I'm not sure if anyone else has ever had this problem, but I thought that I would ask anyway. I just recently got a tattoo (a week ago) and I had been putting Vitamin A&D ointment on it. Well I quit putting that on there. I had tried other stuff also. Well I have now developed a rash from the middle of my back to the backs of my knees. It is some what painful, not too bad though. The place where I got the tattoo was clean and the needle was sterilized. So my question is has anyone else had this before or have an idea as to what it may be? I am going to try to go to the dr tomorrow. Thanks in advance for the info.
I want to thank those of you who responded to my request. I went to the dr today and good news is, that I am not allergic to the ink my tattoo. He says that it is a viral rash, cause unknown. He said that it is just coincidental that it happened at the same time that I got the tattoo. He gave me a cortisone shot, cortisone pills, and an antihistamine. Hopefully, this will go away soon. Some of the bumps are getting painful. Thanks again!!!
You are only supposed to put it on for a day or two otherwise you end up with too much antibiotic in he skin and you get bumps and blisters.You need to wash it everyday and let it heal.N.
My son had the same rash and some reddness after his tatoo. I took him to a doctor. I thought he had an infection an needed an antibiotic. She thought it was an allergic reaction MAYBE to the die. She couldn't believe that it would have been the A&D but told him to stop using it and just clean it with soap and take BENADRYL. She saw no sign of infection on or around the tatoo. She said to call her if it got worse or any changes occured. The Benadryl work for him and we didn't have to go back.

Probably a contact dermatitis to the dye int the tatoo.... You will prob need both oral and topical steroids. I dont know if your gp would know what to do - you can see my web site at

Is this your first tatoo as unfortunatly you might be allergic to the ink used. My sister's dad has a good friend who is a tattoo artist and says that he has seen this a number of different times and that since the ink does go into your system it traveling through your blood stream is why it would spread that far around. Pretty much like ink or lead posioning he said. If so the only way to get rid of it I would assume is to have the tattoo removed. Painful and expensive so hopefully the Doc will have some more info for you. Let us know how it goes and what you find out.

I found out the hard way that I am allergic to these types of ointment. My wound wouldn't heal. I now use stuff from whole foods. I suggest that you see a doctor immediatly, preferably a specialist to rule out an infection and get the right medication to help you heal.
Have you been washing it everyday with Dial soap?
The only thing I can think of is that maybe you're having an allergic reaction to the ink? I have 4 tattoos and have never had that problem. How long after you got the tattoo did the rash show up? Good luck- hopefully the doctor can figure out what's going on!
Wow, that is scary. When I got mine done, I was told to use Provon Medicated Lotion Soap with Chloroxylenol and the ointment Bacitracin (similar to Neosporin). My tattoo artist told me to do this (he provided small samples and I went out and bought larger quantities) and I did it faithfully and have had no problems. My tattoo is about 2 years old now.
