't had any trouble. You are able to pick your phone number, and you can pick it in any area code. You have free long distance to anywhere in the U.S. The only slight problem I have experienced is, when you are on the line, and another call comes in, it cuts in and out a little. Also, since I only use it for my business phone, I still have my regular home phone line, which isn't Vonage, so I haven't worried about the emergency 9-1-1 situation. I heard that you can't call 9-1-1 on a Vonage phone, but I know there was a big uproar about that and I'm sure they did something to accomodate. I just hadn't had the need to research and find that out, since I've had my home phone for that. Overall, a good experience with Vonage.

We have had vonage for around a year now. It does have its ups and downs. For the most part we are happy with it. I would not recommend this for someone that has internet services through the satelite nor would I if you are on dial up. The biggest problem I have with it is a number that is local to where I live. My firends next door have to pay long distance to contact me! The one thing I love is that you can keep up with every call made from your home and every call that comes in. By the way I am not sure why you were told that you do not get 911 services, but you do. I have used my 911 services in the past and last night. It worked perfectly! I have not a complaint with the ability to get police, fire, and rescue out to my home through vonage.

Good luck in your search for a good phone service,
Dene' H.

We've had vonage for over 2 years and like it. I also like that if you have a cell phone you can have all calls automatically forward to your cell or any other number if your internet goes out so you never miss a call.

I have had Vonage for several months now and love it. I use my cell phone mostly but needed phone service at the house for my kids and in order to have satelite television. I love paying $19 a month! The only drawback is if your internet goes down, so does your phone. But, that's rare.

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!!!
This is the worst phone company ever. They tell you no contract at the sign up but it is untrue. I signed up in November to have an phone case if we had problems with our home phone. I called to cancel they tell me that I cant cancel for another two months without a penalty for not compeleting a year of service. I called back two months later and they charged me for disconnection anyways. They will not put a manager on the phone, they are very rude to you, and there is no home office to report complaints too. Do not even if its your last phone call on earth use this company!

WEll...We would be a vonage horror story. At our old house we would lose service, or have audio issues every other week. No exagerating. Once you sign up and get through your first month you are stuck in a contract. Don't you know it worked fine that first month. Since we have moved I have not noticed it weirding out, that was a month ago now. I did cut my phone bill in half though. Something else to keep in mind that a jury found them guilty of pattent infringement and they are appealing that. The original sentance was that they had to pay royalties and they could no longer sign up new costumers. There has been a stay on that judgement since they are apealing but in the long run they may just go under.

Hi K.,

We've had Vonage for 3 years now and I think it's great! Yes, it does go out every so often but never for very long and when it does, you can set it to automatically transfer incoming calls to the phone of your choice (like your cell phone for example). I have never once regretted switching to vonage and not to mention the money you are saving is great!!!

P.S. I'd also like to add that at one point I cancelled our service (only because we were moving) and I had absolutely NO trouble cancelling. It was quick and easy and the person I spoke with was very nice.

We have it and I love it, you will save a lot of money if you make a lot of long distance calls. The only thing I can say bad about it is sometimes it will stop working and you will have to unplug it to restart it.

Other perks...
receive emails when you have a voice mail with the number dialed
you can view phone histroy online, like a cell phone bill.
It's cheap!

I love my Vonage! I get my voicemails sent to my email, and can easily forward it to my cell phone if I'm expecting an important call. On the rare occasion something goes wrong with the internet connection, it forwards automatically. You can get 911 service, so don't worry about that. You just have to register you address (you'll do it when you set up your service). We ported over our old landline number and never missed a beat.So many cool little features, plus we save a bundle. The phone sounds the exact same!

We had Vonage for about a year. We were really diappointed with the service. I would really not recommend it. The money we saved just wasn't worth the headache. Often relied on our cells while Vonage worked out the trouble. Canceling the service was a nightmare. If you ever heard that famous call about the man trying to cancel his AOL, it is no different. They make it difficult to reach them and once you do they give you a real hard sell to convince you to stay. Don't mean to be negative, but I just wish I had known these things before I contracted with them. Good luck whatever you decide.

We had Vonage. The service wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. There would be feedback while talking. Something to consider as well: at the time we had this and it may still be the case, the line is NOT connected to 911 services. A friend of ours ended up without phone service for 2 weeks while doing the switch to Vonage. We didn't encounter that problem, but it is possible.

We use Verizon Fios and are very happy! You can get phone, TV, and internet all from them.

Hi. My friend switched to save money and hated it-lots of problems. She switched back to her old phone company and her phone service still isn't the same. Really screwed up when she switched to Vonage.

Good luck

My mom tried Vonage for about two months and during the time she had it, it was pretty bad. Her internet was with a smaller company, and because of that, she had connection issues between Vonage and the internet company. Also, when I would talk with her over the phone, the voices were digitized and there was reverb.

One thing to think about: If you have a house alarm, you will need to keep your land line as most alarms have to be connected directly to a wired phone. Also, there is the emergency factor where you can't dial 911.
