Another Tattoo Question

In reading through the responses to Christine J.'s question, it's apparent that we have quite a few Mama's out there with tattoos. In response to her post, yes, I have one tattoo that I regret completely. It is a tiger head on my left shoulder blade, beautifully done and I've gotten more compliments on it than I can count. My "problem" with it, is that it matches the one on my ex-husbands's chest. EWWWW! I'm just glad I didn't get his name worked into it too!!
Anyway, here's my question. Do your tattoos ever swell and itch? Even years after having them done? The black ink in mine sometimes welts up and itches like nobody's business, but I never hear anyone else complain about that. Am I the only one?

What can I do next?

I have one on my ankle that sometimes gets really itchy. it's not the black ink but it does seem to be one certain color. many months after getting it I went back to the tatttoo parlor to ask him about it - he J. said to put itch cream on it and it'd be fine. It only happens once or twice a year and it actually gets like a rash around it - red, bumpy and soooo itchy. lasts a few days ...

I have a handful of well placed, professional tattoos, and yes, every now and again I'll notice some swelling and itching. These are old tattoos as well. Someone posted about running it under cold water, and this seems to help M. too.

If the tattoo artist had a 'heavy hand', sometimes, especially when it's hot and you're sweating, or if you bump it hard against something, the lines can raise and even itch. It's a trauma response. Usually running cold water on it or even icing it down takes the bump and itch away instantly :) The darker the color and the heavier the hand, the more prone that area is to bumps and/or itching after too much heat/sun/sweat/or trauma. It has nothing to do with being allergic to the ink. If you had had an allergic reaction, you would have known it before the tattoo artist was even done with the tattoo. If your body was rejecting the ink, it would have fallen out during the healing process.

(What's that?! An educated person covered in tattoos?! Yes, yes it is.)

Mine never have, no.
Could you be allergic to the type of ink they used?

Sounds like you had it done a long time ago, so I doubt infection would be the problem.

No, never...and I have quite a few tattoos. My guess is you're allergic to the ink maybe? It could be triggered by something such as heat or the fabric of your clothing. I don't know but I would probably ask my doc and my tatoo artist if they have heard of such a thing. I also wouldn't get anymore tats until I figured it out.

never had that happen. is it your only one? maybe you are allergic somehow? never heard of that happening and I have quite a few also. And ive had one fixed 3 times and it never did that... maybe have a dermatologist look at it if you want to take the time?

Oooh, I've never heard of anyone having that problem, either, but I'm not an expert. I have 3 tattoos, 2 of which have black outlines, one doesn't. Once they were each healed I've never had any issues other than fading.

I answered Christine's question, and YES, the lines of my tattoo on my back, which is all black, do swell once in a great while. And when it swells, it does itch a bit. And I've had this tattoo for 20 years (yikes, I'm old)...

I have a tatoo on my lower back that is outlined in black and has black tribal on it, sometimes the black parts swell up a little and itch- but not horribly and has never caused M. concern. I would also recommend getting your tatoo re-done/touched up so that it doesn't complety match your ex's and is a tatoo that is unique to you!

I have 4 and I have not had a problem with any of them itching after it initially healed. I do keep all 4 of them lotioned up though, maybe that's why I haven't had the itch.

Nope can't say that they have. Has it faded at all? I am J. wondering if your body is trying to heal it? I have scars that will sometimes itch and have noticed that the ones that do are the ones that are most faded. It seems my body is healing the scar tissue. Could be you have something like that going on.

Tattoos are scars, and scars are prone to itching. Every scar I have itches from time to time.

That means that the tattoo is J. really dry. I have 3 on my back and they do that on occasion. Usually a good rubdown with some unsented lotion like lubriderm is all it needs.
